Hyundai’s body-on-frame truck push did not begin with the Boulder Concept. The company announced plans for a North American midsize pickup in 2025; the Boulder, revealed in April 2026, is a design study that makes the plan more tangible. Hyundai says the architecture will underpin a production truck planned for the end of the decade, but has not announced a firm retail launch date or production specifications.

Why is Hyundai making a body-on-frame truck?

Hyundai describes body-on-frame vehicles and light commercial vehicles as market “white spaces” where it is underrepresented. At its 2026 CEO Investor Day, the company said those segments account for roughly 29 percent of automotive sales. That figure is Hyundai’s characterization of the opportunity, not an independently established market estimate.

The strategy is to move beyond the compact pickup category represented by the Santa Cruz and compete in the midsize segment with a different vehicle construction. Hyundai says it wants the future truck to address off-road capability, towing, hauling, and utility. Those are stated goals, not confirmed capabilities or ratings for a production vehicle.

Hyundai CEO José Muñoz said in the company’s April 1, 2026, Boulder announcement: “Body-on-frame vehicles are the backbone of American work and adventure, and we intend to compete in the midsize pickup segment with everything we have.” That is Hyundai’s stated rationale, rather than an independent assessment of the market or its competitors.

Is the Hyundai Boulder a real truck?

The Boulder is real as a Hyundai concept, but it is not the production pickup. Hyundai unveiled it at the New York International Auto Show on April 1, 2026, describing it as an SUV-shaped design study that previews a fully boxed body-on-frame architecture. The company says that architecture will underpin a production midsize pickup.

Hyundai included the truck in a company-wide plan to introduce 36 new vehicles in North America by 2030. That is a broad product figure, not a promise that all 36 are pickups or that the Boulder itself will reach production unchanged.

How does the plan differ from the Santa Cruz?

The Santa Cruz is Hyundai’s existing compact pickup in the United States, with unibody construction. The planned truck is a midsize pickup with body-on-frame construction. Hyundai has cited its experience and brand presence from the Santa Cruz, launched in 2021, as background for the new effort—but the two vehicles belong to different size and construction categories.

Hyundai’s announcement does not establish that Santa Cruz accessories will fit the future truck, nor does it announce a decision to discontinue the Santa Cruz. Treat claims about the Santa Cruz’s future as secondary reporting unless Hyundai confirms them.

When is Hyundai’s midsize pickup coming out?

Hyundai’s public timing statements point to the end of the decade, but they are not a retail on-sale date:

Hyundai source Timing language What it establishes
2025 CEO Investor Day “Before 2030” A plan to launch its first North American midsize pickup before 2030.
April 2026 global Boulder release “By 2030” The company’s stated timeframe for the production pickup associated with the concept.
Hyundai USA Boulder concept page 2029 A more specific year stated on the U.S. concept page; not a confirmed on-sale date.

These formulations are best read as a plan for the end of the decade. Hyundai has not established a production start month, retail launch date, or when customers will be able to order the truck.

What has Hyundai said about U.S. development and production?

Hyundai says future body-on-frame vehicles will be designed and developed for America and built in America using Hyundai U.S. steel. That signals a localization intention, but does not provide a complete account of the truck’s assembly site, component sourcing, or suppliers.

The company’s 2025 roadmap set a broader goal of producing more than 80 percent of vehicles sold in the United States domestically by 2030, while increasing local supply-chain content from 60 percent to 80 percent. Those are company-wide targets, not a truck-specific sourcing commitment.

What is still unknown about the production truck?

The concept announcement and investor materials do not establish the final design or the details buyers would need to evaluate a production pickup. Hyundai has not confirmed the truck’s powertrain, price, towing capacity, payload, production date, or retail launch date in the cited materials. The concept’s intended utility and off-road focus should not be treated as tested production performance.

Hyundai also has not published a directly comparable set of specifications against existing midsize pickups in these materials. A meaningful comparison will require production data for a specific model year and market, including construction, powertrain, payload and towing ratings, configurations, equipment, and availability.

Why the Boulder reveal can feel sudden

The reveal put a recognizable concept vehicle behind a strategy Hyundai had already announced. The company first set out its North American midsize-pickup plan at its 2025 CEO Investor Day; Boulder followed in 2026 as a visual preview of the intended architecture. The change is in how visible the plan has become, not evidence that Hyundai started pursuing the segment only when it showed the concept.
