The title’s price points alone do not establish why the $9 pack was removed or whether customers benefited: the pack’s included lookup count, expiry rules, and the product’s results are not specified. The arithmetic is clear, though: at $0.10 per lookup, usage pricing totals $9 at 90 lookups, costs less below that, and more above it—assuming the $9 pack had no other material terms. That is a spend comparison, not proof that either offer was better value.

What the $9-to-$0.10 change tells us—and what it does not

A $0.10 lookup charge replaces a fixed upfront payment with a bill that rises with use. The break-even point against $9 is 90 lookups: 90 × $0.10 = $9. Below 90, per-lookup spending is lower; above 90, it is higher. This comparison assumes only the stated prices. Without the pack’s allowance, expiration, and other terms, it cannot establish which offer was cheaper for a particular customer.

The title does not identify the product, explain the decision, or report what happened after the change. So it would be misleading to claim the pack caused waste, that the new price improved retention, or that the business made more money. Those conclusions require product-specific customer, usage, and cost data.

When is “per lookup” a good pricing metric?

A lookup fee works best when customers can understand what counts as one lookup, estimate how many they will make, and see a clear connection between each lookup and the value they receive. Stripe’s usage-pricing guidance describes a strong metric as tied to value, legible before signup, and measurable. If customers cannot predict the count—or disagree about what qualifies—the price may be difficult to budget for even if the rate is simple.

Choose between per-use pricing, a pack, and a hybrid

There is no universal winner. Compare the models using real customer behavior and costs rather than assuming that removing a pack is inherently better. A pack can make spending more predictable but may leave customers with unused prepaid balance. Per-use pricing aligns charges with measured consumption but can make bills variable or discourage activity. A hybrid—such as a recurring base price that includes some usage, followed by per-lookup charges—can combine an access fee with a usage component. Stripe also describes free credits, committed-use discounts, and bundles as packaging options to evaluate.

Decision factor Questions to answer
Usage distribution How many lookups do light, typical, and heavy users make, and how stable are those patterns?
Customer value and clarity Does each lookup map to visible value, and can buyers forecast how many they will need?
Bill control Can customers monitor usage, set a spending limit, receive alerts, and understand what happens when they reach a limit or allowance?
Unit economics What are the variable service, payment, billing, and support costs at each usage level? Product-specific costs are not established here.
Behavior and retention Does a charge on each lookup reduce adoption or use? Does a prepaid pack leave balances unused? The answer must come from this product’s evidence.
Profit, not just revenue At actual usage levels, how do customer spend and contribution margin compare? Higher revenue by itself does not establish higher profit.

Academic findings reinforce the need for context rather than a blanket rule. A 2024 peer-reviewed model by Wu, Jin, and Liu found that the relative performance of component selling and pure bundling varied across pay-per-use and subscription structures, with results depending on multi-unit demand. It is a theoretical model, not a forecast for an unspecified lookup product. Read the article abstract.

Likewise, a Columbia Business School summary of a 2012 telecommunications field experiment reports that a two-part tariff—an access fee plus usage charges—had 10.5% lower average annual retention and 38.7% lower average yearly usage than pay per use in that setting. Yet the two-part tariff still maximized profit in the study; ignoring the pricing-structure/access-fee effect would have reduced firm profit by 11%. These are findings from a particular telecommunications experiment, not expected results for a lookup service. See Columbia Business School’s summary.

A separate 2011 congestion model by Cachon and Feldman found subscription pricing more effective at earning revenue under its modeled conditions. The authors explain that subscriptions give firms less control over usage, which can be a disadvantage when customers dislike congestion. That model’s result is conditional, not a universal empirical verdict about subscriptions. Read the article abstract.

Make variable bills predictable and trustworthy

Usage pricing depends on more than choosing a rate. Stripe breaks the billing chain into metering (measuring usage), rating (turning measured usage into a monetary amount), and invoicing and collection. Errors or ambiguity at any stage can undermine confidence in the bill. Its guidance also warns that an unpredictable metric, weak usage visibility, or launching without spending caps can erode trust.

Before launch, decide how customers can answer practical billing questions: “What if I exceed my included usage?”, “Can I set a spending limit?”, “Will I be notified before my bill increases?”, and “What happens to my current contract?” These are useful questions to address in the offer and billing interface, not documented feedback from this product’s customers.

If changing an existing offer, migrate customers in stages

For an established SaaS product, Stripe’s April 7, 2026 guidance recommends introducing the model to new customers first, then inviting existing customers to opt in, before broader rollout by segment. It advises extra care with high-risk accounts and existing contracts. This is vendor guidance; it does not establish that the title’s author used this approach.

  1. Model customer bills: Use historical usage where available to estimate what each customer would have paid under the new rate.
  2. Explain the change: Define the billable metric, rate, sample bills, and overage rules in plain language.
  3. Respect existing terms: Check applicable contract commitments before changing an account’s pricing.
  4. Roll out by cohort: Start with new customers, offer an opt-in path to existing customers, and expand in segments while watching accounts at higher risk.
  5. Track outcomes: Monitor conversion, expansion revenue, churn during the first 90 days, and billing-related support volume.

What evidence would explain why the pack was killed?

To support a causal account of the decision, the company would need to disclose the old pack’s exact allowance and expiry rules; lookup counts by customer and cohort; the share of credits left unused; conversion and repeat-purchase patterns; support complaints; cost per lookup; and revenue and gross margin before and after the change. Customer interviews or test results could help explain whether the new metric felt clearer or fairer. Without that evidence, the reason for the change and its outcome remain unestablished.
