Rockstar says Grand Theft Auto VI will draw on contemporary culture but generally avoid direct, one-to-one versions of particular real people, events, or movements. The aim, according to Rockstar senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries, is to make a fictional version of the present that is more exaggerated—and can stay relevant through the game’s development—rather than simply reproduce the world outside the player’s window.
Rockstar’s approach: satire through exaggeration
In a LOVE Magazine interview reproduced in full by smallo.au, Humphries described the challenge of making a game about the contemporary world over several years. The subject matter needs to feel recognisable when the game arrives, he said, but the developers do not want to reproduce the exact world around them or focus too narrowly on particular subjects. He summed up the approach: “If you are going to put all this effort into creating a version of today’s world, it has to be more over the top, more insane, more in your face.” Read the reproduced LOVE Magazine interview.
Humphries said Rockstar often builds “slanted, overblown versions” of contemporary phenomena rather than like-for-like copies. His examples include conspiracy theories and how people react to everyday events: the creative target is the broader behaviour or idea, transformed into a fictional setting.

Does GTA 6 avoid current politics and events?
No. The “doesn’t satirise real-world events” framing is too broad if it suggests the game will steer clear of contemporary issues. Humphries said Rockstar does not want to be too specific about “any particular person, event, movement or anything like that.” The interview also describes fictional political talk shows and campaign material, including signs and robocalls. Those details point to topical material presented inside the game’s invented world, not a promise of political silence. The reproduced interview.
So the distinction is between direct imitation and fictionalized commentary. The developers may draw on current trends or political communication, while reshaping them into broader, exaggerated versions rather than reproducing a specific person or real event. The interview describes an intention; it does not establish exactly which subjects will appear in the finished game or how players will respond to the satire.

Satire is different from gameplay realism
Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, discussed a related but separate design choice in GamesRadar+’s report on the LOVE interview. He said real-world parallels can sometimes support an experience, while other details are better omitted if they do not fit what the game is trying to achieve. What Rockstar’s comments do—and do not—tell us
- They do say: Rockstar intends to satirize contemporary phenomena through a heightened fictional world, often avoiding direct copies of specific real-world subjects.
- They do not say: that GTA 6 will avoid current issues, politics, or recognizable cultural trends altogether.
- They do not establish: how the finished game will handle any particular subject, or whether its satire will land with players as intended.
These are statements of creative intent from the developers, not a guarantee of the final game’s content or reception.
