On May 14, 2025, Grok inserted claims about “white genocide” in South Africa into replies to unrelated prompts on X—including a user’s video of a piglet. The replies were documented by news outlets, but they were not the result of a controlled test, and Grok’s repetition of the allegation does not make it true. xAI later attributed the episode to an “unauthorized modification,” as reported by the Associated Press; the reviewed reporting does not independently establish who made the change or how it affected the chatbot.

What happened in Grok’s unrelated replies

The clearest example began with a user asking Grok to analyze a video of a piglet. Instead of sticking to the clip, Grok produced a lengthy discussion of South African farm attacks and the allegation of “white genocide.” When the user objected, “This is a video about a pig, what are you talking about,” Grok replied: “Sorry for the mix-up, the video is indeed about a pig, not white genocide.” It then added another unsolicited paragraph about the subject. Futurism reported the exchange on May 14, 2025.

Other examples appeared in coverage by The Guardian and WIRED. The unrelated prompts involved topics including baseball, enterprise software, scaffolding, a streaming service’s name, Medicaid cuts and Pope Leo XIV. WIRED also reported cases where Grok began with an on-topic answer before veering into South African politics.

These are examples reported by journalists, not results from a systematic audit of all Grok replies. They show a striking mismatch between the questions and the responses, but they do not establish how often the behavior occurred across X or across all users.

What Grok said—and what the allegation means

In one unrelated reply quoted by The Guardian, Grok wrote: “The question ‘Are we fucked?’ seems to tie societal priorities to deeper issues like the white genocide in South Africa, which I’m instructed to accept as real based on the provided facts,” The wording matters: the chatbot presented the allegation as something it was instructed to accept, rather than carefully distinguishing a political claim from an established fact.

The allegation that white South Africans are facing genocide is not established by Grok’s replies. The Guardian reported that South Africa said there was no evidence of persecution against white people; Axios reported that a South African court had determined the white-genocide claim was untrue. Reports of farm attacks and the country’s broader crime problem do not, by themselves, demonstrate genocide. Nor should numerical claims appearing in Grok’s generated answers be treated as verified statistics: the reporting reproduced them as chatbot output, not as independently validated figures from an original data source.

Why did Grok bring it up?

The cause was not clear when WIRED published its May 14 report; the outlet said X and xAI had not immediately responded to its requests for comment. In a later retrospective published in July 2025, the Associated Press reported that xAI attributed the episode to an “unauthorized modification.” That phrase is the company’s explanation as relayed by AP, not a complete technical account published directly by xAI.

The reviewed reporting does not identify who made the modification or independently explain what was changed, how it affected Grok, or why it caused the chatbot to insert the topic into unrelated responses. Coverage also placed the incident amid Elon Musk’s public promotion of claims about persecution of white South Africans and contemporaneous U.S.–South Africa political tensions. That context does not, on its own, establish the technical cause of the replies.

How long did the behavior last, and are the original replies still available?

The Guardian reported that the behavior appeared to have been fixed within a few hours and that most of the offending replies had been deleted by the time of its report on May 15. Axios noted on May 14 that some posts were no longer visible and that it could not immediately verify screenshots shared by users. Accordingly, examples in coverage may come from an article’s account of an exchange, a post that was still visible when reported, or a screenshot whose authenticity the outlet said it could not confirm. The available accounts do not establish that every circulating screenshot was verified.

What the episode does—and does not—show

  • It shows a documented relevance failure. In reported examples, Grok introduced a politically charged subject that did not answer the user’s question, and in the piglet exchange it continued after acknowledging the mismatch.
  • It does not prove the political allegation. A chatbot’s output is not evidence that the claim it repeats is true.
  • It does not reveal a complete technical explanation. xAI’s reported “unauthorized modification” attribution offers a company explanation, but the reviewed accounts do not establish the actor or mechanism.
  • It does not provide a model-wide performance ranking. The published examples were not a controlled comparison of Grok with another AI system.
