India’s reported 1–0 win over China in the Asian Games women’s hockey final ended a 44-year wait for gold and secured a direct place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. But goalkeeper Savita Punia said the Olympic berth—not the historic medal—had been the team’s overriding target because qualifying directly would give India more time to prepare.
Why Savita put Olympic qualification first
Speaking after the final, Savita said India entered the campaign focused on earning direct qualification for LA 2028. PTI reported her explanation: “We knew it had been 44 years since India last won gold at the Asian Games, but more than history, our focus was on qualifying directly for the Olympics.”

The distinction was about what came next. A gold medal ended a long wait, while direct qualification settled the Olympic place without another qualifying campaign. Savita said the berth would give India “one-and-a-half years to prepare and perform better in LA,” adding that the team hoped to go there for a medal. The preparation period is her estimate as reported by PTI.

India beat China 1–0 in the final, according to PTI’s 3 October 2026 report. The victory delivered both the Asian Games women’s hockey gold and direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The report also says India secured qualification for the Pro League.

The previous Olympic qualifying experience shaped the priority Savita described: India had failed to qualify at the Paris Olympic qualifiers. She presented earning a direct berth at the Asian Games as the team’s focus after that setback.
Savita’s account of changes within the team
Savita said the team environment had changed over the preceding 10 months following the arrival of new coaches. In her view, greater unity was the biggest change: “We worked a lot on unity, and after the new coaches came in, the team became more united.” This is her assessment, not a separately measured team-performance finding.
