A Samsung Chromebook can feel slow because ChromeOS needs an update, apps or tabs are using too many resources, or the internet connection is lagging. The symptom alone does not identify the cause. Start with the update check, then use ChromeOS Diagnostics and Task Manager to look for CPU or memory pressure. If only websites, streaming, or downloads are slow, troubleshoot the connection separately.
First, work out what is slow
Notice whether the launcher, Settings, and apps stored on the Chromebook are sluggish too, or whether the problem is limited to websites, streaming, and downloads. Google’s guidance treats device performance and connection problems as separate issues, and slow internet alone does not show that the Chromebook’s processor or memory is failing. Google’s connection troubleshooting guidance can help when the slowdown is limited to online activity.
Check for a ChromeOS update
Google recommends checking for system updates when a Chromebook is slow. ChromeOS updates automatically when the device is connected, but a restart may be needed to finish installing one. The update schedule shown on the device is specific to that Chromebook, so check it rather than assuming an older Samsung model has stopped receiving updates.

- Select Check for updates, if that option is available.
- Restart the Chromebook if prompted to complete the update.
For a school- or work-managed Chromebook that cannot apply an update, contact the administrator. Google’s update instructions explain how to check the device’s update status and schedule.

Check CPU and memory use
Use the built-in tools to gather evidence before changing settings or assuming the hardware is at fault.
Review Diagnostics
- Open Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics.
- Review the CPU graph and memory test for signs of a resource problem.
- If you run a CPU stress test, expect normal use to become difficult while it is running; it is not the first check to try during ordinary browsing.
The Diagnostics app can check CPU, memory, battery, and connectivity. A failed CPU or memory test is a reason to contact the Chromebook manufacturer. See Google’s Diagnostics instructions.

Inspect Task Manager
Press Search + Esc to open Task Manager. Look for apps or processes using substantial memory, then close only those you do not need. Samsung also recommends closing unused tabs. A process appearing busy is a clue to investigate, not proof that it is the sole cause.

Close tabs, apps, and windows that are not in use, then see whether performance improves. If tabs keep reloading, memory pressure may be involved. Review extensions and turn off ones you do not need; restart the Chromebook and check whether the symptom changes. Do not assume an extension is responsible without testing the device after disabling it. Google covers these steps in its slow Chromebook troubleshooting guidance.

If only the internet is slow
Check the network connection and its speed rather than treating a slow page load as a system failure. Samsung’s connection guidance also points to Drive sync, DNS settings, open tabs, and processes as factors to check. These are connection troubleshooting paths, not a guarantee that every sluggish Chromebook will be fixed by changing network settings.
- Check whether other devices on the same network also have trouble.
- Look for active Drive syncing or processes that may be using resources.
- Review DNS settings only if you are comfortable with the network configuration; restore the previous setting if a change makes the connection worse.
- Close unneeded tabs before retesting a site or download.

When to contact Samsung or reset the Chromebook
If basic checks do not resolve the slowdown, or Diagnostics reports a failed CPU or memory test, contact Samsung support for model-specific help. The information in this guide cannot determine whether an unidentified Chromebook has a hardware fault or has reached the end of its update schedule.

Powerwash restores the Chromebook to its default settings, so treat it as a reset rather than a routine speed tweak. Back up important data before using it. Samsung advises backing up first; see its Powerwash instructions. If the problem continues after the relevant troubleshooting steps, Google also recommends contacting the manufacturer.
