A black screen on an Element TV that appears to switch on usually comes from one of four things: the TV is still starting up, the input or connected device is wrong, the TV needs a platform-specific power reset, or the display itself has a fault. Element’s own guidance covers the first three, and they are the checks worth doing before anything else. Work through them in order, and treat a blank screen that survives all of them as a reason to contact support rather than a diagnosis.
Start by reading what the TV is doing
Before changing any settings, note three things. They help you describe the problem accurately and narrow down which branch of this guide applies.
- Indicator light. A red standby light and a set with no light at all are different conditions. Element’s older standard TV manual treats a TV with no power as a separate case from one in standby, so check the wall outlet, the power cord at both ends, and the TV’s power control in each case.
- Sound. Sound with no picture points toward the input, the connected device, or the display path rather than basic power. Element’s help center uses this exact symptom as a standalone troubleshooting topic.
- Response to the remote. If the menu or home screen appears when you use the remote, the TV is running and the fault is likely in the video source. If nothing responds, focus on power first.
Allow for startup before you test anything else
If the TV has just been switched on, give it time. An Element user manual for its standard TV line states: “This is normal; the image is muted during the TV startup process.” The same manual says to contact the service centre if the picture has not appeared after five minutes. That timing comes from one manual and one product family, so use it as a guide for those models rather than a rule for every Element TV.

Check the input and every connected device
Many black-screen reports come down to the TV being on the wrong input. Work through these steps with the TV on and the connected device powered on:

- Press the Input or Source button on the remote and cycle through the inputs until you reach the one your cable box, console, or streaming stick uses.
- Confirm the external device is switched on and not stuck in sleep or standby. A cable box in standby will produce a black picture on any input.
- Check the video cable at both ends. Element’s manual directs owners to check the selected HDMI input and the cable connection when an HDMI device shows no picture.
- Try another channel or another source if you have one. Element’s manual notes that the channel or broadcaster can cause some picture problems.
- On Fire TV models, turn off any connected A/V receiver or soundbar and set it to the correct input while troubleshooting, because the receiver can keep the audio and video path in a confused state.
A replacement HDMI cable is worth considering only when the problem is limited to one HDMI device or one cable. If the screen is black on every input, a new cable will not fix a display-wide fault, and you should move on to the power reset below.
Perform the power reset that matches your model
Element publishes different reset instructions for different platforms, and they are not interchangeable. Find your platform first: standard, smart, Android, or Fire TV. Element’s help center separates support by those categories. The table shows the hold times Element lists for each family.

Use the sequence that matches your model. Applying the 30-second Fire TV hold to a standard set, or a 20-to-25-second hold to a Fire TV set, does not meaningfully test the fault and can confuse the next step of troubleshooting.
Know the Fire TV 4K flicker
Element’s Fire TV support article states: “When you start or stop streaming a title in 4K Ultra HD, your TV screen possibly flickers or turns black for up to five seconds.” This describes a brief transition on Fire TV models during 4K streams, published in 2020. It does not apply to a screen that stays black for longer, and it is not a general timing promise for every Element TV. If the black period lasts longer than a few seconds, or occurs on other content, return to the input and power steps above.

When to contact Element support
If the source checks and the matching power reset do not bring back a picture, contact Element. The support articles list the phone number 888-842-3577, as checked in early October 2026. Support numbers and instructions can change, so confirm the number on Element’s current support pages before you call.
Have these details ready so the call is shorter:
- The exact model number, usually printed on the rear label of the TV.
- The platform: standard, smart, Android, or Fire TV.
- What the indicator light does, and whether there is an indicator light at all.
- Whether sound is present while the screen is black.
- Which input and device you tested, and which power reset you performed.
Element’s published material does not establish current warranty coverage or repair pricing, so ask support about both during the call.

What a black screen does not prove
A black screen by itself does not identify a failed backlight, power board, or main board. Element’s support material does not make a component-level diagnosis from the symptom alone. Buying a replacement part before you have an exact model diagnosis and confirmed compatibility is likely to waste money. If support or a qualified repair service identifies a specific failed component, confirm that the part is compatible with your exact model before ordering it.

Only when all three have been tried and the screen is still black does the hardware question become worth pursuing with support.
