If a phone, tablet, or laptop loses charge while connected to power, it is using energy faster than it is receiving it—or charging is being slowed or interrupted. The symptom alone does not prove the battery is failing. Check the charger, cable, power demand, temperature, port, and charging settings before arranging service.
What a falling battery percentage while charging means
The displayed percentage can fall when the device’s power use exceeds the power reaching its battery. On Windows PCs, an incompatible or underpowered charger, an unsuitable cable, or a poor connection can cause a device to discharge while plugged in. Phones can also charge slowly or stop charging because of heat, accessory problems, moisture or debris in the port, or charging controls.
Start by noting the device model, charger and cable, whether you are using the device, and whether the percentage keeps falling or pauses at a particular level. Charging requirements and setting names vary by model and software version.

Check the power source, charger, and cable
- Reseat the connections. Check the outlet, adapter, cable, and device connection. Unplug and reconnect both ends securely. If you use a power strip or dock, test directly from a reliable wall outlet and adapter.
- Inspect accessories and connectors. Stop using a cable or adapter that is damaged, unusually hot, or has a loose connection. Check that the connector fits properly; do not force it.
- Compare with a known-good, compatible charger and cable. Use accessories specified for your device model. A USB-C plug by itself does not guarantee the charger and cable can supply the power a laptop needs.
- For a laptop, verify the full power chain. Check the manufacturer’s requirements for the computer, adapter, cable, and charging port. Microsoft notes that USB-C can support up to 5V, 3A, or 15W, while USB Power Delivery can support higher power when the device and accessories support it. That 15W example is not a recommendation for every PC; a particular laptop may require more.
Microsoft’s guidance for PCs that are “discharging while it’s plugged in” explains the importance of charger and cable compatibility: Microsoft: PC is charging slowly or discharging while it’s plugged in.

Reduce power use during a short charging test
Close demanding apps and avoid intensive work while checking whether the battery level changes. On a laptop, let it sleep or shut it down during the test; Microsoft recommends charging a PC while asleep or turned off to speed charging. If the percentage rises under lighter use, power demand may be contributing, but that result does not rule out an accessory or device fault. Do not assume that reducing use will resolve every phone charging problem.
Check for heat, moisture, and port problems
Let a hot device cool naturally
Stop demanding tasks while charging and move the device to a normal, well-ventilated environment. Samsung says high device temperature can temporarily stop charging or reduce charging speed. Apple also describes temperature-related charging behavior for iPhone. Do not cool a device in a refrigerator or freezer.

Apple’s UK guidance, published April 8, 2025, gives 16° to 22°C (62° to 72°F) as the ideal ambient temperature range for iPhone operation and advises avoiding charging in ambient temperatures above 35°C (95°F), which may permanently reduce battery lifespan. These figures apply to Apple’s iPhone guidance, not every device: Apple: Charge and maintain your iPhone battery.

If the device shows a moisture warning, do not try to charge through the wet port. Allow moisture to clear and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Debris can also prevent a reliable connection, but do not use metal picks, liquids, or force to clean the port. Seek service if the port is damaged, a moisture alert persists, or charging remains unreliable.

Samsung’s support guidance covers accessory checks, heat, moisture, port condition, charging settings, and service options: Samsung: Galaxy device may appear to be charging slowly or not charging at all. Check charging behavior and settings on phones
Distinguish a charging limit from a fault
If the level stops at a repeatable maximum instead of continuing to fall, check whether a battery-protection or charging-limit feature is enabled. Samsung notes that Battery protection can limit the maximum charge; the feature’s name and availability depend on the device and software. A configured limit is different from unexplained ongoing discharge.

Compare wired and wireless charging, if available
If the device supports both, test each method with compatible equipment. A difference can help narrow the problem to a particular accessory, alignment, or connection, but it does not identify the cause on its own. Check the device maker’s compatibility requirements before replacing a charger or cable.

When to contact the manufacturer or a repair service
Seek the manufacturer’s diagnostics or an authorized repair provider if the symptom continues with a known-compatible charger and cable, the charging port is damaged, an accessory or port overheats, or battery runtime has markedly worsened. Samsung notes that persistent charging problems or significantly reduced battery usage time may indicate a hardware issue. Avoid buying a replacement battery based on this symptom alone; diagnosis can distinguish a battery fault from a charging-path or power problem.
