Start by checking whether Grammarly fails everywhere or only in one place. If it works in another website or a new document, focus on the affected site or text field. If it fails across sites, check the extension, browser, account, and connection. Work through the narrow, reversible checks below before clearing cookies or changing security settings.

Why is my Grammarly not working?

The cause usually depends on where the failure occurs. A problem limited to one website or field can indicate an unsupported editor, a site integration issue, or a permission setting. A problem across multiple sites calls for checks of the extension, browser compatibility, sign-in state, and network connection.

  1. Test another place. Try a different supported website or create a new document. If Grammarly works there, troubleshoot the original site or field rather than resetting everything.
  2. Check the extension. Make sure it is installed and enabled. If its toolbar icon is gray on the affected site, click it and turn on Check text with browser extension. Confirm the extension can read site data for that site, then restart the browser after changing access.
  3. Check the text field. Grammarly says its browser extension does not initialize in text areas shorter than 38 pixels high. Some frameworks, incompatible text boxes, and iframe-based fields may also prevent it from appearing. See Grammarly’s browser-extension troubleshooting guide.
  4. Check for browser conflicts. Temporarily disable other extensions and restart the browser. If Grammarly starts working, enable the extensions one at a time to identify the conflict. For a site-specific failure, clearing cached browser data may also help.
  5. Check browser compatibility. Grammarly lists minimum browser versions for its Editor: Chrome 68+, Safari 12.1+, Firefox 78+, and Microsoft Edge 79+. It recommends current stable browser and operating-system versions. Consult Grammarly’s troubleshooting guidance for current requirements. If your browser meets them, try restarting it, clearing cookies, or testing another browser. Clearing cookies may sign you out.

Why is Grammarly not showing up?

If the extension is installed but its suggestions or icon are missing, first check whether the problem is confined to one site. Grammarly lists Gmail, Google Docs, and WordPress among websites where issues may occur; a failure there does not necessarily mean the extension is broken everywhere. Its guidance on troubleshooting Grammarly on specific websites covers site and field limitations.

  • On the problem site, click the extension icon. If it is gray, enable Check text with browser extension.
  • Review the extension’s permission to access site data for that website. Restart the browser after changing permissions.
  • Try a taller text field or a different editor on the same site. Fields under 38 pixels high are not initialized by the extension, according to Grammarly.
  • Temporarily disable other extensions to check for a conflict. Re-enable them individually afterward.

Why is Grammarly not working on this website?

When Grammarly works elsewhere, the website’s editor is the likelier focus. Some sites use text fields, frameworks, or iframes that are incompatible with the extension, and Grammarly documents known site-specific issues. Check its site-specific troubleshooting steps, then test the same text in a different field or site.

If the extension still does not work on that site, Grammarly suggests trying its desktop app as a workaround: Grammarly for Windows requires Windows 10 or newer, and Grammarly for Mac requires macOS 11 or newer. This may provide another way to work with text, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every website integration problem.

Why isn’t Grammarly working in Google Docs?

First test Grammarly in another supported site or a new document. If it works elsewhere, the issue is likely specific to Google Docs or the field being edited. Check the extension’s site access and whether Check text with browser extension is enabled. Then restart the browser and test with other extensions temporarily disabled. Grammarly includes Google Docs among sites where extension issues may occur; consult its website troubleshooting guidance for steps applicable to the integration.

What to do if Grammarly Editor stops connecting or loading

For Editor interruptions, start with the connection and browser before changing security settings. Grammarly recommends restarting the browser and reconnecting to the network. If the issue continues, test the Editor in an incognito window. If it works there, a browser extension or stored browser state may be involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Restart the browser and reconnect to the network.
  2. Open the Editor in an incognito window to check whether the issue is tied to the regular browser session or an extension.
  3. If it still fails, check whether a VPN, proxy, antivirus, or firewall is interfering. Temporarily adjust security software only for diagnosis, then restore protection. If the test identifies a block, follow Grammarly’s firewall allowlist guidance rather than leaving protections disabled.

Why does Grammarly keep logging me out?

If Grammarly repeatedly loses its sign-in state or features disappear, refresh the session and check cookie permissions. Grammarly’s recommended steps include signing out of the Editor, clearing Grammarly-specific cookies, allowing Grammarly cookies, signing back in through the extension, and restarting the browser. Cookie controls vary by browser; follow the relevant instructions in Grammarly’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance rather than changing unrelated settings.

When to contact Grammarly Support

If these checks do not resolve the issue, give support enough detail to distinguish a site integration problem from a browser or account problem. Note your operating system, browser and version, which Grammarly surface you use (extension, Editor, or desktop app), the affected website or app, the exact error, and which steps changed the behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For technical issues, Grammarly may ask for extension logs. Follow its instructions for collecting and sending them; do not post diagnostic files publicly. Its browser-extension log instructions explain the process.
