IntelliJ IDEA moved its bug reports and feature requests from JIRA to JetBrains’ YouTrack in September 2009. JetBrains said the team made the switch after a brief test-drive; the announcement concerned issue tracking, not IntelliJ IDEA code or users’ projects.

What changed in September 2009?

JetBrains’ September 2009 announcement said IntelliJ IDEA had migrated its bugs and feature requests from JIRA to YouTrack, JetBrains’ new issue tracker. The company described YouTrack 1.0 as a beta. Its post directed people submitting reports to IDEA: Feedback, while IDEA: Backlog and IDEA: Development were open for public viewing and comments. Read JetBrains’ announcement.

This was a change in the system used to organize reports and feature requests. The announcement does not describe a migration of IntelliJ IDEA itself, customer projects, or source code.

Why did IntelliJ IDEA switch to YouTrack?

JetBrains said the team made the change after a brief test-drive, but the announcement does not give a detailed rationale or claim that any particular feature caused the decision. It highlighted three aspects of YouTrack 1.0 as product capabilities:

  • Keyboard shortcuts for common operations.
  • Query-based search, with intelligent query completion and saved searches.
  • Commands for applying changes to multiple selected issues.

These were JetBrains’ descriptions at the time, not independent comparative test results against JIRA. The announcement provides no measured performance, security, satisfaction, or cost comparison.

How did JetBrains’ use of YouTrack develop?

The September 2009 post said YouTrack was also being used to track issues for TeamCity, dotTrace, MPS, and Web IDE. In May 2010, JetBrains described YouTrack as the issue tracker used across its products. That later statement confirms broader use by then, but does not establish exactly when each product adopted it. JetBrains’ May 2010 YouTrack 2.0 post.

What is different about YouTrack and IntelliJ IDEA integration today?

Modern IDE integration is separate from the 2009 migration. YouTrack Cloud documentation for version 2026.2 describes native integrations with JetBrains IDEs, including issue navigation—making issue IDs in changelists and commit messages clickable—and task management, which lets a YouTrack issue become the IDE’s current work context. See the YouTrack Cloud IDE integration documentation.

JetBrains also described a YouTrack plugin for IntelliJ-based IDEs in a June 2021 post, offering in-IDE access to issues and notifications. Read the 2021 plugin announcement. Neither modern integration nor the plugin should be read back into the 2009 announcement as a feature of the original switch.

What current migration information does—and does not—tell us

JetBrains’ March 2, 2026 roadmap discusses planned migration work from other tools and continued support for YouTrack Server and Cloud. Roadmap items describe plans, not proof that a feature is already available. See the YouTrack 2026 roadmap.

Current YouTrack documentation also explains migration between YouTrack Server and Cloud, including splitting an installation. Those instructions concern YouTrack-to-YouTrack moves; they do not document how IntelliJ IDEA’s JIRA-to-YouTrack transition was carried out in 2009. Read the YouTrack migration documentation.
