A network switch usually should not cause a major Internet speed drop on its own. Compare the same computer’s Internet speed when connected directly to the router and when connected through the switch, then check its Ethernet link rate, cables, and ports. Those checks can narrow down the problem, but without your equipment details and test results, they cannot identify a specific failed component.

First, compare direct and switched connections

Connect the same computer directly to the router, run an Internet speed test, then connect it through the switch and repeat. Keep the test service and other conditions as consistent as practical. A direct-to-router result that is already slow does not establish the switch as the cause; the router, modem, ISP connection, or test conditions may need attention. TP-Link’s switch troubleshooting guidance is scoped to cases where a PC has normal download speed when connected directly to the router (TP-Link troubleshooting guide).

Record three separate results rather than treating them as interchangeable:

  • Direct-to-router Internet speed: the baseline for the same computer and test.
  • Switched Internet speed: the result when that computer is connected through the switch.
  • Ethernet link speed: the rate negotiated between the computer’s adapter and the directly connected router or switch port. It is not an Internet speed-test result (TP-Link: Check Ethernet Speed on a Wired Connection).

Check the negotiated Ethernet link speed

Look up the Ethernet link rate on the computer and compare it with the capabilities of the computer’s network adapter and the port it is connected to. On Windows, TP-Link’s guide describes viewing the Ethernet speed in the network connection status. On macOS, it gives the path System Settings > Network > Ethernet > Details > Hardware. Labels can vary across operating-system versions.

A result of 100 Mbps on a computer and switch that both support gigabit Ethernet is a useful clue to investigate, not proof that the switch is defective. Check that every relevant port—including the router port used for the switch uplink—supports gigabit speeds, and then examine the cable and negotiation settings. TP-Link discusses a 100 Mbps link in this context (TP-Link troubleshooting guide).

Check the cable and ports

  1. Reseat both ends of the Ethernet cable and confirm they are plugged into the intended router, switch, and computer ports.
  2. Inspect the cable and connectors for visible damage, looseness, or strain.
  3. Substitute a known-good cable and test again. Cisco cautions that “A link light does not guarantee that the cable is fully functional”; a marginal cable can maintain a link while still causing packet errors (Cisco: Troubleshoot LAN Switching Environments).
  4. Try another suitable switch port as a separate check.

A standards-compliant Cat6 cable is a reasonable known-good replacement when the installed cable is suspect. The available guidance supports substitution as a troubleshooting step, not the claim that buying Cat6 will improve speed when the existing link is already healthy (Cable Matters Cat6 guide).

Check speed and duplex settings

For the unmanaged-switch scenario in TP-Link’s guidance, leave the router and PC network adapter on auto-negotiation (TP-Link troubleshooting guide). Do not force a speed or duplex setting on only one device without checking the documentation and settings of its link partner. Cisco identifies speed/duplex incompatibility, including half-duplex versus full-duplex mismatch on 10/100 Mbps Ethernet links, as a potential performance problem (Cisco troubleshooting guidance; Cisco: Duplex Mismatch).

Test local transfers to separate the switch from the Internet path

A local file transfer between two computers connected to the switch can help distinguish a local switching problem from an Internet or router-path problem. Disconnect other devices from the switch for the test, connect two PCs, and transfer a large file. TP-Link recommends this approach in its switch troubleshooting guidance (TP-Link troubleshooting guide).

  • Local transfer is healthy, but Internet speed through the switch is poor: check the router’s port and settings, then investigate the router’s upstream connection.
  • Local transfer is also poor: repeat with a known-good cable and another switch port. If the problem persists, a switch or endpoint configuration issue becomes more plausible.

This test narrows the likely fault domain; by itself, it does not identify which component is at fault.

Use the results to choose the next check

What you observe What it suggests Next check
Internet speed is poor both directly to the router and through the switch The switch has not been established as the cause. Investigate the router, modem, ISP connection, and test conditions.
Direct-to-router speed is normal, but speed through the switch is poor; negotiated link rate is unexpectedly low The wired link may be limited by port capability, cable condition, or negotiation. Verify the capabilities of both link partners, substitute a known-good cable, and check compatible negotiation settings.
Local transfer through the switch is healthy, but Internet speed through it is poor The local transfer result points away from a general local switching-path problem. Check the switch uplink, router port and settings, and upstream path.
Local transfer is also poor A local cable, port, switch, or endpoint configuration problem is more plausible. Repeat with a known-good cable and another port; persistent results warrant checking the switch and endpoint configuration.

The exact cause depends on details such as the switch, router, and network-adapter models, the ISP plan, the cable’s condition, the negotiated link rate, and the test results. A speed drop alone is not enough to diagnose a failed switch.
