A cloud icon next to an iPhone app means the app has been offloaded to free storage. The app itself was removed, but its documents and data were kept; tap the icon to download the app again. Apple explains how offloading works.
What the cloud icon means
When iPhone storage is low, iOS can offload an app: it removes the app to reclaim the space the app uses, while keeping its documents and data on the device. The app’s icon remains on the Home Screen with a cloud symbol so you can download it again. Apple’s iPhone storage guide describes this behavior for iOS 26.

How to get the app back
Tap the cloud-marked icon
- Find the app on the Home Screen.
- Tap its cloud icon and wait for the download to finish. The app should then open normally.
Redownload it from the App Store
If you cannot find the icon, sign in to the Apple Account used to get the app. In the App Store, open My Account > Apps & Purchase History > Your Apps, then select the redownload control next to the app if it is available. Apple’s redownload instructions note that an app must remain available to download.

No. Offloading keeps the app’s documents and data. Deleting an app is different: it removes the app and its related data. Apple’s app storage guidance explains the distinction. If preserving data matters, choose offloading rather than deleting.

Offloading versus deleting

Where to check storage and automatic offloading
To review storage use, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. To change the automatic offloading control, Apple’s iOS 26 guide lists Settings > Apps > App Store > Offload Unused Apps. Menu paths can differ between iOS versions, so use the closest matching labels on your iPhone.
If the app is missing but has no cloud icon
An app absent from the Home Screen is not necessarily offloaded. It may be in the App Library, on a hidden Home Screen page, or in the Hidden folder. Check those locations before assuming the app was removed. Apple’s guidance for finding apps covers these locations.
