Instagram’s “AI info” label does not necessarily mean your entire photo was generated by AI. Meta says it can apply the label when it detects industry-shared AI signals in a file’s metadata or when the person who posted the content discloses AI use. Some AI-related edits, including minor changes, can leave signals that trigger a label.
To understand a specific post, open the label or its menu for Instagram’s explanation. If you have the original image file, you can also check whether it contains Content Credentials. Neither check alone proves whether the scene is real or whether every part of the image was AI-generated.
What Instagram’s “AI info” label means
Meta says it uses industry standards and technology, including C2PA, to help identify content generated or edited with AI outside advertising. Its current explanation says the label may be based on signals shared by the industry or on a user’s disclosure. Meta’s explanation of its labeling approach describes the company’s stated process; it is not a guarantee that every AI tool or editing workflow will be detected.

The label concerns information Meta has received or detected about AI-related creation or editing. It is not, by itself, a verdict that the whole image is synthetic, that the pictured event did not happen, or that the photographer intended to mislead viewers. C2PA describes its standard as a way to record a media item’s origin and history—its provenance—not as an independent fact-check of the scene. C2PA’s overview of content provenance explains that distinction.

Why a genuine photograph can get the label
An edit may leave an AI signal
Meta’s 2024 policy history helps explain why photographers have encountered the label on real photographs. In July 2024, Meta said minor modifications, such as retouching, could carry industry-standard indicators that led to the “Made with AI” label. The company then changed the label to “AI info” to give people more context. In September 2024, Meta said it would move the label for content it detected as only modified or edited with AI tools into the post menu, while continuing to display a label for content it detected as AI-generated. Meta’s policy explanation, including its July and September 2024 updates, records that change.
Metadata can travel with an image
Some image files carry machine-readable information about how they were made or edited. Meta said in February 2024 that it was developing ways to identify invisible markers, including AI-generated information in C2PA and IPTC technical standards. At that time, Meta named several companies whose images it hoped to identify as they implemented metadata signals. That was a statement of its plan then, not a promise of complete coverage today. Meta’s February 2024 explanation gives the historical context.
As a result, a photo captured by a camera can still receive an AI-related signal after it is edited with an AI tool. That does not establish that the entire photograph—or the scene it depicts—was generated. The exact signal and editing history for a particular Instagram post may not be visible to viewers.

How to see why Instagram labeled a post

Open the Instagram post and tap the “AI info” label, if it is displayed.

If you do not see a label on the post itself, open the three-dot post menu and look for its AI information. Meta said labels for content it detects as only AI-modified or edited would move into that menu, while labels for content detected as AI-generated would remain displayed. The interface may change.

Read the context Instagram provides. Meta says the label can be based on an industry-shared signal or the uploader’s disclosure. The available explanation may not identify the exact tool, edit, or metadata field that prompted it.

Instagram’s label context is the most direct way to learn what Meta says about that post. It does not necessarily expose the underlying file metadata or provide a detailed edit history.
How to check the original photo for Content Credentials
If you took the photograph, start with the original file on your device or in your camera’s original export—not a screenshot or a copy downloaded from social media. A reposted or processed copy may not retain the provenance information present in the original.

If the file contains Content Credentials, review the details shown. Adobe says Inspect can identify credentials in a file or screenshot, display their details, and help users explore changes over time. Credential details may include who created the content, how it was made, and whether generative AI was used. See Adobe’s Content Credentials documentation.

A positive result means the tool found credential information in the file; it does not independently establish that the pictured scene is true or false. If Inspect finds no credentials, that is not proof that no AI tool was used. The available sources do not establish comprehensive detection or preservation across every editing tool, export setting, and upload workflow.
Which check should you use?

Use Instagram’s explanation when your question is why the post was labeled. Use file inspection when you want to see provenance details recorded in an image you have. The two checks answer different questions, and neither is a definitive test of whether a scene is authentic.
