Horror games use jumpscares, sound, and limited visibility for different but complementary effects: a sudden scare shocks, audio draws attention to a possible threat, and obscured sightlines leave players uncertain about what is nearby. Developers describe jumpscares as one part of a broader rhythm of anticipation and dread—not a universal formula for frightening every player.

Why jumpscares do more than startle

A jumpscare is a sudden visual or auditory event designed to provoke an immediate reaction. But developers also use one to shape pacing: a sharp scare can punctuate a quiet stretch, contrast with slower dread, or briefly release tension through a fake-out. The surrounding scene matters as much as the startling moment.

Dion Lay, lead writer on Alien: Isolation, described jumpscares as “one of the minor tools—more like a bit of spice you add to the main course” when used correctly. That reflects a design perspective, not a guarantee that every player will react the same way.

Scares can also work through anticipation. Frictional Games creative director Thomas Grip said that once players understand jumpscares are possible, they may begin expecting them, which can make later scenes feel more threatening even before anything appears. The possibility of a scare can become part of the tension.

How sound suggests danger

Sound can make a threat noticeable without revealing its source. A noise from outside the player’s view invites interpretation: it may indicate danger, movement, or something harmless. When the game withholds the explanation, the player must imagine what could have caused it.

In an interview about Darkwood, developer Gustaw Stachaszewski described the appeal of seeing or hearing objects move without knowing what caused the motion or sound. The game’s restricted field of view supports that uncertainty, but the underlying technique is broader: audio can deliver information while leaving its meaning unresolved.

Project Songbird - PlayStation 5
  • A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
  • A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
  • A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
  • The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
  • The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.

Researchers have also tested whether sound itself can shape fear. A preliminary 2010 experiment by Garner, Grimshaw, and Nabi reported that coarse manipulation of audio parameters had potential to influence fear intensity during survival-horror play. The authors presented this as an early result pointing toward further investigation, not proof of a general effect across games or players. Read the 2010 Audio Mostly paper.

A 2025 IEEE conference-paper abstract reports that simultaneous audio and visual cues produced the strongest physical reactions in its experiment, especially when a scare was unexpected and loud sound broke the tension. Because the accessible record is an abstract, it does not establish a general rule or provide enough detail to characterize the methods or sample. See the IEEE record.

Cronos - PlayStation 5
  • Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
  • Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
  • The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
  • The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
  • This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.

Why limited visibility makes players fill in the blanks

When a game limits what players can see, they have less information to confirm or rule out a threat. A dim corner, a narrow field of view, or an obscured route can turn an ordinary sound or movement into a question: what is there, and what will happen if I look?

Darkwood offers a specific example. Its field of view keeps peripheral space unclear, so players must turn to inspect other directions. Stachaszewski said experimentation with the field of view revealed an eerie appeal in seeing or hearing movement without knowing its cause. He also described the goal as horror that stimulates imagination and lets players fill in the blanks. That is one developer’s account of a design approach, not evidence that darkness works equally well for every game or audience. Read the Game Developer interview about Darkwood.

Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

How the techniques work together

These methods can reinforce one another. Limited visibility withholds visual confirmation; sound hints that something may be present; a sudden reveal can then deliver a shock. Alternatively, a game can use an unexplained noise or a restricted view to sustain uncertainty without resolving it in a jumpscare.

Design choice What it emphasizes What the player may experience
Jumpscare Immediate shock and changes in pacing A sudden reaction, or anticipation of another scare
Sound cue Attention and possible danger without a visible source Uncertainty about what made the noise
Limited visibility Withheld visual information Imagination filling in what cannot be seen
Paired audio and visual cues A coordinated reveal or scare A potentially stronger physical reaction, as reported in the 2025 abstract

There is no established ranking that makes one choice the best. A sudden reveal favors immediacy; an ambiguous cue favors uncertainty; a longer quiet stretch can make either one feel different when it arrives. The right choice depends on the scene, the player’s attention, and how the rest of the game uses tension.

What the studies can—and cannot—tell us

Experimental findings offer clues about particular conditions, not a universal recipe for horror design.

  • Jump scares and workload: A 2023 between-subject experiment with 60 participants varied mental workload using tasks of different difficulty. The researchers found a significant linear relationship between workload and physiological arousal from a jumpscare, but not the same relationship for participants’ subjective reports of arousal. A bodily response and a person’s reported feeling are different measures. Read the 2023 ACM study.
  • Sound parameters: The 2010 study described the potential of coarse audio manipulation, while emphasizing the preliminary nature of the experiment.
  • Combined cues: The 2025 abstract reports a result about physical reactions in its experiment; the abstract alone does not establish how broadly that finding applies.

These sources do not provide a broad survey of player preferences, a universal effect size, or a definitive comparison of jumpscares, sound, and limited visibility. Developer interviews explain intent; the studies measure specific responses under specific conditions. Neither establishes that one technique will work for every player.
