Prateek Srivastava of Hindustan Times argues that Ishan Kishan’s reported unbeaten 80 against Sri Lanka mattered more in its match situation than Shubman Gill’s and Rohit Sharma’s centuries in a separate India–West Indies ODI. That is a judgment about context, not a claim that 80 is generally worth more than 100: the innings came in different formats, under different conditions and with different jobs to do.
Why the article rates Kishan’s 80 so highly
According to Hindustan Times, Kishan made 80 not out from 46 balls at No. 5 in an Asian Games semifinal against Sri Lanka. The report says he came in with India at 59/3 after 6.2 overs and that the team finished on 169/7. Those figures are attributed to the newspaper; an official scorecard was not available to independently confirm them.
Srivastava’s case rests on what Kishan faced and what his innings did for the side. He entered after an early collapse, away from his customary No. 3 position, on a surface the report describes as less friendly to batting than Guwahati. With little support at the other end, he stayed through to the end and helped India reach a total the article considered sufficient in that semifinal. The point is not simply the pace of his scoring, but the combination of recovery, role flexibility and carrying the innings forward.
The headline phrase “worth much more” is the writer’s assessment. It is not an official rating or a statistical measure of player quality, and “enjoyable” is likewise a matter of perspective.

How the comparison with Gill and Rohit should be read
The Hindustan Times article contrasts Kishan’s innings with Gill’s reported 223 not out and Rohit’s 101 in a separate second ODI against West Indies, a chase of 406 at Guwahati. These are not like-for-like innings: the Sri Lanka match was a T20 semifinal, while the West Indies comparison was an ODI chase. A century in a large chase can be decisive, but raw totals alone do not tell you how difficult or consequential either innings was.
| Comparison factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Match state on arrival | Kishan reportedly entered at 59/3; a batter arriving with wickets already lost faces a different task from one entering in a more stable chase. |
| Format and conditions | A T20 semifinal and an ODI chase have different scoring demands. The report also contrasts the Sri Lanka surface with Guwahati conditions. |
| Batting role | Kishan batted at No. 5 rather than his customary No. 3, while Gill and Rohit’s innings belonged to a separate ODI chase. |
| Support and contribution | The article says Kishan had little support and continued to the finish. Evaluating either match also requires considering how partners contributed and how the innings shaped the team total. |
| Risk and result | A batter rebuilding after an early collapse confronts a different risk profile from one pursuing a target. The value of each innings ultimately depends on its match context and outcome. |
The distinction matters for accuracy as well as fairness. An ICC account inspected for the comparison covers the first India–West Indies ODI, not the second match described by Hindustan Times. That first-match account reports Gill’s 110 and says Rohit was out in the 12th over; it does not verify the separate 223 and 101 figures. The two sets of innings should not be combined.

What the available score evidence establishes
The semifinal figures in this account come from Hindustan Times. A targeted search did not locate an official Asian Games semifinal scorecard, and the BCCI match-information page inspected was a general portal rather than the specific record. Accordingly, the reported score, Kishan’s entry point and his No. 5 position should be understood as the newspaper’s account, not independently confirmed match data.

The sound takeaway is that match state can make a contribution especially important; it does not prove Kishan’s innings was objectively superior to Gill’s or Rohit’s.
