A heat wave can keep nights unusually warm because buildings, pavement, and the air around them hold onto daytime heat. When the bedroom cannot cool down, the body gets less relief and falling asleep may take longer. Keep heat out during the day, bring in cooler outdoor air at night only when it is safe, and use air conditioning or a cooler place if the room remains dangerously hot.
Why does a heat wave stay hot after sunset?
A heat wave is not just a run of hot afternoons. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes heatwaves as periods when excess heat accumulates through a sequence of unusually hot days and nights. After several hot days, buildings and paved surfaces can retain heat, while warm outdoor air offers little cooling when it comes time to sleep. The body, too, gets less respite between hot days. WHO warns that extended high temperatures by day and night create cumulative stress on the body: WHO: Climate change, heat and health.
Why cities can feel hotter overnight
Roads, sidewalks, and buildings absorb and retain solar heat. Cities often have fewer trees and other natural features, and building layouts can restrict cooling airflow. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that U.S. urban areas are about 1–7°F warmer by day and 2–5°F warmer at night than outlying areas. Those figures describe U.S. comparisons, not a prediction for every neighborhood or city elsewhere: EPA: Learn about heat islands.
How does nighttime heat affect sleep?
Hotter nights are associated with shorter sleep in population research, especially because people take longer to fall asleep. A 2020 study by Kelton Minor, Andreas Bjerre-Nielsen, Sigga Svala Jonasdottir, Sune Lehmann, and Nick Obradovich analyzed more than 7 million nighttime sleep records from 68 countries alongside local weather data from 2015–2017. The authors reported that rising nighttime temperatures shortened sleep primarily through delayed sleep onset, with larger effects among older adults and residents of lower-income countries. This is an observational population finding, not a guarantee about how any one person will sleep: Ambient heat and human sleep.

How to make a bedroom cooler before bedtime
1. Block heat from entering during the day
When outdoor air is hotter than indoor air, keep windows closed. Cover windows that receive direct morning or afternoon sun. The EPA notes that outdoor awnings and louvers can block more incoming heat than indoor shades; sun-blocking shades or blinds can still help limit direct sun: EPA: Learn about heat islands.
2. Open windows only when outdoor air is cooler and safe
After dark, compare the outdoor and indoor conditions. Open windows if outdoor air is cooler than the room and ventilation is safe and appropriate; close them if it is still hotter outside. Consider local outdoor air quality, as well as practical concerns such as security, before bringing outside air in. Guidance on home cooling from WHO and the EPA supports timing ventilation to conditions rather than leaving windows open by default.

3. Choose active cooling if the room stays too hot
Air conditioning directly lowers indoor air temperature; a fan does not. If you cannot keep your home cool, WHO advises moving to the coolest room and spending time in an air-conditioned public building. The EPA also recommends planning where to go if you do not have air conditioning. Check local public-health or municipal information for nearby cool places, since locations and availability vary: WHO home-cooling guidance; EPA heat-island guidance.
WHO gives indoor targets of below 32°C during the day and 24°C at night, especially for infants, adults over 60, and people with chronic conditions. These are WHO recommendations, not a universal sleep prescription: WHO home-cooling guidance.

Can a fan help you sleep in a heat wave?
A fan moves air across the skin and may help sweat evaporate, improving comfort, but it does not cool the room air. Official thresholds differ, so follow the relevant local health authority rather than treating any one cutoff as universal:
| Authority | Fan guidance |
|---|---|
| U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) | Use indoor fans only below 90°F: CDC heat prevention. |
| U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) | Do not use an electric fan in a closed room or when the temperature is in the mid-90s °F or higher: EPA heat-island guidance. |
| World Health Organization (WHO) | Use electric fans only below 40°C; fans may not prevent heat-related illness when temperatures exceed 35°C: WHO home-cooling guidance. |
When a room is dangerously hot, do not rely on a bedside fan as a substitute for air conditioning or getting to a cooler place.

What can you do to cool your body for sleep?
- Choose light, loose clothing and light bed linens.
- Take a cool shower or bath before bed.
- Use a damp cloth, spray, or light wet clothing to help cool your skin.
- Drink fluids regularly. Needs vary, particularly for people with medical conditions, so follow any clinician’s fluid guidance rather than adopting a generic target.
These measures are recommended by the WHO. They can support comfort but do not make an unsafe room temperature safe.
When is heat a health emergency?
Heat illness can affect anyone, but infants and young children, adults 65 and older, pregnant people, and people with heart or other chronic conditions may be at higher risk. Outdoor workers and people exercising in heat are also exposed to added risk. Watch for heavy sweating, muscle cramps, shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, weakness, or nausea; the CDC lists these among heat-illness symptoms: CDC: About heat and your health.

If heatstroke is suspected, seek emergency medical help immediately and begin active cooling while waiting for help, following local emergency guidance. WHO identifies heatstroke as a condition requiring immediate emergency medical care: WHO heat-health guidance.
