WebP appears because the website (or its image-delivery system) supplied a WebP file optimized for web transfer. Saving it does not mean your computer changed a JPG or PNG into WebP. To get a JPG or PNG, first look for an original file or download option; otherwise decode the WebP with a real image converter. Renaming .webp to .jpg or .png is not conversion and can leave the file unusable.
Why websites use WebP
WebP was designed for efficient delivery over the internet. The format specification describes it as “optimized for fast image transfer over the network (for example, for websites)” (RFC 9649). A site can therefore send a WebP representation even when the source image was originally created as a JPEG or PNG.
Smaller downloads improve page-load performance and reduce bandwidth. Google’s WebP documentation reports that, in its comparisons, lossless WebP images were 26% smaller than PNG files, while lossy WebP images were 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality (Google WebP documentation). Those are documented comparisons, not a promise that every image will shrink by exactly those amounts.

WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation. A photograph may be delivered as lossy WebP, while an illustration with transparent pixels may use lossless WebP. An animated WebP can contain multiple frames, unlike a conventional single-frame JPG.

Why Save As may produce a .webp file
The file extension commonly reflects the representation that the page made available. If the image URL returns WebP, a browser’s save action may preserve that representation. Exact behavior varies with the website, image URL and browser; it is not safe to assume that every browser always saves response bytes unchanged.
Some sites use responsive images or a content-delivery service that chooses a format for your browser. The visible picture can look identical while the underlying URL points to a WebP resource. If the publisher offers a separate “original,” “download,” or “full resolution” link, that is the best way to obtain the source format. Otherwise, conversion is required.
Check what you actually downloaded
- Check the filename and properties. A
.webpextension is a useful clue, but file information from your operating system or image editor can confirm the detected format. - Open the file in an image application. The application usually displays the format, pixel dimensions, color mode and whether animation or transparency is present.
- Inspect the image link. Open the image itself in a new tab and examine the address. A URL ending in
.webpis an obvious indication, but format-converting delivery systems may use URLs without an extension. - Look for an original download. Stock-photo sites, design tools and media libraries sometimes provide a menu with JPG, PNG, WebP or original-file choices. Use that option instead of converting when it exists.
Choose JPG, PNG or WebP

MDN’s image format guide provides practical comparisons. Choose based on the receiving application, transparency or animation requirements, acceptable fidelity and file size—not on the assumption that a different extension improves the picture.
How to get a JPG or PNG from WebP
Method 1: Download a source file offered by the site
Before converting, check the image’s download controls, a “view original” link, or the asset library where it was uploaded. A genuine source JPG or PNG avoids an unnecessary decode-and-re-encode cycle. Keep a copy of the WebP as well, because it may be the highest-quality representation the site provides.
Method 2: Use an image editor or trusted converter
Open the WebP in an editor that supports it, choose Export or Save As, and select PNG or JPEG as the output format. Use PNG for transparency or pixel-precise graphics. Use JPEG for a photographic image when the destination does not accept WebP and a smaller file is more useful. If a quality slider is available, avoid repeatedly exporting the same file; each lossy JPEG export can compound artifacts.

For a web-based converter, avoid uploading confidential images unless you understand its privacy and retention terms. A desktop application keeps the conversion local. In either case, preserve the original WebP before creating the new file.
Method 3: Convert WebP to PNG with Google’s command-line utility
Google’s WebP documentation demonstrates the dwebp decoder. After installing the current WebP tools for your operating system, run:
dwebp image.webp -o image.pngThe command decodes image.webp and writes a PNG. Use a different output path if you need to keep an existing file. This route is useful for repeatable scripts and local processing. The command shown by Google is specifically for PNG; use an editor or another trusted converter when JPEG output or a graphical workflow is required. Method 4: Convert a batch without losing the originals
For many files, place the WebP originals in a separate input directory and write converted files to an output directory. Keep the original filenames plus a new extension, and verify a sample of the outputs before deleting anything. A batch process should stop on conversion errors rather than silently replacing source files. Check dimensions, transparency and animation for representative files; a tool may flatten animation or drop metadata when producing a different format.
What conversion can and cannot preserve
- Pixels: Decoding a lossy WebP cannot recreate detail that was removed during its original encoding.
- Further loss: WebP-to-JPEG is another lossy encode. Use the highest-quality source available and avoid multiple generations.
- Transparency: PNG can retain transparent pixels; JPEG cannot. Converting transparent artwork to JPEG usually adds a solid background.
- Animation: WebP may contain animation. A PNG or JPEG export may produce one frame unless the conversion software explicitly supports an animated target format.
- Metadata: Editing or conversion can remove profiles, comments or other metadata. If color accuracy or camera data matters, inspect the exported file and preserve the original.
- Dimensions: Changing format does not automatically increase resolution. Upscaling during export creates larger pixels, not new captured detail.
Troubleshooting WebP conversion
The renamed JPG or PNG will not open
Changing a suffix changes only the name, not the encoded bytes. Restore the original extension and perform a real decode-and-encode conversion with an editor, trusted converter or dwebp.

The output has a black or solid background
The source likely contains transparency and the chosen output format or export settings flattened it. Export to PNG and check the editor’s transparency options. JPEG has no transparency channel.

You may be viewing a lossy WebP that was encoded at a lower quality, or you may have compressed it again as JPEG. Find the site’s original download if available, export once from that source, and use a higher JPEG quality setting when JPEG is unavoidable. PNG can prevent another lossy step but cannot restore missing detail.
Only one frame of an animation was saved
That is expected when the target is a still-image format or when the converter does not support animated output. Keep the animated WebP, or choose a workflow and target format that explicitly supports animation.
The command reports that the file is invalid
Confirm that the download completed and that the file is actually WebP rather than an HTML error page saved with an image-looking name. Re-download it, check the file size, and open it in an editor. If the image is valid but the utility is old, consult the current WebP tools instructions and update the installation.
The website keeps downloading WebP
The site is likely serving WebP as its available or preferred representation. Search its download menu for an original file; if none exists, save the WebP and convert it locally. There is no reliable benefit to forcing a different extension without changing the encoded format.
