A sudden battery-life drop after a Windows 11 update is worth investigating, but the timing alone does not prove the update caused it. First check which apps are using power, review Windows power settings, and assess the battery’s capacity. Microsoft says Windows updates do not use more battery than other typical system processes; a specific app, setting, driver, charger, or aging battery may still explain the change.
First, identify when the battery drains
Note whether the charge drops while the laptop is unplugged, asleep, or connected to power. Also record when the change began. If you know the update involved, find its KB number under Settings > Windows Update > Update history. Those details help distinguish ordinary unplugged drain from a sleep, charging, or update-specific problem; timing by itself cannot identify the cause.
Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ says updates do not consume more battery than other typical system processes. That general guidance does not rule out an individual software, driver, device, or configuration issue.

Check which apps are using the battery
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Select Battery usage and review the apps shown for the relevant period.
- For an app that appears to use unusually much power, check whether Windows offers a background-activity control and restrict its background activity if appropriate.
- Restart the laptop once, then compare app usage over a similar period.
The Battery usage view can help identify apps consuming power. A high figure is a lead to investigate, not by itself proof that an app or Windows update is faulty. See Microsoft’s battery-saving tips for the available app and battery controls.

Review Windows power and screen settings
In Settings > System > Power & battery, review the power mode, Energy saver, screen brightness, and screen and sleep timeouts. Try one or two relevant changes at a time, then observe whether usage improves; the effect depends on your workload and device, so no fixed runtime gain can be promised.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guide explains power mode, Energy saver, and screen and sleep controls. Lowering brightness or refresh rate, shortening screen timeouts, and reducing background activity can reduce power use.

Check whether the battery has lost capacity
A laptop can run for less time because its battery holds less charge than it used to, even if software use has not changed. Microsoft notes that lithium-ion battery capacity declines with use. Generate Windows’ battery report to inspect battery and usage information:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
powercfg /batteryreport. - Open the HTML report at the file location shown in the command output.
The report includes information about the installed battery and recent usage. It is diagnostic evidence, not a definitive health score or proof that an update damaged the battery. Compare its capacity and usage details with the laptop’s history or the manufacturer’s diagnostic guidance. Microsoft’s battery-care guidance covers battery reports, aging, and safety.

If the laptop discharges while plugged in
That is a charging issue as well as a battery-runtime question. Microsoft says an incompatible or underpowered charger or cable can cause a PC to discharge while connected to power. Check that you are using the charger and cable designed for your laptop and that they provide the power it requires. This guidance concerns plugged-in discharge, not ordinary battery drain while unplugged. See Microsoft’s charging and plugged-in discharge troubleshooting.
When to consider uninstalling a recent update
Consider rollback only if the problem clearly began after a specific update and persists after checking app usage, power settings, battery capacity, and charging conditions. Microsoft’s recovery guidance says uninstalling a recent update might fix a problem that started afterward. Uninstalling an update is a conditional recovery step, not a routine battery-saving fix; the available information does not identify a particular update as the cause of every sudden drain.

For context, Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 notes for KB5120996, a preview update for Windows 11 version 26H1 (OS Build 28000.2804), mention restoring an Energy saver threshold and improving consistency of power settings across power plans. Those notes apply to that release and do not establish a general battery-drain defect. Microsoft describes 26H1 as available only on new devices with select silicon, not as an in-place update for existing earlier Windows 11 installations, so do not assume it is the update installed on your PC.

If the battery visibly expands, stop using the laptop immediately and handle it cautiously. Do not continue software troubleshooting or press, puncture, or attempt to remove a swollen battery yourself. Follow Microsoft’s battery-safety guidance and seek appropriate repair support.
