Jaguar Land Rover shut down production after a cyber incident led it to take systems offline. The company initially said the pause would last until at least 1 October 2025, but that was a minimum date, not a promise to reopen then: JLR announced on 7 October that a controlled manufacturing restart would begin the next day.
Why did Jaguar Land Rover shut down?
JLR took systems offline after a cyber incident, disrupting the digital operations needed to run its business. The company disclosed few technical details while investigating, so the public record does not establish exactly how the attackers got in or which systems were affected.
The consequences extended beyond factory IT. With production and sales stopped, dealership vehicle registrations and garages’ ability to order parts were also affected, according to a ministerial statement to the House of Commons on 9 September 2025.

How long did the shutdown last?
The dates below distinguish JLR’s initial estimate from its later confirmed restart plan. The announcement that production would continue “until at least” 1 October set a floor for the pause; it did not guarantee a full reopening on that date.

What did the shutdown affect?
This was an industrial and supply-chain disruption, not just an IT outage. The immediate effects reported in Parliament included halted production and sales, workers sent home, interruptions to dealership registration, and difficulty ordering parts at garages. DBT and the SMMT also reported significant effects across the automotive supply chain.
The scale of that supply chain helps explain the broader concern: the UK government’s 28 September announcement cited 34,000 people employed in JLR’s UK operations and around 120,000 workers in its supply chain. These are UK employment figures given by the government in 2025, not a count of people confirmed to have lost work.

What support was available to JLR and suppliers?
Government-backed finance
The support announced on 28 September was a commercial-bank loan backed by an Export Development Guarantee, expected to unlock up to £1.5 billion and repayable over five years. It was intended to bolster JLR’s cash reserves and help suppliers affected by the shutdown; it was not a direct government loan to JLR. Business Secretary Peter Kyle described the attack as “not only an assault on an iconic British brand, but on our world-leading automotive sector and the men and women whose livelihoods depend on it.”

In a later update, JLR said it had set up a supplier help desk, used a manual payment system for outstanding invoices, and re-established automated supplier payments. The company also described a financing scheme that could accelerate supplier payments by as much as 120 days compared with typical 60-day post-invoice terms. That 120-day figure is the maximum acceleration JLR said the scheme could provide, not a payment term applying to every supplier.

Did JLR restart on 1 October?
No. On 23 September, JLR said production would remain paused until at least 1 October while it developed a phased restart plan and continued its investigation. Its later announcement, on 7 October, scheduled the first manufacturing restart for 8 October, so 1 October was not the date production resumed.
The controlled restart was to begin at JLR’s Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre and Battery Assembly Centre. The company said stamping and vehicle operations would follow in the UK and at its Nitra site in Slovakia, with the broader sequence involving engine, battery, stamping, body, paint and logistics operations. JLR also described operations at Solihull and later Halewood as part of the phased return; the announcement did not say every facility would resume at once.

Who was behind the cyberattack?
The sources available in the public statements cited here do not identify the attackers or establish a motive, and they do not confirm a ransomware family. JLR said it was investigating and had disclosed limited technical information. In Parliament, Bryant said he could not give more specifics because doing so could prejudice investigations. Claims naming a group or describing the incident as ransomware should therefore be treated as unconfirmed unless supported by a later statement from JLR, law enforcement, or an authoritative investigation.

What organisations were doing about cyber risk
The NCSC said it was supporting JLR and urged organisations to use its free guidance, services and tools to reduce the chances of a cyberattack and strengthen resilience. That was general advice from the agency, not a disclosure of the attack method or a technical account of JLR’s response.
