If your business is missing from ChatGPT Search, first check that the page is public, that OAI-SearchBot can crawl it, and that your host or CDN does not block the crawler. Those checks determine whether a page is eligible to be considered; they cannot guarantee that it will appear for a particular query. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT Search, while placement depends on multiple ranking factors.

1. Confirm the page is public and reachable

OpenAI’s publisher guidance applies to public websites. A page that requires a login is not public for this purpose. Check the specific page you want found, not only your homepage: confirm it loads without signing in and that its content is available to visitors.

OpenAI’s guidance does not provide a universal test for every access configuration, so a page loading for you does not by itself establish that a crawler can reach it.

2. Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot

OpenAI advises publishers to avoid blocking OAI-SearchBot if they want their site content considered for ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets. Inspect your site’s robots.txt rules and look specifically for directives applying to this crawler. OpenAI’s Publishers and Developers FAQ explains the crawler’s role and publisher controls.

3. Check rules for the exact page path

A broad allowance does not help if a more specific robots.txt directive blocks the page you want indexed or surfaced. Compare the target URL’s path with all applicable rules. For example, a rule affecting a particular directory may prevent access to a service page even when the homepage is allowed.

4. Check your firewall, CDN, and bot controls

Correct robots.txt rules are only one part of access. OpenAI says a site’s host or CDN must allow traffic from its published searchbot IP addresses. Review firewall rules, bot-mitigation settings, and CDN controls for blocks or challenges affecting those addresses. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ provides the relevant guidance.

If you change a rule, confirm that the change applies to the environment serving the public site and to the specific page path. A crawler can remain blocked at the infrastructure level even after robots.txt is corrected.

5. Make sure you are checking the right crawler

OAI-SearchBot is the crawler OpenAI identifies for ChatGPT Search crawling. GPTBot is discussed separately in relation to publisher preferences about potential training. Blocking GPTBot is not described as a way to prevent or enable ChatGPT Search access. Treat the two crawler settings as separate decisions, and use OpenAI’s published explanations rather than assuming they are interchangeable.

6. Review whether noindex is intentional

OpenAI notes that a URL blocked from crawling may still appear in ChatGPT Atlas as a link and title if the URL is discovered elsewhere and relevant signals exist. If you do not want that behavior, OpenAI points publishers to a noindex meta tag. The crawler must be allowed to read the page to see that directive, so blocking it from crawling can prevent the tag from being observed.

This is a distinct control from robots.txt: decide whether the page should be crawlable and whether it should be excluded from results, then configure each directive accordingly.

7. Make interactive pages understandable to agents

For ChatGPT Agent in Atlas, OpenAI recommends using ARIA roles, labels, and states so the agent can understand interactive elements. This is an accessibility and agent-compatibility recommendation. OpenAI does not present it as a ranking guarantee or a specific factor for ChatGPT Search placement. See the publisher FAQ for its Atlas guidance.

8. Allow for ranking variability

Being crawlable makes a public page eligible for consideration; it does not secure a position. OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks results using multiple factors intended to surface relevant, reliable information, and that placement is not guaranteed. Its public guidance does not provide a formula you can use to predict or ensure a result for a particular query. OpenAI’s help page on searching the web with ChatGPT explains this limitation.

9. Test the query with local context

If your business serves a particular area, try the same search with the city or postal code included. ChatGPT may use approximate or shared device location for local results, and location settings can affect what you see. A more specific prompt is a useful diagnostic, not a guarantee that your business will be listed. The available guidance does not establish a particular location setting or query wording that ensures inclusion.

10. Track referrals after changes

OpenAI says referral URLs from ChatGPT automatically include utm_source=chatgpt.com. In your web analytics, look for that parameter to identify traffic referred from ChatGPT after you have made access or content changes. It measures visits attributed to ChatGPT; it does not tell you whether a crawler reached a page or where that page ranked.

How to narrow down the cause

  • The page is private or unavailable: make sure the intended content can be reached publicly.
  • Robots.txt blocks the crawler or target path: review the directives that apply to OAI-SearchBot and the exact URL.
  • Robots.txt allows access, but the page still cannot be reached: investigate host, CDN, firewall, and bot-mitigation rules, including whether the published searchbot IP addresses are allowed.
  • The page is crawlable but not appearing for a query: eligibility is not placement; ranking varies and is not guaranteed.
  • The search is local: include the served city or postal code and consider the location context ChatGPT may be using.
  • You want to know whether ChatGPT sends visitors: check analytics for utm_source=chatgpt.com.

These checks can identify common access and measurement issues, but a site-specific diagnosis requires the domain, target URL, robots.txt rules, host or CDN configuration, and an example query. OpenAI’s published guidance does not establish the cause for an individual business or provide a ranking formula.
