If REAPER does not show your MIDI keyboard or does not respond to it, the cause is almost always one of three things: the keyboard is not reaching the computer in a way the system recognizes, REAPER has not been told to listen to it, or the track is not set up to receive from it. Check them in that order. Each step below is taken from REAPER’s official User Guide (version 7.81) and its Troubleshooting Guide, and the menu paths are the ones those documents give.

Step 1: Confirm the physical connection and power

REAPER can only use a keyboard that the operating system already sees. Before changing anything in REAPER, confirm that:

  • the keyboard is switched on and, if it has its own power supply, that supply is connected;
  • the cable is seated at both ends and, for USB, is plugged into a working port on the computer rather than a passive hub that may not pass MIDI data reliably;
  • if the keyboard connects through an audio device, the audio device is powered and its MIDI input is the port the keyboard is cabled to.

If the keyboard does not appear in REAPER and the computer or audio device also does not recognize it, the problem is in the connection, not in REAPER. Fix that first; REAPER preferences cannot help with a device the system does not report.

Step 2: Enable the keyboard in REAPER’s MIDI Inputs list

A connected keyboard is still ignored until REAPER enables it. In the REAPER User Guide (v7.81) the device list is reached this way:

#1 Best Overall

  • Pre-Mapped DAW Integration - Get producing in under 15 minutes with Ableton Live Lite 12, Logic Pro, FL Studio and more; comes with an expanded DAW-mapped transport section for uninterrupted workflow
  1. Open Options > Preferences.
  2. Go to Audio > MIDI Inputs. Labels can shift between REAPER versions and platforms, so if you do not see this exact heading, look for the MIDI device list under the Audio section.
  3. Find your keyboard in the list and enable it for track recording input.
  4. Enable the separate control-message option only when the keyboard is meant to act as a controller surface or send control input. For ordinary playing and recording, leave it off.

Step 3: Set up the track to receive the keyboard

Enabling a device in Preferences does not route its notes to any track. Each track needs its own settings:

  1. Select the track you want to record or play with.
  2. Open the track’s MIDI input selector and choose your keyboard.
  3. Arm the track for recording.
  4. Turn on input monitoring if you want to hear a virtual instrument on the track while you play.
  5. Where the guide’s example applies, choose the relevant source MIDI channel and the mapped output channel.

Step 4: Check the MIDI channel and the instrument

If the track is armed, the keyboard is selected, and still no notes arrive, the most common remaining cause is a channel mismatch:

  • Check which MIDI channel your keyboard transmits on. If the track’s source channel is set to a different channel, notes will be filtered out.
  • If a plug-in instrument is on the track, confirm that it is set to listen to the same MIDI channel.
  • Make sure the track is not muted and that the instrument’s output is routed to a monitored output.

Step 5: Resolve device-open errors

When REAPER reports that it cannot open a MIDI device, the Troubleshooting Guide points to three causes, and you can check them in this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The device is disconnected or unpowered. Reconnect the cable and power the keyboard, then reopen the device list.
  • Another program is using the device. Quit other music applications, DAWs, editors, or MIDI utilities that may have the keyboard open, then try again.
  • REAPER is running twice. Close every REAPER window and confirm that no second instance is still running before you start REAPER again.

Use REAPER’s virtual keyboard to narrow the fault

REAPER’s virtual MIDI keyboard can tell you whether the fault is in your hardware or in REAPER’s configuration. Play it on a correctly configured, armed track. Then compare the results:

Choosing a connection route

The guide describes two basic ways to connect a MIDI keyboard: directly to the computer, or to a MIDI input on a sound card or audio device. Which one applies depends on the ports your keyboard actually has.

Connection route When it applies What to confirm
Direct USB Keyboard has a USB port that the computer reports as a MIDI device The operating system lists the keyboard as a MIDI device
5-pin MIDI through an audio device Keyboard has a 5-pin MIDI output and your audio device has a MIDI input The audio device’s MIDI input is active and the cable goes to that port
USB MIDI interface (conditional) Keyboard has 5-pin MIDI output but no direct USB MIDI connection, and you have no audio device with a MIDI input Your keyboard’s ports and the interface’s MIDI input and output match your cabling

A USB MIDI interface is only needed when the keyboard has no other route to the computer. Check the keyboard’s rear panel and manual before buying one. This is an inference from the documented connection paths, not a recommendation from REAPER’s developers.

Version and platform notes

  • The menu paths above are from REAPER User Guide v7.81. The REAPER download page lists version 7.82 as the current release, so labels may differ slightly in your copy.
  • REAPER’s download page lists support for Windows through Windows 11, Linux on Intel and ARM, and macOS through macOS 26. Device behavior can still depend on the operating system’s own MIDI drivers.

If you have gone through every step and the keyboard still does not appear in the MIDI Inputs list, the problem is usually at the driver or hardware level, and the next useful check is whether the operating system itself sees the keyboard.
