Intel’s October 31, 2024, third-quarter report combined a $16.6 billion GAAP net loss with revenue that beat analyst expectations and a fourth-quarter revenue forecast above estimates. Reuters said Intel shares rose more than 7% in extended trading after the announcement. The market move was historical after-hours trading—not a current stock update—and “beat” did not mean Intel was profitable.

What Intel reported for Q3 2024

Intel reported $13.3 billion in revenue for the quarter, down 6% from a year earlier. It recorded a GAAP net loss attributable to Intel of $16.6 billion; the company’s SEC filing gives the more precise figure as $16.639 billion. GAAP diluted loss per share was $3.88. Intel also reported a non-GAAP loss of $0.46 per share, so the company was unprofitable under both measures.

The “earnings beat” description refers to revenue exceeding analysts’ expectations, as Reuters reported, and to guidance for the next quarter coming in above estimates. It does not describe positive net income or positive earnings per share.

Why the loss reached $16.6 billion

Intel’s release described a combined $15.9 billion impact from impairment and restructuring charges. It also identified a $9.9 billion non-cash charge related to a valuation allowance against U.S. deferred tax assets. The release said the $15.9 billion in impairment charges and $2.8 billion in restructuring charges had an additional $3.89 impact on GAAP earnings per share. These figures describe overlapping accounting categories; they should not be added together as though each were a separate, non-overlapping charge.

Among the detailed items Intel disclosed were $3.1 billion in charges, substantially non-cash, for manufacturing-asset impairment and accelerated depreciation, with a substantial majority tied to Intel 7; and $2.9 billion in non-cash goodwill and acquired-intangible impairments, primarily associated with Mobileye. The company reported $2.8 billion in restructuring charges, of which $528 million were non-cash and $2.2 billion were expected to be cash-settled in the future.

The $16.6 billion GAAP loss is an accounting result, not evidence that Intel paid out $16.6 billion in cash during the quarter. Intel said that goodwill and intangible-asset impairments and the deferred-tax valuation allowance did not affect non-GAAP loss per share. Manufacturing-asset impairment and accelerated depreciation did affect both GAAP and non-GAAP measures. The difference between GAAP and non-GAAP results therefore reflects adjustments to particular items, not a change from loss to profit.

Why Intel shares rose after the report

Reuters reported that Intel’s quarterly revenue exceeded analyst expectations and that its fourth-quarter revenue forecast was above estimates. The company projected Q4 2024 revenue of $13.3 billion to $14.3 billion and GAAP diluted earnings per share of negative $0.24. Those were October 2024 forecasts, not actual results or Intel’s current outlook.

Reuters reported that shares rose more than 7% in extended trading following the announcement, after initially making larger gains. The reaction is consistent with investors weighing revenue and the forward outlook against expectations, even as the reported GAAP loss was severe. It does not establish that every investor responded for the same reason, nor does one after-hours move demonstrate a sustained turnaround.

What Intel’s management said

CEO Pat Gelsinger said in the October 31, 2024, earnings release: “Our Q3 results underscore the solid progress we are making against the plan we outlined last quarter to reduce costs, simplify our portfolio and improve organizational efficiency.” That is management’s characterization of its restructuring plan, not independent evidence that the turnaround had succeeded.

How to read the headline without conflating the figures

  • GAAP loss: $16.6 billion net loss attributable to Intel and $3.88 diluted loss per share.
  • Adjusted result: a $0.46 non-GAAP loss per share—not a profit.
  • Revenue: $13.3 billion, down 6% year over year but above analyst expectations, according to Reuters.
  • Forward outlook: October 2024 Q4 guidance of $13.3 billion to $14.3 billion in revenue, reported as above estimates.
  • Stock move: more than 7% higher in extended trading after the release, as Reuters reported; this is not a later closing return.

These distinctions explain how a company can report a large GAAP loss while still beating expectations on a measure such as revenue and prompting a positive immediate market reaction.
