When a laptop microphone stops working, the cause is almost always one of five things: a physical mute or connection problem, the wrong input device selected, a blocked app or system permission, an operating system that cannot see the microphone, or a driver or hardware fault. Work through them in that order. The first three are reversible and take about a minute each, and you should test after every change so you know which step fixed the problem.

Identify your system and the symptom first

The exact menu names differ between Windows versions and macOS releases, so confirm which system you are using before following a path. The steps below use Windows 11, Windows 10, and macOS Mojave or later as reference points. Microsoft’s audio guidance states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The Windows 10 steps can still help you find the same settings, but for model-specific fixes, check your laptop maker’s current support pages.

Your symptom usually points to the section to start with:

  • WHAT YOU GET - Packed in a metal carrying box, and comes with 12 months waranty. For any concern, you can send us messages and we will respond in 24 hours.
  • Physical mute. Look for a mute switch or button on the laptop, on a headset cable, or on an external microphone. Some laptops also have a keyboard key that toggles the microphone. If a mute indicator is lit, toggle it off.
  • Wired headset seating. Push the plug fully into the jack. Microsoft notes that computers may have separate microphone and headphone jacks, or a combined jack for headsets. Check the port labels and your laptop’s documentation, because a headset plugged into the headphone-only jack will not record.
  • Bluetooth microphones. Confirm the device is paired and connected, that it has charge, and that it is selected as the active input. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide lists pairing and connection as the first things to verify.
  • Selected input. If you have more than one microphone or headset connected, the system may be recording from a different device than the one you are speaking into. Confirm the correct device is the selected input.

Step 2: Test the microphone at the system level

A system-level test separates a hardware or system problem from an app problem. If the test works, the microphone and its path to Windows are functioning, and the issue is more likely in the app.

Windows 11 and Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound > Input.
  2. Under the input devices list, select the microphone you want to test.
  3. Open that microphone’s properties and start the microphone test.
  4. Speak normally for a few seconds, then stop the test.
  5. Play back the recorded sample.

If the sample is audible, the microphone and system input path work for that test. If the sample is very quiet, raise the input volume and repeat the test. If the test shows no level at all, return to Step 1 to confirm the correct device is selected, then go to Step 4.

On Windows 11, Microsoft’s general audio troubleshooting article directs users to the automated audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app.

macOS

On a Mac, check the input device in System Settings > Sound > Input, speak, and watch whether the input level meter moves. Apple’s guidance on recording audio covers the built-in microphone, an external USB microphone, and an external audio interface, so use the same check for any of them.

Step 3: Check app and system permissions

If the system test works but a specific app records nothing, check that app’s own input setting, then check privacy permissions. Both are separate from the hardware.

Windows privacy settings

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
  2. Confirm that device-level microphone access is turned on.
  3. Confirm that Let apps access your microphone is on, and check the affected app’s entry if it appears in the list.
  4. Confirm that Let desktop apps access your microphone is on. Traditional desktop programs may not appear in the individual app list, so this switch is the one that controls them.

On Windows 10, Microsoft’s documentation uses Settings > Privacy > Microphone. Microsoft’s guide to turning on app permissions for your microphone in Windows explains the device, app, and desktop-app controls.

Browser meetings

A video call in a browser needs two permissions: the operating system permission above, and a website permission. Microsoft’s privacy guidance notes that a website may prompt separately for microphone access in Edge. If the website never asked, check the site’s permission settings in the browser, because an earlier choice to block the site will keep the microphone silent.

Step 4: When the microphone is missing or still silent

  1. Run the audio troubleshooter (on Windows 11, through the Get Help app as described in Step 2).
  2. Restart the computer and test the microphone again.
  3. If Windows still does not detect the microphone, open Device Manager, find the audio device under the sound, video and game controllers category, and uninstall it. Restart the computer so Windows can attempt to reinstall the device.
  4. If the microphone still does not appear, update the audio driver. Microsoft’s microphone guide recommends this step when reinstalling does not help.
  5. For the driver itself, use the download page for your exact laptop model on the manufacturer’s support site rather than a generic driver tool.

Comparison test with a headset or external microphone

If the built-in microphone fails and you need to know whether the fault is specific to the laptop, test with a headset or external microphone. Microsoft’s voice-typing guidance says: “If using a built-in mic, consider trying again with a headset or external mic.” Use the same four checks on the alternative device:

  • Detection: Does the system list the device in the input settings?
  • System test: Does the Step 2 sample play back your voice?
  • App selection: Can the affected app choose that device as its input?
  • Compatibility: Does the connector match your laptop’s port, and does the device need its own software? Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information, because official sources do not establish that any particular headset works with every laptop.

If the built-in microphone still fails

If an external microphone or headset works while the built-in one does not, the fault most likely sits in the built-in microphone or the path to it. That result does not prove which component has failed. Contact your laptop manufacturer’s support, or use a repair assessment, if the reversible checks above have not restored the built-in microphone. On a Mac, Apple advises contacting the manufacturer of any external equipment about software updates and compatibility if that equipment still fails.
