Your C: drive may be full because of temporary files, installed apps, personal files, locally stored cloud content, or Windows system storage—but the mix differs from one PC to another. Check Windows’ storage breakdown first, then use the cleanup option that matches what is taking up space.
Find out what is using space on your C: drive
-
Open File Explorer, select This PC, and check the available space shown for the drive.
-
Open Settings > System > Storage. Review the categories Windows lists, such as Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved. The category names and navigation can vary slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11 versions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
This breakdown is more useful than assuming a particular kind of file is responsible. Microsoft documents these categories and Windows’ built-in cleanup options in its Storage settings guidance and free-up-space guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Choose a cleanup option based on the category
| What Storage shows | What you can do | Check before proceeding |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary files or cleanup suggestions | Review Cleanup recommendations, Storage Sense, or Disk Cleanup. | Inspect the categories Windows has selected and what their removal means before confirming. |
| Large personal files | Delete files you no longer want, or move wanted files to external storage. | Keep a separate copy of anything you want to retain. Empty the Recycle Bin to remove deleted files that remain there. |
| Unused apps | Review Cleanup recommendations and uninstall apps you no longer need. | Make sure you do not still need the app. |
| Locally stored cloud files | Use OneDrive Files On-Demand to make eligible files online-only, or adjust Storage Sense settings. | Online-only files need a network connection to retrieve. Files marked “Always keep on this device” are exempt from Storage Sense management. |
| Previous Windows installation | Remove it through Windows’ cleanup interface if you no longer need to roll back. | Removal deletes the files that let you return to the previous Windows version. |
These are options, not a guaranteed ranking: Microsoft’s guidance does not provide a universal estimate of how much space each one will free.
Review temporary and system files before deleting them
Windows offers Cleanup recommendations and Disk Cleanup to review file categories that may be removable. Read the selections before confirming; not every category should be treated as universally disposable. Storage Sense can automatically remove selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents according to its settings. Microsoft says it works on the system drive, usually C:, rather than cleaning every drive.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
For Windows update space issues, Microsoft recommends using Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup and checking the available storage. Windows checks whether there is sufficient storage before installing updates, but Microsoft does not specify a universal free-space threshold in its cited update guidance. Cleanup therefore cannot guarantee that a particular update will install. See Microsoft’s guidance on freeing space for Windows updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMove files you want to keep
Videos, photos, music, documents, and files in Downloads can take up local space. Open a large folder and sort by file size to identify items worth reviewing. Delete only files you do not want; move files you want to keep but do not need on the PC to an external storage device. Check the device’s capacity and connection type for compatibility with your computer. After deleting files, empty the Recycle Bin if you want to reclaim the space they still occupy there.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Manage OneDrive files stored on the PC
OneDrive Files On-Demand can leave eligible files online-only instead of keeping full local copies. Storage Sense can manage eligible cloud content when configured, but files marked “Always keep on this device” are exempt. You need a working network connection to open an online-only file. Review OneDrive and Storage Sense settings before making files online-only so you understand their local availability.
Understand system and reserved storage
System & reserved storage is not necessarily waste to remove. Windows reserves some space for temporary files, caches, and other system needs; Microsoft says Windows can clear reserved storage for other processes when the device is low on space. Use Storage settings to understand what Windows reports rather than trying to delete system files manually.

Remove a previous Windows installation only if you do not need rollback
After an upgrade, Windows may offer a previous installation as a cleanup option. Removing it deletes the files required to return to the earlier Windows version. If you might need that rollback option, do not remove the installation; otherwise, use Windows’ cleanup interface and review the selection before confirming.
If the Temp folder quickly fills again
A rapidly refilling Temp folder can have a specific cause rather than ordinary accumulation. Microsoft documents a case involving Microsoft Store .appx files. For that symptom, its troubleshooting includes resetting the Store, clearing its cache with wsreset.exe, running the Store Apps and Windows Update troubleshooters, and restarting the PC. This sequence addresses the documented Store-related case; it is not a universal remedy for every full drive. See the Microsoft free-up-space article.
