A computer fan that is not spinning may be working as designed, or it may be blocked, disconnected, misconfigured, or broken. First identify which fan has stopped and whether that exact device normally allows it to stop when cool. If the computer is overheating, showing a fan error, crashing, or shutting down, stop using it while you diagnose the problem. Power down and disconnect it before inspecting accessible fans or vents.
First, identify the fan and check whether it should be spinning
“Computer fan” can mean a laptop cooling fan, desktop case fan, CPU cooler fan, graphics-card fan, or the fan inside a power supply. Each has a different design and repair path. Some laptops and graphics cards stop their fans below a model-specific temperature threshold, so a stationary fan at idle does not by itself prove a fault. Check the documentation for the exact computer or component to confirm its expected behavior. ASUS notes that some devices do not start their fans until a temperature threshold is reached; that behavior depends on the model: ASUS fan troubleshooting guidance.
For a desktop, identify which fan is stopped without reaching into a powered computer. A case fan, CPU cooler fan, and graphics-card fan may have separate connections and controls. If the stopped fan is in a laptop, graphics card, or power supply, consult the manufacturer’s guidance rather than assuming the steps for a standard desktop case fan apply.
Decide whether it is safe to keep using the computer
If you see an overheating warning, experience abrupt shutdowns, repeated crashes or reboots, or notice performance throttling, stop using the computer until cooling is checked. A stopped processor fan can lead to rapid overheating. HP advises against continuing to use a computer when its fan is not working correctly: HP fan troubleshooting guidance.

Shut down before opening or cleaning
Shut the computer down and unplug a desktop before opening its case or moving cables. For other devices, follow the manufacturer’s shutdown and service instructions. Never touch a fan, move a wire, or try to clear debris while the system is powered.

Check the fan and airflow path
Look only at accessible areas. Check for dust, hair, debris, a cable touching a blade, or blocked vents. On a desktop, confirm that the fan lead is fully connected to the intended motherboard header or documented controller. A loose cable or obstruction can mimic a failed fan. Intel calls out dust buildup and fan-cord connections; AMD advises confirming that a cooler fan is connected to the correct header: AMD processor cooling troubleshooting.
Remove dust carefully if it is causing the problem
Clean only after shutting down and disconnecting the device, and follow its maker’s instructions. Where ASUS’s cleaning guidance applies, it recommends using a commercially available can of compressed air from a distance and not inverting the can. ASUS warns that powerful air compressors can damage fan blades: ASUS fan cleaning guidance.

Configured with up to 55cm of cable for PWM series control of fans, ideal for cases and CPU coolers.
- 【Quality Bearings】The carefully developed quality S-FDB bearings solve the problem of pc cooling fan blade shaking in lifting mode, keeping fan noise to a minimum while providing maximum cooling performance when needed and extending the life of the fan.
- [Excellent LED light] The high-brightness LED atomizing argb fan blade can effectively reflect the light, making the ARGB lighting effect softer, and it matches the cooler and case more perfectly. Up to 17 modes of light effects with ARGB support, color can be managed and synchronized through the port on motherboard.
- 【Silent Fan Size】 Model: TL-C12C-S X5, Size: 120*120*25mm, Speed: 1550RPM±10%, Noise ≤ 25.6dBA Connector: 4pin pwm, Current: 0.20A, Air Pressure: 1.53mm H2O, Air Flow: 66.17CFM, Higher air flow for improved cooling performance.
- 【Perfect Match】The PC fan can be used not only as a case fan, but is also suitable for use with a cpu cooler to create a cooling effect together, which can take away the dry heat from the case and the high temperature generated by the CPU in operation, allowing for maximum cooling; Ideal for cases, radiators and CPU coolers.
Cleaning may clear an obstruction or improve airflow, but it cannot repair a failed motor or bearing. Do not force a blade to turn or keep using a computer that is overheating in the hope that cleaning alone will solve the problem.
For a desktop, check the fan header and control settings
A desktop fan may be connected to the wrong header, or a BIOS setting or fan-control profile may be preventing it from running as expected. Check the motherboard manual for the correct CPU_FAN, chassis/system-fan, or other documented header and confirm the fan-control settings in BIOS/UEFI or the system’s fan-control software. ASUS and AMD both recommend checking the connection and fan-control configuration: ASUS motherboard fan troubleshooting and AMD processor cooling troubleshooting.

- Streamlined Fan Connections: Daisy-chain multiple fans together and control them all through just one 4-pin PWM connector and one +5V ARGB connector.
- Lighting Made Easy: Eight LEDs per fan shine bright with customisable lighting through your motherboard’s built-in ARGB control (requires compatible motherboard).
- Precise PWM Speeds: Set your fan speeds up to 2,100 RPM while providing up to 72.8 CFM airflow to your system.
- CORSAIR AirGuide Technology: Anti-vortex vanes direct airflow at your hottest components for concentrated cooling, pushing air in the direction you need when mounted to a radiator or heatsink.
- High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.
Do not move a CPU cooler fan to an arbitrary header: the motherboard may expect the CPU cooler to be connected to a specific one. If the manual permits testing another suitable header, or you can test with a known-working compatible fan, those checks can help distinguish a fan fault from a header problem. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what resolves the issue.

Choose replacement or service based on the component
Desktop case and cooler fans
If inspection and suitable connection or control checks point to a failed desktop fan, replacement may be appropriate. Before buying, verify the exact case or cooler model, physical dimensions and mounting, connector, speed-control method, and the header or controller it will use. A “120mm PWM PC case fan” is suitable only if your system calls for that size and control type; those specifications are not universal.
Also consider the cooling system as a whole. AMD identifies cooler adequacy, fan-profile configuration, cabling, and system airflow as relevant to cooling problems. Replacing a fan will not correct an obstructed vent, unsuitable cooler, or control-setting issue.
Laptops and graphics cards
Use the manufacturer’s service instructions for the exact laptop or graphics card. Fan behavior, diagnostics, and replacement procedures vary by model, and opening an assembly may require model-specific tools or steps. If the maker directs you to service or the fan is not intended to be user-replaceable, use qualified repair service.
Power supplies
Do not open a power supply to replace its internal fan. HP warns that doing so creates fire and electric-shock risks. If you suspect the power-supply fan has failed, stop using the computer and have the unit assessed or replaced through a qualified service path.
When to stop troubleshooting
- The computer is overheating, shutting down, crashing, throttling, or displaying a fan fault.
- You cannot safely access the fan, or the component is a laptop, graphics-card, or power-supply assembly with model-specific service requirements.
- A desktop fan remains stopped after you have checked for obstruction, confirmed the correct connection, and verified appropriate control settings.
- You are unsure which header, replacement part, or service procedure applies to the exact system.
In these cases, rely on the device or component maker’s manual and service instructions rather than continuing to operate a potentially overheating system.
