A laptop can have a fast processor and plenty of memory yet still feel slow when storage is nearly full, background apps are busy, software is outdated, or heat is limiting performance. The right fix depends on what is actually constrained, so check the pattern and resource use before changing settings or buying hardware.
First, identify when the laptop feels slow
Notice whether the whole system is sluggish, one app is affected, startup takes unusually long, or only internet-dependent tasks lag. Also note whether the problem began after an update or app installation, whether the fan runs constantly, whether storage is nearly full, and whether the laptop is on battery or plugged in. These clues help narrow the cause; none alone proves a diagnosis.
- One app is slow: Check that app’s system requirements and resource use.
- Everything is slow: Look at CPU, memory, and disk activity, plus available storage.
- Startup is slow: Review apps that launch automatically.
- The laptop is hot or fans run often: Check workload and ventilation, and seek support if the issue persists.
Check resource use and free storage
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Open Task Manager and inspect CPU, memory, and disk activity to see whether a particular process is using a large share of a resource. Close apps and browser tabs you are not using, and restart if the laptop remains sluggish. Windows Security also includes a Device performance & health page that can report issues involving storage, battery, apps or software, and the Windows Time service. Select Start > Windows Security > Device performance & health. An organization’s policy may restrict access.

Check available drive space in Settings and remove files or apps you no longer need. Microsoft recommends Storage Sense, temporary-file cleanup, or Disk Cleanup as ways to free space; low storage can affect performance and cause problems installing updates. Microsoft does not specify a universal amount or percentage of free space that every laptop needs. See Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance and its instructions for freeing drive space.

Mac
Check the startup disk’s available space in Storage settings. Apple recommends using Storage recommendations, moving files to another disk or external storage, and deleting files you no longer need from the startup disk. If it is nearly full, making space is a reasonable first step; Apple does not state a universal free-space target in its guidance. Consult Apple’s steps for a slow Mac.
To see whether an app or process is using substantial CPU or memory, open Activity Monitor. Select the CPU or Memory tab to inspect activity. If a process appears to be causing the slowdown, you can select it and use the stop control to quit it; save your work first, and avoid quitting processes you do not recognize. Reduce avoidable background work
Windows
Disable startup apps you do not need, and restrict background activity where Windows offers that setting. Install Windows updates and relevant optional driver updates. A malware scan with Windows Security is also a useful check when the cause is unclear. Review visual effects and power mode if the laptop remains slow after checking storage and processes.
Windows’ Best performance power mode may improve responsiveness, but Microsoft warns it can consume more power, drain the battery faster, and make the device warmer. Use it when plugged in or when responsiveness matters more than battery life, and switch back when that trade-off is not worthwhile. Mac
Use Activity Monitor to identify resource-heavy apps, and quit an app that is unresponsive or using more resources than expected. Check whether the app’s requirements fit your Mac; Apple notes that an app may need more memory than is readily available. If a single app is the problem, address that app rather than changing unrelated system settings.
Check heat and airflow
Heat can accompany heavy workload or a ventilation problem. On a Mac laptop, Apple advises checking CPU activity if the computer is warm without intensive work or its fans run for a long time. Use the laptop on a firm surface rather than a bed, pillow, or bedding; do not cover the keyboard or put anything into ventilation openings. Apple recommends contacting Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for persistent temperature issues and cautions against using third-party temperature apps to diagnose possible hardware problems. These are Apple’s recommendations, not a universal temperature threshold for every laptop. See Apple’s guidance on operating temperatures for Mac laptops.

Know when cleanup is not enough
If the laptop remains slow after checking storage, resource use, updates, and background apps, the cause may require diagnosis rather than another cleanup. Microsoft lists frequent or loud fan operation, battery deterioration, errors, slow startup or shutdown, slower common tasks, low storage, and consistently high CPU, memory, or disk readings among signs to evaluate. Persistent symptoms can reflect workload, aging, or a hardware problem; they do not by themselves identify which component needs attention. Back up important files and consult the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional if basic troubleshooting does not help. Should you buy an external drive?
An external drive can help if the specific problem is a crowded startup disk and you can move files off it. Apple explicitly recommends another disk or external storage as one way to make Mac startup-disk space available. An external SSD will not solve malware, an overloaded startup process, excessive CPU use, or heat. Before choosing one, check that it works with your laptop’s ports and has enough capacity for the files you intend to move; match transfer performance to your workload and compare durability, warranty, and price.
