Apple is now showing iOS 27.0.1 as the prominent update offer on iPhones still running iOS 26, with iOS 26.7.1 listed separately under “Also Available,” according to an October 8, 2026 report by MacRumors. That changes which option is most visible; it does not, by itself, mean you must install iOS 27.
Why is iOS 27 appearing first?
MacRumors reported on October 8, 2026 that Apple changed the Software Update screen for users on iOS 26: iOS 27.0.1 is now the main offer, while iOS 26.7.1 appears in a smaller “Also Available” section. Apple’s official release list confirms both versions are available, but does not document this change in screen layout. The reported change is about prominence, not a notice that iOS 27 installation is mandatory.
MacRumors also reported that Apple had not shared iOS 27 adoption figures as of October 8. The revised placement alone does not show how many people have upgraded.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

No—not solely because it appears first on the update screen. Apple says users can decide whether to update or upgrade when an update is available, unless software-update management has been applied to the device. A work- or school-managed iPhone may therefore be subject to an administrator’s update policies; the screen’s layout does not tell you whether your device is managed.

What are the two update options?
Apple’s security release list dates iOS 27.0.1 and iOS 26.7.1 to September 28, 2026. One is the current major-version track; the other is an update for the earlier iOS 26 track.
| Option | What it means | What Apple lists |
|---|---|---|
| iOS 27.0.1 | Move from iOS 26 to the newer major version. | Released September 28, 2026. Apple’s security release list has no published CVE entries for this version; that statement does not establish that the release has no security relevance. |
| iOS 26.7.1 | Stay on the iOS 26 track and install its listed update. | Released September 28, 2026. |
Apple lists the original iOS 27 release as September 14, 2026. It also says an installed iOS update cannot be downgraded to the previous version. Consider that before choosing a major-version upgrade; the available information does not establish comparative battery life, performance, or features for these two options.

How to check and install an update
- On your iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Review the version shown and its details. Check whether iOS 27 is compatible with your model.
- Make a backup before updating. Apple advises backing up to keep a copy of important information.
- If you choose an available update, tap Download and Install. If the update has already downloaded, Apple says you can choose Update Now or Update Tonight.
Which iPhones can install iOS 27?
Apple’s compatibility guide lists iPhone 11 and later as compatible, as well as iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). The guide includes iPhone 12 through iPhone 18 families. Check the model-specific list on Apple’s iOS compatibility page rather than assuming that every iPhone running iOS 26 can move to iOS 27.
