A Rock Paper Shotgun opinion piece argues that Hellraiser: Revival feels most awkward when its lurid cult violence sits beside a comparatively recognizable BDSM club. The contrast, the author suggests, makes the game’s grand, grotesque horror feel less disturbing and more contrived. That is a reading of the game’s tone and mechanics—not an expert assessment of BDSM representation or a consensus verdict.
What the critique is about
The piece follows the game’s story of Aidan trying to rescue Sunny after becoming entangled with the Cenobites and a puzzlebox. Its argument is not simply that Hellraiser: Revival includes sexual imagery. It is that the game reportedly presents two kinds of dark material differently: cult violence as elaborate, theatrical horror, and a BDSM club as a place with details that feel more ordinary and socially legible.

As the author describes it, the early game establishes a violent cult dungeon through body-horror imagery, the Scarlet Church’s lore, crafting tutorials, weapon degradation, and stealth. The essay finds this material familiar in the way it combines horror-game violence with elevated, portentous language.
#1 Best Overall
The club scene reportedly feels more grounded by comparison: it includes safe-sex signage, a recovery room, patrons chatting, people in restraints, and visual distinctions between consensual fetish activity and the cult’s violence. Those details make the setting read less like an abstract underworld and more like a recognizable social space. The author’s point is about that contrast in presentation—not a claim that the scene offers a definitive or comprehensive portrayal of BDSM.
How a shared control input sharpens the criticism
The most specific part of the argument is about interaction rather than scenery. The article reports that Aidan obtains a paddle, a spreader bar, and a dildo for a task, then uses the right trigger to spank a patron. The author notes that the same input is associated with attacks elsewhere in the game.
That overlap, in the author’s interpretation, collapses a distinction the scene might otherwise establish. A recognizable consensual setting is made to share the game’s basic language of hitting, so the surrounding combat can seem more juvenile and artificial beside it. This is the article’s reported description and reading of the scene, not a claim based on independent gameplay testing.

What the author does—and does not—claim
The author explicitly limits their authority: “Not being much of a kinkster, I’m the wrong writer to assess how Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival portrays BDSM.” That caveat is important. The essay’s strongest case is a critical comparison of tone, imagery, and controller mechanics; it does not establish whether the game is accurate, responsible, or representative in its treatment of BDSM.

There is also creator context, though it does not settle the critique. In a Pocket Tactics interview, narrative director de Fault described the subject matter this way: “People do deal with this stuff, but we don’t make art about it really. Especially not games; we certainly don’t make games about it.” The remark situates the game’s difficult themes, but authorial intent and a player’s experience are different questions. “Embarrassing” is the opinion piece’s deliberately sharp judgment, not a factual finding about the game or a general critical consensus. Its logic is that the more recognizable club setting exposes the theatricality of the surrounding violence: when the game makes one environment feel socially concrete, its other horrors may look more like familiar genre conventions dressed in grand language.

Whether that contrast works for a player depends on what they expect from Hellraiser: Revival. Someone drawn to exaggerated body horror may see the club as another jarring element in the game’s world; someone persuaded by the essay may find that its grounded details make the game’s cult violence and combat controls feel less convincing.
