If HomePod audio echoes or seems late when you use Apple TV 4K, first check which speakers are playing, then run Apple’s Wireless Audio Sync calibration. It is designed for a specific case: Apple TV 4K sends sound to both wired TV or receiver speakers and a wireless speaker, and the two outputs are out of time. It is not a guaranteed fix for every lip-sync problem.
First, identify where the delay is coming from
“Out of sync” can mean two different things: HomePod sounds late compared with the picture, or HomePod and the TV/receiver speakers sound different from each other. Apple’s documented Wireless Audio Sync procedure addresses the second situation: latency between wired speakers and a wireless speaker. If you hear an echo, check whether both sets of speakers are active.
The route also matters. If you are watching an Apple TV app, Apple TV 4K is the source. If the sound comes from a console, player, or other device plugged into the TV, the audio must return from the TV to Apple TV 4K over ARC or eARC for HomePod playback. These paths have different settings.

On Apple TV 4K, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output and select HomePod or the stereo pair under Default Audio Output. You can also set the default output in the Home app. Apple specifies that Apple TV and the HomePod or AirPlay speakers be assigned to the same Home app room and connected to the same network. 2. Run Wireless Audio Sync for echo-like delay
- On Apple TV 4K, go to Settings > Video and Audio > Calibration > Wireless Audio Sync.
- Follow the on-screen instructions using an iPhone, and keep the iPhone close to the TV or receiver speakers during measurement.
- Let the calibration complete, then check the same program and speaker setup that showed the delay.
Apple TV plays tones through the wired speakers to measure the TV’s audio/visual latency, then matches output for the wireless speakers. This is Apple’s named calibration for the documented wired-and-wireless echo scenario; Apple does not say it corrects every app-specific delay, TV processing problem, or mismatch between sound and picture. Details are in Apple Support’s Apple TV 4K calibration guide.
3. If another device is plugged into the TV, check ARC or eARC
For audio from a TV-connected device to play through HomePod, Apple documents a return-audio setup using Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), a TV that supports ARC or eARC, and HomePod selected as the default output. On Apple TV, go to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output > Audio Return Channel and choose Play Television Audio.

For Apple’s eARC setup, connect an eARC-compatible HDMI cable between Apple TV 4K and the TV’s eARC-labeled HDMI port. The cable is sold separately. The TV may also require ARC, eARC, or HDMI-CEC to be enabled; consult the TV maker’s instructions. If return audio is not working, unplug and reconnect the HDMI cables and verify that they are in the intended ports. These checks address the return-audio route; they are not a substitute for Wireless Audio Sync calibration. See Apple’s ARC/eARC setup instructions and its Apple TV 4K audio-output guide.

4. Check what your HomePod model can play
A format limitation can change how surround sound is rendered, but Apple does not identify it as a cause of synchronization delay. Apple documents Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital 7.1, and Dolby Digital 5.1 support for a HomePod stereo pair with Apple TV 4K. HomePod mini does not support Dolby Atmos 5.1 or 7.1 surround; those formats are rendered in mono or stereo instead. Check Apple’s Apple TV 4K guide and HomePod guide to using HomePod with Apple TV 4K for supported setups.

5. Treat placement as a sound-quality adjustment
Apple recommends placing a single HomePod within 10 inches (25 centimeters) of a wall and near the center of the TV. For a stereo pair, place the speakers on either side of the TV, about 4 feet (1.2 meters) apart. These are placement recommendations for sound quality, not a documented timing fix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the picture still does not match the sound
If the delay remains after calibration, or occurs only in one app or with one TV-connected source, the Apple documentation does not establish a universal cause or guaranteed remedy. Note the source device, app, TV model, whether wired speakers are also playing, and whether the sound is late relative to the picture or only relative to another speaker. That distinction helps identify whether to investigate the source/app, TV audio processing, or ARC/eARC routing rather than repeatedly changing HomePod placement.
