If a website shortcut now shows the Microsoft Edge logo, that does not by itself mean Chrome was removed or that your Google account or search engine changed. The icon can reflect the browser associated with the shortcut. Check which browser opens it, then review Windows’ default-browser setting or recreate the shortcut from Chrome.
First check whether the shortcut only looks different
Double-click the shortcut and note which browser opens the site. An Edge logo and an Edge launch are related clues, but they are separate symptoms: the icon alone cannot identify the browser that will open the shortcut or explain why its appearance changed.
Microsoft Q&A responses describe internet shortcuts showing the icon of the browser associated with them. One volunteer moderator wrote that when Edge is the default browser, internet shortcuts would be expected to show the Edge icon. That is community-support guidance, not a formal specification covering every shortcut type or Windows configuration. Read the Microsoft Q&A discussion.
Check Windows’ default browser
If the shortcut opens in Edge and you want links to open in another browser, set that browser as the default in Windows. The menu path depends on your Windows version. Microsoft notes that Settings can vary by version. See Microsoft’s default-browser instructions.

Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Default apps.
- Search for the browser you want to use.
- Select it, then choose Set default.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Under Web browser, select the current browser.
- Choose the browser you want to use.
After changing the default, test the shortcut again. The setting controls which browser Windows uses by default; it does not establish that every existing shortcut’s icon will immediately change.
Recreate the website shortcut from Chrome
If you want a shortcut created from Chrome, open the website there and use Chrome’s documented shortcut workflow. Google does not promise that this will restore a particular icon on every Windows setup. See Google Chrome Help.

- Open the website in Chrome.
- Select More (the three-dot menu).
- Select Cast, save and share > Create shortcut.
- Enter a name if you want to change the suggested one, then select Create.
If the icon or browser behavior is still unexpected
The exact cause cannot be determined from the icon alone. The shortcut’s type and the application that opens it matter; a community post reporting that newly made Google shortcuts showed an Edge logo is an example of the symptom, not proof of a universal cause or fix. See the ElevenForum report.

- Note your Windows version and whether the shortcut is a Chrome-created website shortcut or another kind of internet shortcut.
- Record which browser opens the shortcut when you double-click it.
- If you need more specific repair steps, provide those details rather than changing registry settings or installing cleanup tools as a first response.
