Kenya Power’s published prepaid instructions still tell customers to buy electricity credit and enter the resulting unique 20-digit token on the meter or customer interface unit (CIU). The utility also describes remote smart-meter functions for selected customer groups—but its public information does not establish that every prepaid household can load credit automatically.
Why are 20-digit tokens still part of prepaid electricity?
In Kenya Power’s documented prepaid workflow, a customer purchases electricity and receives a token: a unique 20-digit code that adds the purchased units when entered on the meter. The utility’s customer support information distinguishes prepaid from postpaid accounts, while its prepaid meter FAQ describes buying tokens and keying them in.
That published process explains why customers may still type codes: manual entry remains the documented route for prepaid meters. Kenya Power’s public announcements about other meter technologies do not say that this route has been replaced for all prepaid customers.

It is useful to think of Kenya’s metering as a mix of arrangements and functions, not as a formal customer category. The evidence describes prepaid token meters, postpaid meters read for billing, and smart meters deployed for particular customer groups. Those functions are not interchangeable.

| Arrangement or process | What Kenya Power says | What this does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Prepaid token meter | Customers buy a token and enter its code on the meter or CIU, according to the prepaid FAQ. | That every prepaid meter accepts remote credit loading. |
| Postpaid meter reading with OCR | In November 2025, Kenya Power said OCR was being used to collect readings from postpaid meters; the company targeted 1.8 million meters whose readings were manually taken and submitted monthly. See its meter-reading announcement. | That OCR loads prepaid credit. OCR reads a meter display; it is not evidence of prepaid vending. |
| Smart meters for selected segments | The same 2025 announcement describes two-way communication for remote readings and disconnection or reconnection for large-power, SME, and selected domestic customers. | That every household has a smart meter or is eligible for remote prepaid top-ups. |
| Specified three-phase smart meter | A Kenya Power three-phase smart-meter specification issued 10 February 2023 includes selectable prepaid and postpaid modes and requires automatic load restoration after a prepaid token top-up. | That this specified capability is installed in every home or has eliminated manual token entry nationwide. |
Why OCR does not remove the need to enter a token
OCR and automatic prepaid loading solve different tasks. Kenya Power’s 2025 announcement describes OCR as a way to scan postpaid meter displays and collect readings for billing. A reading tells the utility how much electricity has been used; it does not add purchased credit to a prepaid account.
Two-way smart-meter communication is a separate capability. Kenya Power says it supports remote readings and disconnection or reconnection for large-power, SME, and selected domestic customers. That description does not show how many prepaid households can receive credit remotely, or establish that remote prepaid vending is generally available to residential customers.

What happened in the 2024 token-meter update?
Kenya Power’s “Update Token Meter Yako” campaign was a software and security update for prepaid meters using the STS system—not an announcement that customers would stop entering tokens. The utility said the free exercise targeted 7.4 million meters. Customers were to load previously purchased tokens first, then enter two codes: a reset code and an update code. The deadline was 31 August 2024, so it is not a pending 2026 task.
Kenya Power reported that 5.64 million meters had been updated by 21 August 2024. That is a dated progress figure, not a current completion count. The utility’s campaign announcement and deadline reminder say unupdated meters would not accept generated tokens after the deadline. The FAQ also said the software update did not change the tariff.

- Multi-function power monitor: Our electric usage monitor can monitor the power (W), electricity(kWh), voltage(V), frequency(Hz), current(A), power factor(PF), unit price($/kWh), total cost($) of your appliances. By switching 8 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The “electricity” mode can calculate and display how much power your appliance uses. And the “total cost” mode will show how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Overload protection: When the loading power of the appliance is over the default overload threshold 1800W, the whole display with backlight and the word “OVERLOAD” will keep flashing to warn the users. Please turn off the appliance for safety concern
- Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
- Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
- Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings
What to check when a token is rejected
Kenya Power’s guidance points first to entry and meter matching rather than assuming the token itself is defective.
- Check that all 20 digits were entered correctly.
- Confirm the token belongs to the meter you are trying to top up.
- If both checks are correct and the meter still rejects the token, contact Kenya Power for assistance.
What to check if the CIU will not connect
A CIU keypad or connection problem can have several causes. Kenya Power advises checking the basics below; a battery issue is possible, but it is not the only explanation.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power energy meter can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload Protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
- Check that the CIU has working batteries. The utility says the CIU does not charge its batteries and recommends replacing them if the keypad keeps switching off; it identifies alkaline batteries as a preferred type. Check the particular CIU’s requirements rather than assuming a size.
- Try the socket used for the CIU and confirm that power is available at the meter.
- Check that the relevant breaker is on.
- If the problem continues, contact Kenya Power rather than treating a connection fault as a token-entry issue.
Why might a top-up add fewer units than expected?
Kenya Power says some debt may be deducted from token purchases and advises customers to check tariff details with the utility if the units seem unusually low. Its guidance does not say that typing the token changes the unit allocation.
