Utah Jazz center Jusuf Nurkić says he has not seen a rookie arrive with Darryn Peterson’s maturity in his 13 NBA seasons—and teammates sometimes have to tell the young guard to leave the gym. Coach Will Hardy has offered similar praise for Peterson’s focus and ability to learn quickly. Those are encouraging early training-camp impressions, not proof of what Peterson’s role or results will be in his first NBA season.
What Nurkić and Hardy have noticed
Nurkić’s comparison—and the gym anecdote
Nurkić, a veteran center, said Peterson stood out for his maturity relative to his age. “I’ve never seen in my 13 years a kid coming into the league and be that mature for his age,” he told The Salt Lake Tribune. He also described a work routine so persistent that teammates nearly have to tell Peterson to stay out of the gym.
That is Nurkić’s personal assessment, not an objective measure of character. But it gives a concrete sense of what teammates say they are seeing: a rookie who is eager to work and takes the transition seriously.
Hardy’s view of Peterson as a learner
Head coach Will Hardy has praised both Peterson’s daily approach and how quickly he is absorbing the new environment. “He’s a very serious young man when it comes to the work he’s doing every day and has shown the ability to be a fast learner,” Hardy said in the Tribune report. Hardy also described Peterson’s transition into the Utah team as seamless.

How Peterson describes the veteran influence
Peterson has framed the NBA’s difference from college in terms of the people around him. He said professional teammates challenge him every day, while veterans have also become mentors. The experience puts him alongside older players who can push him and share what they have learned—rather than mostly peers closer to his own age.
He has also defined a successful rookie season around contribution rather than individual recognition: “Impact and winning are just the main thing on my mind right now. So doing that every night.”

What the praise does—and does not—say about his role
Utah’s praise was not a signal that Peterson had been named a starter. At the September 29 media-day report, the Jazz’s final starting position was still open, with Peterson among four candidates. Hardy said lineups can change. The Tribune’s media-day coverage also quoted president of basketball operations Austin Ainge describing Peterson as bringing “intensity, work ethic, and maturity that is unique,” while acknowledging that a rookie season includes ups and downs.

Why the early impression is only a starting point
The Tribune’s October 1 account said Peterson appeared more comfortable at Jazz media day than during his lone Kansas season. It also reported that full-body cramping issues had caused him to miss multiple games and that multiple sources told the newspaper he was never fully healthy. That is reported context, not a diagnosis or evidence of his current condition.
The same story noted Peterson had been quiet with media and had once called himself an “anti-social loner” when asked about national attention. It also reported that teammates saw him fitting in with the Jazz. Neither a single self-description nor early impressions from teammates should be treated as a complete account of his personality.

Training-camp praise matters because it describes how Peterson is approaching the work and learning from the people around him. Whether that preparation translates into a defined role and consistent on-court impact will become clearer in games.
