Google Wallet can use background location to show where your saved payment and loyalty cards can be used. That convenience feature is only one part of Google’s disclosed location processing: the company also describes location use for security and compliance when adding cards, and says location may appear in receipts depending on your account settings. Google documents separate controls for Location History and Wallet activity, and neither should be treated as a master switch for every location-related use.
Why does Google Wallet use your location?
Google says background location information from a mobile device can help Wallet notify you where saved payment and loyalty cards can be used. This is intended to make card information useful near places where you might use it; the documentation does not establish that Wallet continuously maps every movement or that nearby-card suggestions are its only reason for processing location.
Google also says location can be used for fraud prevention, security, and compliance when you add a new payment or transit card. Depending on your Google Account settings, location may also be included in receipt details. These are distinct disclosed uses, so turning off a convenience-oriented history setting should not be assumed to disable all location processing.
Google’s privacy help says Google Pay does not sell transaction history to other companies. It also notes that participation in another program may involve information sharing, even if you opt out of the personalization setting described on that page. Google’s explanation of how Google Pay keeps information private provides the relevant qualifications.

Which settings control Wallet location and activity?
Google describes two different control families. Google Account Activity controls govern when Google Pay or Wallet collects Location History; Wallet history controls cover activity saved from Wallet and payments services, such as transit-pass taps. They are not interchangeable, and Google does not describe either one as disabling every location-related use.

Google describes the distinction and regional rollout on its Wallet data and privacy help page. If the newer Wallet history option is missing, that does not mean the Location History controls are the same setting or that the newer controls are available in your account.

How to manage Google Pay or Wallet Location History
- Open your Google Account’s Activity controls.
- Find the Location History control and review whether it is on or off.
- Change the setting to your preference. Google says you can control when Google Pay or Google Wallet collects Location History at any time.
Google’s instructions are on its page for finding, exporting, or deleting Google Pay and Google Wallet information. Menu labels and available options can vary with account and rollout status; use that official page if the controls are not where you expect.

Where to find Wallet transactions, export data, or delete it
Google says transaction information may be available in the Wallet app and, in eligible markets, on the Wallet website. Other Google Pay transactions may instead be available through Google Account activity or payments.google.com. The available location depends on the kind of transaction and market, so not finding a transaction in one Wallet view does not establish that no record exists.

The same Google help page documents routes to export or delete Google Pay and Wallet information. Deletion is not necessarily immediate or comprehensive: Google warns that some data may remain where required for business or legal reasons or to provide essential services.
