The headline refers to a jetpack pilot flying past people who did not look up—not to a complaint about weak sales. In a January 26, 2022 story, Futurism clarified that JetPack Aviation founder David Mayman was recounting an experience near Sydney Harbour. Jetpacks remain rare because today’s real turbine-powered models are short-range aircraft with demanding fuel, heat, training, and operating requirements—not practical substitutes for cars or everyday transport.
What the headline actually means
Futurism’s January 26, 2022 article recounts Mayman’s memory of flying near Sydney Harbour and noticing that joggers and people walking in the botanical area did not look up. As Mayman put it, “The jetpack is loud, so I promise you they heard me. But there I was, flying by on a jetpack, and they did not look up.” Futurism attributed the account to a Guardian interview; the Guardian page was not independently checked for this article.
The anecdote is about public attention during a flight, not a complaint about sales. It also is not evidence of how many people notice jetpacks or how much consumers want them: the sources available provide no dated statistic measuring either.

Flight time is measured in minutes
JetPack Aviation lists manufacturer-claimed endurance of eight minutes for the JB10 and ten minutes for the JB11. The company says endurance depends on pilot weight and density altitude; these are specifications, not independently validated test results. Such short flights leave little time for commuting and little margin for detours or delays.

Fuel and turbine exhaust complicate the ride
The JB10 is a twin-turbojet aircraft, and JetPack Aviation lists fuels including Jet A-1, JP8, kerosene, and diesel. Turbine power comes with hot exhaust and a fuel load that adds weight and burns quickly. Futurism’s 2022 account described the heat, protective clothing, and careful leg positioning involved; those observations should not be treated as a universal specification for every current configuration.
The equipment is heavy and operation is specialized
The manufacturer lists empty weights of 83 pounds for the JB10 and 115 pounds for the JB11, before accounting for fuel and the pilot. AOPA’s January 2018 report also described Mayman’s aircraft as requiring considerable care and discussed work on an emergency parachute system. That report is historical: it does not establish the safety equipment fitted to every current model. Configuration, training, and applicable aviation rules matter.

They are aircraft, not simple personal gadgets
JetPack Aviation distinguishes an Ultralight version, limited to 55 knots and five gallons, from an Experimental version with different qualification requirements. Its product information says the Experimental version requires at least a sport or recreational pilot license plus company training and sign-off; its FAQ instead says at least a Light Sport Aircraft certificate is needed. Because the manufacturer’s wording differs and rules depend on category and jurisdiction, check current official aviation guidance and confirm requirements with the company before planning to fly.
What the current JB10 and JB11 specifications say
The following are JetPack Aviation’s published figures, not results from an independent, like-for-like comparison. Endurance depends on pilot weight and density altitude.

| Model | Propulsion | Empty weight | Published endurance | Other published detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JB10 | Twin turbojets | 83 lb | 8 minutes | Maximum speed above 120 mph; fuel options include Jet A-1, JP8, kerosene, and diesel |
| JB11 | Six turbojets | 115 lb | 10 minutes | The cited product page section does not state a maximum speed or fuel options |
For a real-world comparison, published endurance alone is not enough. Buyers or prospective pilots would also need comparable information about fuel and pilot conditions, configuration, safety equipment, training, operating category, and total cost.

JetPack Aviation’s current FAQ says, “Our JetPacks are not for sale.” Its product page lists prices as available upon request, which is not the same as an offer to purchase. AOPA reported a $250,000 JB10 price tag in January 2018 and said Mayman had sold one; that is a historical figure, not a current quote or evidence of present availability.
