Google can continue showing an old-domain URL after your new domain is indexed. That is often normal: Google processes a migration URL by URL and may retain the old address as an alternate name that searchers recognize. It does not, by itself, mean the move failed. The decisive checks are whether every old URL redirects directly to its matching new URL, the new page declares itself canonical, Google can crawl it, and Search Console shows the migration progressing. Medium-sized sites may need a few weeks or more to show the new URLs consistently; larger sites can take longer.
Why the old domain can appear after the new domain is indexed
A site move creates two related addresses for many pages: the old URL that Google already knows and the new URL you want users to reach. Google follows the permanent redirect from the old address, crawls the destination, and builds its own understanding of which URL is canonical. Even after the new page is indexed, Google may occasionally display the old address as an alternate name. Google says this can happen when its systems believe users may recognize or trust the former address more. Those old names generally fade as users become familiar with the new domain.
Search processing is also gradual rather than an all-at-once domain swap. Googlebot revisits old URLs, follows redirects, fetches new pages, evaluates canonical signals, and updates result pages on different schedules. A high-value page may change before a rarely linked archive page. Seeing a mixture of old and new results during that period is expected.

If the new URLs are indexed and old URLs resolve cleanly to their corresponding destinations, the remaining old labels are usually a timing or alternate-name issue. If redirects fail, pages are blocked, or canonical signals conflict, fix those implementation problems before waiting.

How long does Google take to update a domain change?
Google does not provide a universal completion date or crawl interval. Its current site-move guidance says a medium-sized website can take a few weeks or more to start showing new URLs in place of old ones. Larger sites may take longer because they have more URLs to recrawl and more signals to process. Server response time, crawl capacity, internal linking, and the number of changed URLs all affect the schedule.
Canonical changes have a separate lag. Google’s canonical troubleshooting guidance says duplicate URL groups can remain for up to two weeks after corrections. Treat both figures as guidance, not a service-level promise. Submitting a Change of Address request or using “Request indexing” does not force an immediate site-wide replacement.
Use the elapsed time together with technical evidence. A few old results during the first weeks can be normal. A large share of old results that still return errors, redirect to the homepage, or remain the only indexed versions after Google has had ample recrawl opportunity points to a configuration problem.

Normal transition or migration problem?
Check the following conditions before deciding that rankings or indexing have failed:

Step 1: Confirm what actually moved
Record the exact change before changing settings. A move between two domains or subdomains is different from a protocol, hostname, or path change:

- Domain or subdomain move: for example, one registrable domain to another, or one subdomain to another. Google’s Change of Address tool applies here.
- Protocol change: HTTP to HTTPS on the same host. Change of Address is not required.
- Hostname variant: www to non-www, or the reverse. Change of Address is not required.
- Path change: moving content within the same host. Change of Address is not required.
For a domain move, verify the old and new properties in Search Console, including relevant www/non-www and protocol variants. Submit Change of Address for each verified old-domain variant that represents the move, including affected subdomains. Do not use that tool for an HTTPS-only, www-only, or path-only change.
Step 2: Test old URLs across every page type
Do not test only the homepage. Select representative URLs from articles, product or service pages, categories, media, pagination, and any high-traffic landing pages. For a large site, export the complete old URL inventory and crawl it.
- Request an old URL with a browser and an HTTP inspection tool.
- Confirm the response is a server-side permanent redirect, normally HTTP 301 or 308.
- Confirm it points directly to the corresponding new URL, not through several intermediate addresses.
- Open the final destination and verify that the content matches the old page’s purpose.
- Repeat with URL variants such as trailing slashes, uppercase paths, parameters, and common legacy extensions where those were previously accessible.
A redirect from every old page to the new homepage is not a safe substitute for URL mapping. Google warns that irrelevant mass redirects can confuse users and may be treated as soft 404s. Keep redirect chains short and send each old address to the final, most relevant destination. Retain the redirects for at least as long as users, links, and search crawlers may still rely on the old URLs; removing them early can interrupt the transfer of signals.
Step 3: Inspect the new pages for crawlability and canonical signals
Open important new URLs in Search Console’s URL Inspection tool. Check both the live test and Google’s indexed information where available. The page should return a successful response, be accessible to unauthenticated Googlebot, and contain a self-referencing canonical using the new URL.

noindexmeta tag orX-Robots-Tagresponse header on production pages. - A robots.txt rule disallowing the new directory, hostname, or rendering resources.
- Firewall, CDN, rate-limit, or authentication rules returning 403, 429, 5xx, or inconsistent content to Googlebot.
- Canonical tags that still name the old domain, point to a different new page, or use an inaccessible protocol or hostname.
- Internal links, hreflang annotations, structured data, or feeds that continue to publish old URLs.
Removing a block does not instantly index a page. Once the page is crawlable, Google must revisit it and evaluate the updated signals.
Step 4: Resolve canonical conflicts
Canonicalization is Google’s decision about which duplicate or near-duplicate URL represents a page. You can provide signals, but none is an absolute command. Redirects and rel="canonical" annotations are strong signals; sitemap inclusion is weaker but can reinforce the same preference.
For each migrated page, make the signals agree:
- The old URL redirects to the matching new URL.
- The new page’s canonical points to itself.
- The new page is internally linked using the new URL.
- The new URL appears in the current sitemap.
- Old URLs are removed from the new sitemap and from feeds that are meant to describe current content.
In URL Inspection, compare the user-declared canonical with Google’s selected canonical. If Google selected the old URL or another new URL, inspect the redirect target, page similarity, canonical markup, internal links, sitemap entries, and server responses. A differing selection can persist temporarily after a correction, but repeated disagreement indicates that your signals or page content are not sufficiently consistent.
Step 5: Update sitemaps without masking redirect warnings
Publish a sitemap containing the new canonical URLs and submit it in Search Console. Remove obsolete old-domain URLs from that sitemap. During a move, Search Console may warn that URLs in a submitted sitemap redirect; that warning is expected when an old sitemap is still being processed, but it is a reason to replace the sitemap with one containing final destinations.
A sitemap helps discovery and reinforces your preferred URLs; it does not override a redirect, canonical conflict, crawl block, or server error. Keep the sitemap accurate, return a successful response for each listed URL, and check that the listed canonical matches the sitemap address.

Step 6: Monitor indexing, crawling, and server logs
Use Search Console reports to watch trends rather than one isolated result. You want indexed old URLs to decline while indexed new URLs rise, with no corresponding increase in excluded, blocked, or server-error pages. Inspect representative URLs after each deployment and review the Page indexing report for recurring reasons.
Server logs provide evidence that Searchbot is actually reaching both sides of the move. Look for Googlebot requests to old URLs, successful redirect responses, requests to the new destinations, and unexpected HTTP errors. Compare response times and error rates before and after the migration. A slow or overloaded server can limit recrawling even when the redirect rules are logically correct.
Request indexing selectively for important pages after fixing a canonical or crawlability issue. The feature has quotas and is not a guarantee of immediate indexing, so do not submit every URL repeatedly. Prioritize the homepage, major navigation pages, revenue-critical pages, and examples that represent a corrected template.

Redirects point to the wrong destination
Replace blanket homepage redirects and outdated mapping rules with one-to-one redirects. If a page has no true successor, return an appropriate not-found response or redirect to the closest genuinely equivalent page rather than inventing a relationship.

Redirect chains or loops
Update the old server rule so it points directly to the final new URL. Remove intermediate HTTP-to-HTTPS, www, or legacy-path hops where possible. A loop or excessive chain can prevent Googlebot from reaching the content and wastes crawl capacity.

Old canonical tags remain in templates
Check the shared head template, not only individual page records. A single template-level old-domain canonical can affect thousands of URLs. Regenerate cached HTML and verify the response that Google receives.
Robots.txt or noindex rules from staging survive launch
Compare production directives with the intended launch configuration. Ensure that the new host is not disallowed and that the noindex header or meta tag is absent from pages meant to rank. Keep deliberate exclusions for private or duplicate areas, but document them so they are not mistaken for migration failures.
The sitemap still describes the old site
Generate a new sitemap from canonical, indexable URLs. Remove redirected entries and submit the updated file. Also update RSS feeds, APIs, hreflang files, and internal search results that expose old addresses.

Investigate 5xx responses, intermittent timeouts, DNS failures, TLS certificate problems, and firewall challenges. Test from more than one network and correlate failures with log timestamps. Stable successful responses are necessary before waiting for reprocessing.
What not to do while waiting
- Do not delete the old domain or stop serving redirects simply because the new site is live.
- Do not change every canonical repeatedly; each change restarts evaluation and makes diagnosis harder.
- Do not submit thousands of identical indexing requests or treat them as a replacement mechanism.
- Do not redirect unrelated pages to a single destination to inflate apparent coverage.
- Do not judge the migration from one search query, one country, or one device; inspect indexed URLs and technical responses as well.
When the old-domain result is not a concern
An occasional old result is compatible with a successful migration when the new page is indexed, the old URL redirects directly, the new canonical is self-referencing, and Search Console shows no crawl or indexing block. Google explicitly describes occasional old-URL appearances after a domain move as normal alternate-name behavior. Continue monitoring while users and Google become accustomed to the new address.
Escalate the investigation when important new pages are not indexed, old URLs return errors, Google selects an old or unrelated canonical despite consistent new signals, or logs show that Googlebot cannot fetch the destinations. Those symptoms require fixing the implementation rather than simply waiting longer.
