India supplied 44% of smartphones imported into the United States in Q2 2025, measured by where the phones were assembled. That put India ahead of China for that quarter—but it does not mean Indian-owned brands made 44% of US phone sales. Omdia says Apple’s accelerated move to assemble more phones in India was the main driver of the change.
What the 44% figure measures
The figure is the share of US smartphone imports assembled in India during Q2 2025, not a measure of brand nationality, retail sales, or the share of phones made by Indian companies. Omdia reported that India became the leading assembly location for smartphones sold in the US for the first time in that quarter. The result is a snapshot of sourcing in April through June 2025, not evidence that India remains the leading supplier today.
Omdia’s July 2025 release is the primary source for the figures and its explanation of the shift.

How India’s share compared with China and Vietnam
Omdia reported a sharp year-over-year change in the assembly mix. Canalys, part of Omdia, also reported Vietnam’s Q2 2025 share in an official post. Figures are rounded, so country percentages may not total exactly 100%.

The two reports use closely related descriptions—smartphone imports and shipments to the US—and both frame the figures by manufacturing or assembly origin. Vietnam’s 30% figure comes from Canalys/Omdia’s official post.
Why India’s share rose
Apple shifted more US-bound assembly to India
Omdia identified Apple’s accelerated supply-chain shift to India as the main driver. It said Apple had dedicated most of its India export capacity to the US so far in 2025 and had begun manufacturing and assembling iPhone 16 series Pro models in India. Those statements describe production activity; they do not establish the assembly origin of any individual phone sold at retail.

Other manufacturers also increased India supply
Omdia said Samsung and Motorola expanded India supply for the US market, but more slowly and on a smaller scale than Apple. Samsung relied mainly on Vietnam, while Apple and Motorola retained core manufacturing hubs in China. The change was therefore not a simple industry-wide switch from China to India.

Tariff uncertainty shaped timing
Omdia analysts linked the sourcing shift to uncertainty around US-China trade negotiations and anticipated tariff risk. Senior Analyst Runar Bjorhovde said vendors were “frontload[ing] devices and maintain[ing] high inventory levels” to cope with the risk of tariffs later in the year. Omdia also said Apple built inventory toward the end of Q1 and sought to maintain it in Q2, while Samsung scaled up inventory in Q2. This is the analysts’ explanation of company behavior during the period; it does not establish that tariffs alone caused the shift or predict later tariff effects.

What the shipment growth figures add
India-made smartphone volume rose 240% year over year in Q2 2025, while the overall US smartphone shipment market grew 1% year over year, according to Omdia. The contrast indicates a major change in sourcing mix during a period of modest market growth; it is not a comparison of India’s share of consumer purchases with total sales.
Omdia separately reported that Apple shipments declined 11% year over year to 13.3 million units, Samsung shipments grew 38% to 8.3 million, and Motorola shipments grew 2% to 3.2 million in the quarter. Those are brand shipment figures, distinct from the assembly-origin percentages. Omdia also described demand as tepid and the gap between sell-in and sell-through as widening, so shipments and inventory should not be treated as a direct measure of consumer demand.

Did India overtake China as the top smartphone supplier to the US?
By assembly location, yes: India had the largest reported share of US smartphone imports in Q2 2025 at 44%, compared with China’s 25%. This answers the question for that quarter only. It does not mean Indian brands overtook Apple or other brands in US sales, and the available figures do not establish a later country-of-assembly ranking.

Assembly location is useful context for understanding how manufacturers organize supply chains, but the cited figures do not show that phones assembled in India are better, worse, cheaper, or more reliable than otherwise comparable phones assembled elsewhere. They are market-sourcing data, not a product-quality comparison or buying recommendation.
