Goa is expensive around Christmas and New Year because December and January are peak accommodation months, when many travellers want rooms at the same time. Goa’s Department of Tourism says accommodation is at a premium during the festive period and advises booking well ahead. That explains the seasonal pressure, but it does not establish a standard price for every hotel—or prove that Goa will always cost more than Bali or Vietnam.
Why Goa accommodation costs more during the festive season
December and January are peak booking months
Goa’s Department of Tourism identifies December and January as peak months for accommodation. It warns that visitors may have trouble finding rooms unless they book well in advance and says accommodation is at a premium around Christmas and New Year. The department’s accommodation guidance supports a straightforward explanation: festive-season demand is concentrated into a popular travel window.
This is a seasonal explanation, not a measured breakdown of hotel pricing. The available official guidance does not quantify how much of a particular room rate comes from demand, supply, flight costs, taxes, events, or other factors. It also does not establish that every Goa property raises prices by the same amount.

Goa’s Department of Tourism reported 54.55 lakh tourist arrivals from January through June 2025, including 51.84 lakh domestic visitors. Those figures show substantial visitor volume, but they do not demonstrate that a shortage of rooms caused any particular festive-season price. The department’s January–June 2025 arrival figures are context, not a hotel-rate survey.

What the Goa-versus-Bali and Vietnam comparison actually says
The viral figures are an attributed claim, not verified prices
Hindustan Times reported a traveller’s social-media comparison claiming that five festive-season nights at a five-star property in Goa or another popular Indian destination could cost ₹1.5 lakh–₹2.5 lakh for the room, while a comparable luxury resort in Bali, Vietnam, or Krabi could cost ₹40,000–₹60,000 for five nights. The report said it had not independently verified those claims. They should be read as one traveller’s comparison, not as confirmed market prices or a general rule that an overseas holiday costs less than Goa.
Hindustan Times’ report on the comparison does not provide a verified, like-for-like set of current bookings. In particular, the claim groups several destinations together and does not establish equivalent dates, room categories, inclusions, or final trip totals.

How to make a fair cost comparison
Compare complete itineraries for the same dates and party, rather than putting one hotel quote beside a package headline. A Goa stay and an overseas resort may appear comparable while differing in room standard, inclusions, or costs outside the room rate.
- Dates: Use the same check-in and check-out dates. Christmas and New Year dates can differ substantially from early December or shoulder-season dates.
- Departure and flights: Start from the same Indian departure city and include airfare, baggage allowances, fare conditions, and airport transfers.
- Party, nights, and room: Match the number of travellers, length of stay, hotel standard, room category, and cancellation terms.
- What is included: Check meals, transfers, and activities, and identify any mandatory taxes or charges not included in the quoted amount.
- Overseas costs: Add visa charges, travel insurance, foreign-exchange costs, and any relevant personal expenses.
- Festive charges: Check whether an event or seasonal surcharge applies, and whether it is included in the displayed rate.
Why an overseas package headline may not be the total
A Southern Travels Bali itinerary illustrates the difference between an advertised package rate and the full cost of a trip. The operator’s document lists international flights, visa charges, overseas medical insurance, GST, and personal costs among its exclusions, and says festive-season surcharges can apply. Its quoted prices were valid only through 30 September 2026, so they are not current offers or a basis for pricing a trip now.

That example does not establish what a present-day Bali or Vietnam trip costs. It shows why a useful comparison must account for exclusions and surcharges rather than relying on the first package figure shown.

Shift dates or book ahead
If your dates are flexible, compare Christmas–New Year with early December or other shoulder dates. If you need to travel in December or January, the department’s advice is to book accommodation well in advance rather than assume rooms will remain available at the same rate.

Compare areas and accommodation categories
Goa’s tourism guidance describes budget, mid-range, and upmarket accommodation and notes that rural areas may be cheaper than cities and popular coastal belts. Its illustrative rupee amounts are undated, so use the categories and location guidance to frame your search—not as current quotations.
Compare the full trip total
Before deciding that Goa, Bali, or Vietnam is the better-value choice, add accommodation, transport, meals, activities, taxes, and any destination-specific charges for the exact trip you would take. Without current quotes based on the same dates, departure city, party size, hotel standard, and itinerary, there is no verified basis here for naming one destination as the cheaper option.
