I prefer using my own Wi-Fi router because it lets me choose the settings, features, and update practices. That is a personal preference, not proof that every ISP-provided router is insecure or that a retail router is automatically faster or safer. The right choice depends on your equipment, ISP, home, and willingness to manage updates and settings.

What a Wi-Fi router does—and what it does not replace

A router manages traffic between your home devices and your internet connection, and provides Wi-Fi. It does not provide the internet service itself. Depending on your connection, you may still need an ISP modem, an optical network terminal (ONT), or other provider equipment. A router manufacturer likewise notes that its router still requires an active ISP connection and modem: Linksys support.

First identify what you have. A single ISP box may combine a modem or other access equipment, a router, and Wi-Fi in one gateway. Some gateways also support provider-specific services, such as voice, television/IPTV, or MoCA. Replacing the whole box without checking those functions can interrupt services or leave you without a working connection.

When your own router may be worth it

You want control over security settings

The Federal Trade Commission recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption, unique administrator and Wi-Fi passwords, and current router software. It also advises people with ISP-provided routers to ask the provider whether it sends automatic updates. Those are useful checks for any router; they do not establish that ISP equipment generally lacks them. Read the FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance.

  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

NIST’s September 10, 2024, consumer-router cybersecurity report describes expectations for secure, authorized software updates, including applying updates automatically or consistently notifying customers. It is a framework for evaluating update support, not a certification of any particular retail router. See the NIST publication record and full report.

You need settings the ISP device does not provide

Different routers expose different controls and features. Before switching, compare the settings you actually use with what the ISP equipment offers. More controls can be useful, but they also mean you may be responsible for configuring and maintaining them.

You have a specific Wi-Fi coverage or performance problem

A home router can affect Wi-Fi performance, but replacing it alone does not guarantee faster or more reliable internet. Placement, interference, the devices connecting to Wi-Fi, the internet service, and other bottlenecks can all matter. The FCC’s broadband measurement material treats the modem, home network, and consumer devices as distinct parts of the broadband path and notes that Wi-Fi router limitations can affect experienced performance. See the FCC Measuring Broadband America report material.

When keeping the ISP router is the simpler choice

Keeping the provider’s equipment may be practical if it already meets your needs, receives updates, supports current encryption, and is required for services you use. It can also avoid configuration work and compatibility surprises. Check the device’s update practices and security settings rather than assuming its source determines its safety.

  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

There is no general savings amount or payback period established for switching. Compare your actual equipment charge, if any, with the price of a router you would buy and the cost of any modem or gateway you still need. The available evidence also does not establish a general speed improvement from replacing ISP equipment.

Choose between keeping, adding, or replacing equipment

Option When it can fit What to verify
Keep the ISP gateway It meets your needs or provides functions you rely on. Update delivery, WPA2 or WPA3 support, available controls, and any equipment charge.
Add your own router behind the gateway You want a different router while retaining provider equipment. Whether the ISP and devices support a documented bridge or access-point configuration, and whether provider-specific functions remain available.
Replace the gateway or router Your ISP permits replacement and the new setup supports your connection and services. Whether a separate modem or ONT is still required, device compatibility, and any voice, TV/IPTV, MoCA, or provider-management functions.

Connecting a second router without a suitable configuration can create double NAT. In certain deployments described in the FCC’s technical appendix, a study device operated as a transparent bridge to prevent double NAT; the appendix also describes gateway features, including MoCA and IPTV, that the study device could not provide. These examples are not a universal instruction to bridge every gateway. Check your ISP’s and device’s documentation for the supported setup: FCC technical appendix to the Tenth Measuring Broadband America Report.

What to check before you buy or connect a router

  1. Identify your equipment. Determine whether your current device is a separate router, a modem-router gateway, or another access device such as an ONT.
  2. Ask your ISP what must stay. Confirm whether customer-owned routers are supported and whether modem access, voice, IPTV, MoCA, or provider-management features depend on the current gateway.
  3. Choose a supported arrangement. If retaining the gateway, follow ISP and device instructions for bridge or access-point operation. If replacing equipment, confirm that the new arrangement is allowed and compatible with your connection.
  4. Evaluate update support and security. Look for a clear update process and WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal. Set unique administrator and Wi-Fi credentials during setup.
  5. Match Wi-Fi capability to your home. Consider coverage needs and the devices you use; a new router cannot by itself fix an ISP, interference, placement, or client-device problem.
  6. Review optional features. The FTC identifies remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) as features that can weaken security and advises turning them off. Decide whether you need each one before disabling it, because doing so may affect convenience or device compatibility.
  7. Compare actual costs. Weigh your real equipment charge against the purchase price and any additional equipment you still need. Do not assume a particular rental saving or payback period.

My reason for using my own router

I would choose my own router when the control, features, update support, and fit for my home justify the setup and cost. I would not replace an ISP router solely because it came from an ISP, or expect a new router to guarantee better security or faster internet. Check the actual device and connection first; the equipment that best fits your needs may be the ISP gateway, a router added behind it, or a supported replacement.
