It is called Beats by Dr. Dre because the brand name ties Beats audio products to Dr. Dre, one of the company’s co-founders. Beats’s official history identifies Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine as its founders, but the official Beats and Apple pages consulted do not explain why the founders chose that exact wording.
What the name tells us—and what it does not
“Beats by Dr. Dre” is the brand identity used by the audio company. The “by Dr. Dre” wording points to the artist and co-founder’s association with the brand; it should not be treated as a documented account of how the name was selected. The available official statements establish who founded Beats and how the company describes itself, but do not provide a naming anecdote or a more specific rationale.
Who founded Beats?
Beats identifies Dr. Dre and music executive Jimmy Iovine as its co-founders. The two names are important to understanding the brand: Beats is not named for Dr. Dre alone, even though his name appears in the brand. Beats’s current company description presents the business as an audio brand focused on premium headphones, earphones, and speakers. Beats company history

Why do sources give different founding years?
Beats says it was founded in 2006, while Apple’s 2014 announcement says Beats Electronics was “formally established” in 2008. Those are the different milestones and phrasings used by the two companies; neither page explains the distinction, so the dates should not be collapsed into one definitive year. How the brand became part of Apple
Apple announced an agreement to acquire Beats on May 28, 2014. Beats’s company history says Apple acquired it in July 2014. Apple announced a total value of $3 billion in 2014: approximately $2.6 billion in purchase price and approximately $400 million to vest over time. Those figures describe the announced 2014 deal, not a current valuation. Apple’s 2014 announcement Beats company history
Apple’s announcement described a broader business than the current Beats company description: it included Beats Audio software technology and Beats Music, then a subscription streaming service. Apple also said the Beats Music team had “over 300 years of experience across all genres”—a description of that team in 2014, not a current service metric. Today, Beats’s official description centers on consumer audio products.
