Most unexpected words come from the active keyboard, not Google Translate. Translate converts the text you enter; Gboard (or another installed keyboard) supplies predictive words, autocorrections and learned suggestions. The fix depends on where the suggestion appears: the Android Translate app, Translate on the web, Gboard’s Translate tool, or Gboard on an iPhone or iPad. Identify that surface first, then change the keyboard language and suggestion settings that actually control it.
First, identify which kind of “suggestion” you are seeing
The word suggestion can describe several different features. A row of candidate words above the keys is normally produced by the keyboard. A translated sentence appearing in a second language is produced by a translation feature. A virtual keyboard inside the desktop Translate page is an input method, not the prediction strip on your phone.
| What you see | Where it appears | Likely controller | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Candidate words above the keys while you type | Any ordinary text field, including Translate | Gboard or another installed keyboard | Active keyboard language, layout and Text correction settings |
| Text changes into another language while you compose it | After opening a translation tool in another app | Gboard’s Translate-as-you-type tool | Whether the Translate tool was deliberately opened, plus its source and target languages |
| A language-specific keyboard button in the Translate text box | Translate website on a computer | Translate’s virtual keyboard | Selected source language and the keyboard menu at the lower left of the text box |
| Handwriting canvas or a Handwrite option | Translate Android app | Translate input mode | Use the Keyboard button to return to the normal keyboard; handwriting may be unavailable for some languages |
Do not assume that changing the phone’s display language will fix a prediction problem. Gboard’s language list is separate from Android’s interface language, and Translate’s source language is not proof that it is learning your everyday typing.
A useful first test is to type the same short word in a neutral app such as a notes field, then type it in Translate. If the same candidate appears in both places, the keyboard is the leading suspect. If it appears only after a Translate control is opened, inspect that input mode before deleting any learned words. Also note whether the word is merely offered, inserted automatically, or displayed as translated output; those are different behaviors and can have different switches.

How keyboard predictions and Translate interact
Gboard prediction is a separate layer
Gboard can show next-word predictions, spelling corrections and words it has learned from your use. Those controls remain with Gboard even when the text field belongs to Google Translate. If the same odd word appears in Messages, a browser search box and Translate, investigate Gboard first.
The keyboard may use a different layout or language from the language shown by Android’s menus. A phone set to English can still have a Spanish, French or multilingual Gboard layout active. Conversely, selecting a Translate source language does not automatically prove that Gboard switched languages. Look at the language indicator on the keyboard itself while the cursor is in the source box.
Gboard’s Translate tool is different from prediction
Gboard includes a Translate tool that converts text while you type in another app. This is an intentional translation workflow, not ordinary next-word prediction. If the text changes language as you compose it, close that tool and return to the standard keyboard before changing prediction settings.
Because the tool is launched from Gboard, it can be mistaken for a Translate app setting. Check whether a translation panel or source-and-target language controls are visible above the keys. If so, exit that panel and enter text normally. A prediction strip should offer candidates in the active keyboard language; it should not replace every character with a translated sentence unless a translation feature is active.
Translate has its own input modes
The computer website can display a virtual keyboard for the selected source language. In the Android app, Translate can accept handwriting. Neither feature establishes that Translate controls Gboard’s learned words or prediction strip. Treat each input surface independently.
Changing from handwriting to the keyboard changes how characters are entered, not the account’s translation quality or the keyboard’s stored vocabulary. Likewise, selecting a website virtual keyboard changes the available characters for that source language; it does not alter the physical keyboard or phone keyboard used elsewhere.
Fix unexpected suggestions on Android with Gboard
These paths use Google’s current Gboard labels. Wording and placement can vary by Android and Gboard version, so follow the closest label shown on your device. If you use a different keyboard, such as a manufacturer keyboard or another third-party app, its menus and learned-word controls will be different.

- Open any text field, including the Translate app’s source box, so Gboard is visible.
- Look for the language indicator on the keyboard. If several languages are enabled, the current one may not be the language you expected.
- To add or adjust a language, open Gboard Settings → Languages → Add keyboard, choose the language, and select the required layout.
- To switch while typing, touch and hold the space bar. On devices that show it, you can also tap the language key.
Adding a Gboard language does not change Android’s display language. During diagnosis, keep only one or two active keyboard languages if possible. A large active set makes automatic language selection and predictions harder to interpret.
Check the layout as well as the language. A QWERTY, AZERTY, or other regional layout can make a correct keypress look like a wrong suggestion. If you use more than one layout for the same language, temporarily leave only the layout you recognize, reproduce the problem, and then restore the others if needed.

After switching languages, dismiss and reopen the Translate source field. This gives the app a fresh text field and makes it easier to tell whether the candidate row changed because of the language switch. Do not change several languages at once and then assume the last change caused the result.
2. Review prediction and correction controls
- Open Gboard Settings → Text correction.
- Check whether Show suggestion strip is enabled. When enabled, the strip displays predictive text and word suggestions.
- Review the individual suggestion options that your version lists. Labels differ across releases, so use the controls actually present rather than looking for an exact screenshot.
- If words are being changed without your approval, review Smart Compose and Auto-capitalization. Turn off the specific behavior you do not want, then test in the same Translate field.
Disabling the suggestion strip hides the candidate row; it does not change the keyboard language. Conversely, changing the language will not erase a learned word. Make one change at a time so you can tell which control affected the result.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDistinguish an offered word from an automatic correction. An offered word remains in the strip until you tap it, while an automatic correction can replace what you typed when you add a space or punctuation. If only replacements are a problem, review correction-related options rather than turning off every suggestion. If the strip itself is distracting, hiding it is a narrower change than clearing all keyboard data.
3. Remove one bad suggestion or erase learned words
For a single unwanted candidate, touch and hold the word in the suggestion strip and drag it to Trash. This is useful when one name, spelling or language-specific form keeps returning.
To remove the keyboard’s broader personalization, open Gboard Settings → Dictionary → Delete learned words and confirm. Deleting learned words removes the entries Gboard has stored for personalization, so useful names and terms may disappear as well. It does not change the Android display language or Translate’s language pair.
Use the one-word removal gesture first when the problem is limited to a single candidate. Use Delete learned words only when unwanted entries are widespread or you deliberately want to start personalization again. After a full deletion, the keyboard may need time and normal typing before it offers your preferred names and technical terms again.

Try reversible checks before resetting the keyboard:
- Restart the device and reproduce the issue in the same app.
- Open Google Play, find Gboard, and install any available update.
- If the behavior remains, open Android’s app settings for Gboard and clear its cache.
- Force-stop Gboard, reopen a text field and test again.
- As a last resort, clear Gboard’s storage or data. This resets Gboard to its default state, including preferences and personalization.
- If necessary, reinstall Gboard. Before uninstalling, make sure another keyboard is enabled so you are not left without an input method.
Clearing data and reinstalling can remove custom layouts, settings and learned entries. They are recovery steps, not proof that Translate caused the problem. If the suggestion is wrong only in Translate but correct everywhere else, record that distinction before performing a reset.
Retest after each step using the same example phrase. If an update fixes the behavior, note the Gboard version. If clearing the cache has no effect but clearing data does, expect to configure languages, layouts and preferences again. Do not clear data simply because the Translate app has a different source language; the two applications have separate settings.

5. Report a problem that survives the checks
Google’s Gboard help describes sending a quality bug report from the keyboard’s suggestion strip and submitting feedback through Gboard settings. Include enough detail for the behavior to be reproduced:
Recommended Free Tools
- Phone or tablet model
- Android version
- Gboard version
- Active keyboard language and layout
- The exact unexpected suggestion, including what you typed
- Whether it occurs only in Translate or in other apps as well
This information distinguishes a language-selection problem from a keyboard-wide prediction issue and from a Translate-specific input-mode problem. A short screen recording or screenshot can also show whether the word was offered in the strip, inserted automatically, or generated by a translation panel, provided it does not expose passwords or private conversations.
When the problem is on the Translate website
On a computer, Translate can provide a virtual keyboard for a selected source language. That keyboard is independent of the prediction strip on a phone.
- Open Translate in a desktop browser and choose the source language.
- Click the keyboard menu at the lower left of the source text box.
- Select the keyboard for the source language.
- Enter characters with the on-screen keys and check that the source-language layout matches what you intended.
The virtual keyboard is useful when a physical keyboard lacks characters or a layout needed for the source language. It does not install a keyboard on the computer and does not change the operating system’s input language. Close or change it from the same menu when you return to ordinary physical-keyboard entry.
If you are instead typing with a physical keyboard and seeing browser or operating-system word completions, those suggestions are controlled by the computer’s input tools, not by the virtual-keyboard menu in Translate. Use the computer’s own language and input settings for that behavior.
Do not apply Android Gboard steps to this desktop interface. There is no phone suggestion strip to drag to Trash, and clearing a mobile keyboard’s data cannot change a browser’s input method. First confirm that the unexpected characters are coming from the on-screen Translate keyboard rather than an extension, operating-system input source, or browser feature.
When the Android Translate app is showing handwriting
The Android app has a different input interface from the website. To use it, choose the source and target languages, tap the source text box, and select Handwrite. Write in the canvas rather than typing on Gboard.
To return to normal typing, tap the Keyboard button. If the Handwrite button is greyed out, Google says handwriting is unavailable for that language. That limitation does not indicate that Gboard’s prediction database is damaged; select a supported input method or use the regular keyboard instead.
Handwriting recognition can produce characters that look like keyboard mistakes, especially when a stroke is interpreted as a different letter. Compare the recognized source text before judging the translation. If the recognized text is correct but the candidate strip is unexpected after returning to typing, switch back to the Gboard checks rather than repeatedly changing Translate’s language pair.

iPhone and iPad: use the iOS-specific Gboard controls
Gboard’s iPhone and iPad settings are not the same as Android’s. In a text field, touch and hold the Globe key, then choose Settings → Keyboard settings. Select the suggestion types offered there.
Google notes that suggestions depend on supported languages. Do not apply Android instructions such as dragging a candidate to Trash or opening Android’s Dictionary page unless the iOS version explicitly provides an equivalent control. If the issue occurs only in the Translate app, compare it with a normal iOS text field to determine whether the keyboard or the app is responsible.
Keep the platform distinction in mind when asking for help. Report the iPhone or iPad model, iOS or iPadOS version, Gboard version, active language and the exact text that produced the unexpected candidate. A setting path copied from an Android tutorial may simply not exist on iOS.
A quick decision path
- The candidate row is wrong in several apps: check Gboard’s active language, Text correction and learned words.
- The row is wrong only after changing a Translate source language: verify the Gboard language and layout; do not change Android’s display language as a first step.
- Text is being translated as you type: check whether Gboard’s Translate tool is open and exit it if you want ordinary predictions.
- You are on a computer and using an on-screen keyboard: select the correct source-language keyboard from Translate’s lower-left keyboard menu.
- You see handwriting in the Android app: tap Keyboard to return to typing; a grey Handwrite control means that language is unsupported for handwriting.
- The issue persists after language and setting checks: restart, update Gboard, clear its cache, and reserve data clearing or reinstallation for last.
When comparing results, use the same source sentence, source language, target language and input surface. Changing all four at once makes the result impossible to attribute. A two-minute comparison in a notes field and in Translate often shows whether the keyboard or the translation interface owns the behavior.

What Google says about saved words and privacy
Google’s Gboard troubleshooting guidance states: “Saved words aren’t sent. You can delete saved words at any time.” The same guidance says searches are sent to Google to obtain results and usage statistics are sent to improve the product; it says ordinary text typed, such as passwords or chats, is not sent. These are Google’s stated policy descriptions, not an independent privacy audit.
Deleting learned words removes the personalization data stored by the keyboard, which is why it can stop a persistent unwanted candidate but also remove useful custom vocabulary. If privacy is your reason for changing settings, decide whether you need to hide the suggestion strip, remove selected words, or erase all learned words; each action has a different effect.
Before clearing data, consider whether you need a record of custom names, specialist terms or alternate spellings. The reset may remove them, and restoring them later requires typing them again. Avoid including private text in a bug report or screenshot; provide the smallest example that demonstrates the behavior.
Preventing the same confusion later
- Keep the Gboard language list limited to the languages you actually type while diagnosing a problem.
- When a suggestion looks wrong, note whether it appears in the strip, replaces text automatically, or is a translated output.
- Test the same word in a neutral text field before changing Translate settings.
- Record the language pair, keyboard language, device platform and app version before reporting a bug.
- Use the platform-specific path: Android Gboard settings for Android, Globe-key settings for iOS, Translate’s keyboard menu for the desktop website, and the Keyboard button for Android handwriting mode.
Keep one known-good test phrase handy in each language you use. After an update or settings change, enter that phrase first. This makes it easier to notice whether the keyboard is offering a new spelling, whether automatic correction is active, or whether a translation tool has been reopened accidentally.

When there is no single universal fix
The exact cause cannot be determined from the unexpected word alone. It depends on the device, operating system, keyboard app, active languages, and whether a Translate input tool was intentionally opened. The reliable approach is to identify the visible input surface first, then change only the settings owned by that surface. That prevents a common misdiagnosis: treating a keyboard prediction as if Translate itself had learned or generated it.

Start with the least destructive explanation: a switched language, an enabled suggestion option, a single learned word, or an open Translate tool. Only after those checks should you clear cache, erase learned words or reset Gboard. This sequence preserves useful personalization while still giving you a clear path to escalation when the behavior genuinely appears to be a software bug.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my keyboard suggesting the wrong words in Google Translate?
Usually the active keyboard, most often Gboard, is supplying the candidate words. Check Gboard’s current language and layout, then review Text correction and learned words. Compare the same typing in another app to see whether the behavior is keyboard-wide.
Does changing Google Translate’s language change my keyboard language?
Not necessarily. Gboard’s language list is separate from Android’s display language and Translate’s source language. Switch Gboard with the space bar or language key and manage its languages under Gboard Settings → Languages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do I delete one unwanted Gboard suggestion?
On Android, touch and hold the unwanted candidate in the suggestion strip and drag it to Trash. For a broader reset, use Gboard Settings → Dictionary → Delete learned words, recognizing that useful personalized entries will also be removed.
Why is Google Translate translating while I type instead of showing normal predictions?
You may have opened Gboard’s Translate tool. It translates text while you type in another app and is separate from ordinary next-word prediction. Close that tool and return to the standard keyboard if you want regular suggestions.
How do I fix a virtual keyboard on Google Translate’s website?
On a computer, choose the source language, open the keyboard menu at the lower left of the source text box, and select that language’s virtual keyboard. This does not control a phone’s Gboard prediction strip or the computer’s physical-keyboard input settings.
How do I leave handwriting mode in the Android Translate app?
Choose the source and target languages, open the source box and select Handwrite when available. Tap the Keyboard button to return to normal typing. A grey Handwrite button means handwriting is unavailable for that language.
Are Android and iPhone Gboard settings the same?
No. On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold the Globe key, choose Settings → Keyboard settings, and select the available suggestion types. Android paths such as the Dictionary page and Trash gesture may not exist on iOS.
Should I clear Gboard data to fix Translate suggestions?
Use that only after checking the language, Text correction and learned-word settings, restarting, updating and clearing cache. Clearing storage or data resets Gboard, including preferences and personalization, so it can remove useful custom entries.
The Bottom Line
Find the input surface first. Gboard controls ordinary predictions and learned words; Gboard’s Translate tool handles translation while typing; Translate’s website has a separate virtual keyboard; and the Android app has a separate handwriting mode. Check the matching language and correction settings, then use cache clearing or a full reset only as a last resort.
