An ASUS laptop can feel slow because of low free storage, an older hard drive, limited memory, too many background apps, malware, outdated software, restrictive power settings, or hardware that cannot keep up with current tasks. The fastest way to find the cause is to check Task Manager and storage first, then work through software fixes before considering an upgrade.

Find what is slowing the laptop down

Check resource use while the laptop is slow, rather than guessing or buying parts immediately. ASUS notes that processor capability, insufficient memory, and using an HDD instead of an SSD can contribute to slow performance. Microsoft also identifies low storage, startup apps, outdated software, and older hardware as common factors.

  1. Check Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. In Processes, look for apps using a large share of CPU, memory, or disk. In Performance, check whether one of those resources stays heavily occupied during ordinary use. In Startup apps, note programs marked as high impact.
  2. Check free storage. Open Settings > System > Storage and see how much space remains on the system drive. An almost-full drive can affect responsiveness.
  3. Test without peripherals. Disconnect external drives, printers, dongles, memory cards, and other accessories, then see whether performance changes. ASUS includes peripheral removal in its troubleshooting sequence.
  4. Scan for malware. Run a scan with Windows Security. ASUS warns that some free software can be bundled with malware; Microsoft also recommends scanning when a device is slow.
  5. Run ASUS diagnostics if available. Open MyASUS and look for System Diagnosis. Availability and menu names vary by model and region; ASUS lists slow system, driver errors, non-responsiveness, and slow boot among the situations its diagnostic feature can address.

If CPU, memory, or disk usage stays high, note which process is responsible and whether the pattern occurs after startup, during a particular task, or all the time. That distinction helps separate a software load from a storage or hardware limitation.

Why an ASUS laptop may suddenly become slow

Startup apps or background processes

Apps that launch at sign-in or keep running in the background can consume memory, CPU time, or disk activity. A change that began after installing an app or update may point to a new process or software conflict. Use Task Manager’s Startup apps and Processes views to identify likely culprits rather than disabling services indiscriminately.

Low storage or a slow drive

A nearly full system drive leaves less room for Windows and apps to work with. An HDD can also feel much slower than an SSD for booting and opening programs. Persistent high disk use, especially alongside slow startup or file access, is a reason to investigate the drive; it does not by itself prove that the drive is failing.

Memory or processor limits

If memory remains heavily used with your usual apps open, the laptop may be short of RAM for that workload. A processor that is older or less capable may also limit performance, particularly with demanding software. More memory will not solve a processor bottleneck, and a faster drive will not fix every cause of lag.

Malware, outdated software, or power settings

Malware and software conflicts can burden the system. Outdated Windows, drivers, or BIOS can also contribute to problems. A power mode that favors battery life may reduce responsiveness under demanding workloads.

Try these software fixes first

Install updates suited to your model

Install available Windows updates, then check ASUS support resources for drivers and BIOS updates for your exact laptop model. Do not install a BIOS intended for a different model. Update menus and available packages vary by model and region.

Reduce startup load and remove unused apps

In Task Manager, open Startup apps and disable nonessential programs that do not need to start with Windows. Uninstall apps you no longer use through Windows Settings. Keep security software and utilities you rely on, and avoid turning off unfamiliar items without identifying them first.

Free up storage

In Settings > System > Storage, review temporary files and other categories before removing anything. Uninstall unused apps and move or delete files you no longer need. You can enable Storage Sense to help manage eligible files automatically; review its settings so it does not remove files you intend to keep.

Test Best performance power mode

For a plugged-in workload, open Settings > System > Power & battery and choose Best performance if that option is available. Compare responsiveness with your usual setting. Microsoft cautions that this mode uses more power, drains the battery faster, and may make the laptop warmer, so it is not necessarily the best everyday battery setting.

Check drive optimization and visual effects

Search Windows for Defragment and Optimize Drives and use the available optimization action appropriate to the drive and Windows configuration. Do not treat defragmentation as a repair for a failing drive or a replacement for an SSD upgrade. If performance is still poor, reducing unnecessary visual effects may help the interface feel more responsive.

Use a clean boot to identify software conflicts

A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of startup programs and services. If the slowdown disappears, a startup app or service is a likely cause. Microsoft recommends systematically turning items on or off and restarting to isolate the conflict.

  1. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure for your Windows version; the exact controls can vary.
  2. After starting in the clean-boot environment, use the laptop normally enough to check whether the problem remains.
  3. If performance improves, re-enable startup items and services in manageable groups, restarting and checking after each change until the slowdown returns.
  4. Use the item or group that brings the problem back to narrow down the conflict, then update, remove, or adjust the responsible software as appropriate.

Should you upgrade the SSD or RAM?

Upgrade only after the checks point to a storage or memory limit and you have confirmed the exact model supports the change. ASUS laptop configurations differ: some allow component upgrades, while others have soldered memory or model-specific storage options.

Option When it may help What to verify first
SSD The laptop still has an HDD, disk activity is a bottleneck, or drive diagnostics raise concern. Whether the model supports M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, or 2.5-inch SATA; physical thickness; capacity limits; and the service instructions for the exact model.
RAM Memory use is consistently saturated during the work you actually do. Whether memory is upgradeable or soldered, plus the supported maximum, generation, speed, module type, and channel configuration.

An upgrade may not improve performance when the real constraint is the CPU, thermal throttling, malware, or a software conflict. Back up important files before replacing a drive or attempting another invasive repair.

Why does my ASUS laptop take so long to boot?

Slow booting can result from too many startup programs, a slow or problematic disk, or other background activity. Check Task Manager’s startup impact, available system-drive space, and MyASUS System Diagnosis if your model offers it. If the laptop has an HDD, that may be a meaningful storage limitation; if diagnostics suggest a drive problem, prioritize backing up important files and getting the hardware checked rather than relying on defragmentation.

When to contact ASUS or a repair professional

Seek ASUS support or qualified repair if the laptop remains slow after software checks, MyASUS reports a hardware issue, the drive behaves abnormally, or symptoms suggest a hardware failure. Use the service documentation for the exact model before opening the laptop or buying replacement parts. Back up important data before a reset, drive replacement, or other repair that could affect files.

Windows 10 support ended on 2025-10-14, according to Microsoft. If your ASUS laptop still runs Windows 10, account for that support status when planning updates or migration.
