A houseplant can sit beside a window and still stretch because it is not getting enough usable light to grow compactly. The window may be shaded or covered, the plant may be too far from it, or the species may need more light than that spot provides. Move it toward a brighter place suited to the plant, or add a grow light if daylight is insufficient. This can improve new growth; old stretched stems generally stay stretched.
Why a plant gets leggy beside a window
It may be receiving too little usable light
Plants often respond to inadequate light by stretching toward the source. UC ANR Integrated Pest Management identifies unusually long petioles—the stalks that attach leaves to stems—or long stem sections between leaves as signs usually caused by insufficient light. Minnesota Extension also lists thin, elongated stems and wider spaces between leaf nodes as low-light symptoms. Pale or slow growth and leaf drop can accompany the problem.
A window’s brightness does not tell you what reaches the leaves
Light decreases with distance, so a plant several feet back may receive much less than one near the glass. Window size and direction, curtains, insect screens, tinted glazing, outdoor shade, trees, buildings, and seasonal changes can all affect the light that reaches a plant. A room that looks bright to you may still be dim for it.
The reverse can also happen: a bright window may expose a shade-adapted plant to more direct sun than it can tolerate. Light needs vary by species, so no compass direction guarantees the right placement for every home. See UC ANR’s houseplant problem guidance, University of Maryland Extension’s lighting guide, and University of Illinois Extension’s indoor lighting advice.

Light is the leading cause, but not the only possible one
Excess fertilizer can also contribute to excessive, weak growth. If a plant looks especially lush but floppy, review its feeding routine rather than assuming it needs more fertilizer. Iowa State University Extension discusses both low light and excess fertilizer as possible contributors in its houseplant problem guide.
How to assess the light reaching your plant
- Check the plant’s position. Note how far it is from the glass and whether curtains, blinds, screens, or other obstacles block the light.
- Look outside the window. Trees, buildings, and overhangs may shade it, and the amount of daylight can change by season.
- Identify the plant’s needs. Compare the available spot with the light conditions the species requires; plants differ in how much light they need.
- Compare locations if you are unsure. A light meter or phone app can help compare spots, but neither is essential. You can try a brighter location and watch the new growth.
Iowa State Extension explains practical placement and optional light measurement in its houseplant care guide. North Carolina Cooperative Extension also explains how distance affects indoor light in its indoor-plant light considerations.

How to fix leggy growth
Move it to a brighter suitable spot
If a brighter location is available, move the plant closer to the window or to a better-lit window. Choose a spot that suits the species, rather than moving every plant into direct sun. If no window provides enough light for that plant, consider supplemental lighting, such as an indoor grow light for houseplants.

Increase exposure gradually
Do not move a plant abruptly from shade into strong direct sun. Increase its exposure in steps over roughly a week or two, watching for signs of leaf scorch. This is especially important for shade-adapted plants and tender foliage. University of Minnesota Extension recommends gradual transitions in its March 2, 2026, spring houseplant care guidance; the University of Maine Cooperative Extension also advises gradual acclimation in its guidance on water and light problems.

Rotate the pot for more even exposure
When light comes mainly from one direction, turn the pot periodically so different sides receive light. Rotation can reduce one-sided growth, but it does not make a dim location bright enough.
Do not expect old stems to shorten
Correcting the light conditions helps new growth develop more appropriately; it does not undo the length of stems that have already stretched. Pruning may improve the appearance or encourage fuller growth in some plants, but the right approach depends on the species and its growth habit. Iowa State Extension notes that prior spindly growth remains so after conditions improve, while Minnesota Extension’s pruning advice is part of its spring houseplant care guidance.

Move the plant or add a grow light?
| Option | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Move it closer to a window or to a brighter window | A suitable brighter location is available. | Account for the plant’s light needs and increase exposure gradually if the new spot is much sunnier. |
| Add a grow light | Available daylight is not enough for the plant. | Choose a light intended for plants and position it according to the manufacturer’s instructions and the growing area. |
A grow light is a practical fallback, not the first step if a suitable brighter window is available. Iowa State Extension describes supplemental lighting in its houseplant care guide, and Minnesota Extension covers it in its indoor plant lighting guide.
