If only one channel of your amplifier is working, start with the simple causes: mute or input settings, the balance control, speaker-output selection, loose speaker wiring, and source connections. Check these in order, with the amplifier off before touching speaker wires. The symptom alone does not prove that the amp has failed.
Start with the amplifier’s controls
- Confirm playback and mute: Make sure audio is playing, mute is off, and the volume is set to a reasonable level.
- Check the selected input: Confirm the amplifier is set to the input connected to your source. Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha troubleshooting guidance includes input selection or source connections among the checks for one-sided sound (Denon PMA-600NE troubleshooting; Marantz PM7005 troubleshooting; Denon PMA-150H troubleshooting).
- Center the balance control: A balance setting fully to the left or right can make the other side seem silent. Check the amp’s controls or menu; the exact adjustment varies by model. Manufacturer troubleshooting pages identify balance as a cause of sound from only one speaker (Denon; Marantz; Yamaha A-S3000 manual).
- Check speaker-output selection: If your amplifier has Speaker A/B or another output selector, make sure the output connected to your speakers is enabled. Yamaha lists the speaker selector as a troubleshooting check in its A-S700 manual (Yamaha A-S700 manual).
Use the manual for your specific amplifier to locate these controls and confirm their operation.
Inspect the speaker wires with the amp off
Turn off the amplifier before touching speaker terminals. Check both ends of the silent speaker’s cable for a loose or incomplete connection, a conductor in the wrong terminal, or visible damage. Reconnect it securely according to the amp’s manual. Keep exposed wire strands from touching one another or the chassis.
Loose or incorrect speaker connections are among the causes listed in manufacturer troubleshooting guidance. Yamaha also notes that a defective cable can cause one-sided sound even after connections are corrected (Yamaha A-S3000 manual; Denon PMA-520AEE2 manual).

Use a left-right swap to narrow down the fault
If the connections look sound, you can make a controlled comparison: switch the left and right speaker connections at the amplifier while it is off, then restart at low volume. This is a practical diagnostic test, not proof of a specific failed component.
- If the silence moves to the other side with the speaker and cable, investigate that speaker-and-cable path.
- If the same amplifier output remains silent, check output and balance settings, then the source connections. If those checks do not explain it, consult the manufacturer or an authorized service center.
Do not change connections while the amplifier is powered on, and do not treat the result alone as a definitive diagnosis.

Check the source and its connections
Reseat the cables between the playback source and amplifier, and inspect them for damage. Confirm that the source is connected to the input you selected. If available, try another known-working source or input, changing one thing at a time. A problem limited to one source or input points attention upstream, but does not by itself identify the faulty device or cable. Denon and Marantz troubleshooting guidance also calls out source selection, connections, or cable condition (Marantz PM7005 troubleshooting; Denon PMA-150H troubleshooting).

If the amplifier enters protection, stop and inspect safely
If the amp shuts down or displays a protection warning, turn it off and disconnect power before inspecting speaker wiring. A short between speaker conductors, or between a conductor and the rear panel, can trigger protection on some models. Check for stray wire strands and follow the instructions in your model’s manual (Yamaha A-S3000 manual; Yamaha A-S700 manual).

If the problem remains on the same amplifier output after you have checked balance and output settings, speaker wiring, and source connections, an internal fault is possible—but the symptom does not establish that as the cause. Follow the manufacturer’s escalation guidance. Yamaha recommends turning the unit off, disconnecting power, and contacting an authorized dealer or service center when its listed troubleshooting does not resolve the issue (Yamaha A-S3000 manual).
