Obsidian with the Excalidraw plugin is a practical alternative when you want sketches and diagrams tied to a local notes vault; Obsidian Canvas is better suited to arranging notes and media across a visual workspace. They solve related but different problems, so the choice depends on whether you need drawing, spatial organization, or a portable image for publishing elsewhere.
The “I ditched” framing describes a personal choice, not a verified account of which whiteboard apps were replaced or what prompted the switch. What can be compared is the documented workflow: Excalidraw drawings live in an Obsidian vault and link to notes, while Canvas provides a built-in space for cards and media.
Can you use Excalidraw inside Obsidian?
Yes. The community Excalidraw plugin stores and edits drawings in an Obsidian vault. Its documented features include embedding drawings in documents and linking drawings to notes and to other drawings. That makes a sketch part of the same linked-note environment rather than a separate visual board detached from your documents. See the Excalidraw plugin README for its feature details.

Canvas or Excalidraw: which fits the work?
Obsidian Canvas and the Excalidraw plugin both put information in a visual context, but their primary structures differ. Canvas is Obsidian’s built-in infinite space for arranging cards; Excalidraw is a sketching and diagram-drawing tool integrated with the vault.
| What matters | Excalidraw plugin | Obsidian Canvas |
|---|---|---|
| Primary use | Sketches and diagrams stored as editable drawings in the vault. (Plugin README) | Arrange notes, images, PDFs, videos, audio, webpages, and nested canvases in an infinite visual space. (Obsidian Canvas page) |
| Relationship to notes | Drawings can be embedded in documents and linked to notes or other drawings. (Plugin README) | Existing notes and media can be placed as cards; Canvas views can be nested. (Obsidian Canvas page) |
| File and export options | Exports drawings as PNG or SVG; these are rendered images rather than the native editable drawing experience. (Plugin README) | Stored locally in the open JSON Canvas format, which Obsidian says is designed to work with other tools. (Obsidian Canvas page) |
| Embedding and publishing | Can be embedded in vault documents. For Obsidian Publish, the README says to insert a PNG or SVG version. (Plugin README) | An embedded Canvas displays shapes, but not text inside its cards. (Obsidian Help) |
| History and device sync | The plugin README says full drawing history and device synchronization require an Obsidian Sync subscription; price not stated in the README. (Plugin README) | Not stated on the cited Canvas product page. |
Obsidian describes Canvas as free with Obsidian; the Excalidraw integration is a community plugin. The official Canvas page describes its visual workspace and file format. The table reflects documented features, not a speed or usability test.

How Excalidraw drawings work with notes and publishing
Embedding drawings in vault notes
The plugin supports embedding a drawing in an Obsidian document, and its links can connect drawings with notes and other drawings. Obsidian says embedded files display inline and stay up to date when their source changes. That describes the embed behavior; it does not make an exported PNG or SVG an editable drawing. See Obsidian’s embed help.
Publishing an Excalidraw drawing
The plugin README says Excalidraw drawings do not display in Obsidian Publish unless a PNG or SVG image is inserted. If you intend to publish, configure the plugin to insert an image export and use that image in the published note. The published representation is the rendered image, not the full interactive drawing experience.

Embedding Canvas has a content limitation
An embedded Canvas view in a note displays shapes but does not show text inside the cards. If readers need to see a card’s text in the note itself, do not assume that embedding the Canvas will expose that text inline; link to or open the Canvas instead. This limitation is documented in Obsidian’s embed help.
Are Obsidian Canvas files portable?
Canvas files are stored locally in the vault using the open JSON Canvas format. Obsidian says the format was designed to work with other tools. This gives Canvas a documented portability path at the file-format level, though it does not establish that every other application will preserve every Canvas feature when opening or editing a file.

Excalidraw offers PNG and SVG exports, useful when another app or a published page needs a rendered diagram. An image export is portable to view, but it does not carry the same editing experience as the original drawing inside the vault.
What to consider before switching
- Choose Excalidraw when the core task is drawing or diagramming and you want drawings linked to vault notes.
- Choose Canvas when you want to spatially arrange existing notes alongside media and other cards.
- Plan an export route if drawings must appear in Obsidian Publish or be used as images elsewhere; the plugin documentation specifies PNG or SVG for Publish.
- Check synchronization needs. The plugin README identifies Obsidian Sync as necessary for full drawing history and device synchronization.
One related security point matters if your workflow depends on viewing web pages inside Obsidian. Obsidian’s Web Viewer is a desktop core plugin, not a full replacement for a primary browser. Obsidian also warns that community plugins are not sandboxed and can have deep control over the app; it advises using a primary browser for sensitive or password-protected sites when third-party plugins are installed. Details are in Obsidian’s Web Viewer help.
