Because drying clothes indoors moves their water into the room air rather than out of your home. If that moisture is not removed by ventilation or a dehumidifier, humidity can stay high and condense on cold windows and walls. Laundry may be part of the problem, but showers, cooking, poor ventilation, or a leak can contribute too.

Why indoor laundry leaves a room humid

Wet fabric releases water vapor as it dries. The clothes may feel dry, but the moisture they contained has entered the air. Without enough air exchange or another way to remove that moisture, it can accumulate indoors. The UK government’s ventilation guide for homes in England identifies washing clothes as one source of indoor moisture.

Aberdeenshire Council’s 2024 landlord leaflet estimates that indoor clothes drying can add 10 to 15 litres of water a week. That is a local weekly estimate, not a measurement for every household or an amount attributable to a particular load.

Why humidity turns into condensation

Humidity is water vapor in the air; condensation is liquid water that forms when moist air meets a colder surface. Windows, exterior walls, and pipes can be cold enough for this to happen. Poor ventilation lets moisture build up, while cold surfaces make condensation more likely. It can collect in corners, cupboards, or behind furniture where air movement is limited, as Oxford City Council’s condensation guidance explains.

A closed door can help keep moisture from spreading from the drying room to the rest of the home, but it does not remove moisture from the drying room. That room still needs ventilation.

What to do, in order

  1. Reduce moisture entering the home. Dry clothes outdoors when practical. If you dry them inside, use one room, close its door, and avoid putting clothes on radiators. Radiators can spread moisture through the home as the clothes dry.
  2. Ventilate the drying room. Open a window or use an extractor fan to move moist air outside. Keep intended background vents clear. The England-specific government guide advises leaving trickle vents open, including in winter. Use and maintain kitchen or bathroom extractor fans where relevant.
  3. Clear visible condensation. Wipe water from windows and other surfaces, then address the moisture source and ventilation. Wiping removes water already present; it does not prevent more from forming.
  4. Measure relative humidity. A hygrometer can show whether humidity is elevated and whether changes are helping. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally 30–50% if possible. Treat this as general guidance, not a guarantee against condensation: outdoor conditions and cold surfaces matter too. The EPA also lists condensation on windows, walls, or pipes as a possible sign of high humidity.
  5. Consider a dehumidifier if ventilation is impractical. A mechanical dehumidifier can remove moisture from indoor air when opening windows is unsuitable or ventilation alone is insufficient. Choose one appropriate for the space and its operating conditions; it does not fix a leak or another underlying moisture source.
  6. Keep rooms evenly warm where feasible. Warmer surfaces are less prone to condensation, but heating does not remove the water vapor. Pair it with source reduction and moisture removal rather than treating it as a substitute.

How to tell whether laundry is the only cause

If humidity rises mainly while clothes are drying and improves after you ventilate the room, laundry is a likely contributor. If it remains high when no laundry is drying, look beyond the airer: showers, cooking, dishwashing, and occupants also add moisture. Check for blocked vents, weak or unused extractor fans, and leaks. A humidity reading or condensation is a useful clue, but neither identifies a specific cause by itself.

Recurring damp or mould, or moisture that persists despite reducing indoor drying and improving ventilation, deserves a broader investigation. Renters should report leaks and continuing moisture problems to the property owner or manager, as the EPA’s moisture guide advises. Hidden or recurring building problems may need assessment by a qualified professional.

Choose the fix that addresses the cause

  • To prevent moisture entering the home: dry clothes outside when feasible. An airer can help position clothes in a contained, ventilated room, but it does not remove moisture.
  • To remove moisture after it enters: ventilate to outdoors with a window or extractor fan, or use a suitably sized dehumidifier if ventilation is not practical.
  • To check whether conditions are improving: use a hygrometer and watch for condensation. Visible water is a symptom, not a full diagnosis.
  • For persistent damp or signs of a leak: investigate the broader moisture problem rather than assuming laundry is responsible.
