If the bar at the bottom of your screen has disappeared, it may simply be set to hide automatically. Move your mouse to the very bottom edge of the screen—or touch or swipe up from that edge on a touchscreen. If the taskbar appears, turn off its auto-hide setting. If it does not, check whether you are using a 2-in-1 device, whether the bar is missing on only one monitor, and whether it is the whole taskbar or just some icons.
First, check whether the taskbar is hidden
Move the mouse pointer to the bottom edge of the screen and pause. On a touchscreen, touch the bottom edge. Microsoft documents this as the way to reveal a taskbar that is set to hide automatically. If it returns, it was hidden rather than gone.
To keep it visible in Windows 11, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors and clear Automatically hide the taskbar. If the taskbar is visible, you can also right-click an empty area of it and choose Taskbar settings. In Windows 10, the auto-hide controls are separate for desktop and tablet mode. On some supported convertible or detachable 2-in-1 devices, the taskbar can collapse when the keyboard is detached or folded back. Swipe up from the bottom edge to expand it. This collapsed state is a tablet-optimized layout, not necessarily a taskbar failure; the setting is available only on 2-in-1 devices with tablet functionality.

Tablet behavior depends on the Windows version. Windows 11 automatically adjusts to tablet use on touch-capable devices when it detects a tablet form factor or keyboard detachment; it does not have a manual Tablet mode switch. Windows 10 has a Tablet mode tile in Action Center. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, including free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes. Check whether the taskbar is missing on one monitor or all of them
If the taskbar is visible on one screen but not another, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors and check Show my taskbar on all displays. This setting concerns the bar across monitors.

If the bar itself is present but the clock, network indicator, or an app icon is missing, check the system tray and its overflow area instead. Tray icons have separate visibility controls, so changing the all-displays setting is not the right fix for an individual missing icon. Microsoft’s taskbar and notification-area guidance covers those options.

If the visibility settings do not help, update and restart
Check Windows Update, install available updates, and restart the computer. Microsoft recommends checking for updates and restarting as basic steps for File Explorer startup problems; they are reasonable general Windows recovery checks, not a guaranteed fix or a diagnosis for every missing-taskbar case. The symptom alone does not establish that File Explorer, an update, malware, a display driver, or hardware caused the problem. If the taskbar is still missing, note your Windows version, whether the device is a touch-capable 2-in-1, whether other desktop elements remain visible, and whether the problem affects one monitor or every display before trying more involved repairs.
