CodeInk is a desktop workspace for developers who use multiple coding agents and want to keep projects, sessions, files, terminals, and reviews together. Its maker has described the motivation as losing track of projects and sessions across separate apps. That explains the problem the tool is meant to address; it does not establish that CodeInk saves time or improves code quality.

What problem is CodeInk built to address?

When coding work is spread across several agent applications, project context and session activity can become difficult to follow in one place. CodeInk organizes that work around projects rather than presenting itself as another AI model. Its purpose is to provide a desktop view of supported agents and their activity.

The original article listing names Erzen Krasniqi as author and is dated September 23, but its full text is not available in the accessible listing. The motivation described here is therefore limited to the maker’s public framing of fragmented projects and sessions, rather than a reconstruction of the article’s personal history.

What CodeInk brings into one workspace

According to the official CodeInk README, the workspace groups projects, agent sessions, files, terminals, and reviews. It can show up to three live sessions in panes, with views of streaming responses, tool activity, edits, approval requests, and session history.

This is workflow visibility, not proof that every agent works identically inside CodeInk. The project documents native integrations for Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, and Pi. It also supports Agent Client Protocol (ACP) presets and custom agents. An ACP preset defines how an agent is launched; its presence should not be read as a claim that every agent version has been tested to the same degree.

How the agent options differ

Option What it means Account and model setup
Native integrations Documented integrations for Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, and Pi. Use the external agent’s own installation, sign-in, tools, and permissions.
ACP preset or custom agent A launch definition or user-configured agent using ACP; availability and behavior depend on that setup. Follow the chosen agent’s own installation and account requirements.
CodeInk Agent A built-in agent, distinct from the four external native integrations. Can use a key supplied by the user for Vercel AI Gateway or OpenRouter.

That distinction matters when choosing a workflow. If you already use an external agent, CodeInk’s role is to bring its work into a project-centered desktop workspace; the external tool still governs its own authentication and permissions. If you choose CodeInk Agent, you provide a supported gateway key, and the gateway arrangement is part of the workflow.

Where data goes

The README says CodeInk stores sessions and gateway keys on the user’s computer. For CodeInk Agent, prompts and terminal results are sent to the selected gateway. Those facts do not mean all agent data stays local: external agents manage their own sign-in and data handling, which are governed by those tools. Review the relevant agent and gateway policies before using sensitive project material.

What setup involves

The documented setup depends on whether you plan to use an external agent or CodeInk Agent. You need a supported agent installation and authentication, or a supported gateway key for the built-in agent.

  1. Install and authenticate the external agent you want to use, or obtain a key for Vercel AI Gateway or OpenRouter if you plan to use CodeInk Agent.
  2. Install CodeInk using the package for your operating system and release channel.
  3. Select a project folder in CodeInk.
  4. If using CodeInk Agent, configure your gateway key.
  5. Choose an agent and model, then work with its sessions and related project views.

For CodeInk Agent, the README says terminal commands require approval by default unless Full access is selected. External agents use their own permission settings, so do not assume CodeInk’s default approval behavior applies to them.

Platforms, release channels, and license

The README lists packages for macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel, Windows x64, and Linux x64 and ARM64. It documents separate Production and Early Access installs. Package availability and release-channel details can change, so check the current project release information before installing.

The project README describes current releases as GPL-3.0-or-later and says earlier releases were distributed under MIT. It also notes that the later license change does not retract permissions already granted for those earlier versions. If licensing affects your use or redistribution, confirm the license attached to the particular release you use.

Who is likely to benefit—and what remains unproven?

CodeInk is most relevant to developers who already work with more than one coding agent and want to inspect sessions, files, terminals, reviews, and agent activity from one desktop workspace. It is less compelling if you use only one agent and are already satisfied with that tool’s own project and session views.

The available product documentation describes features and setup, not comparative performance. It does not establish that CodeInk produces better code, saves a measured amount of time, or is more secure than other tools. Treat it as a workflow-consolidation option, and judge the fit by whether its supported integrations and project views match the way you work.
