Most often, nothing is wrong with the edit itself: Google Photos has a cloud copy, while your phone’s manufacturer gallery is still showing an older local copy, or the image was never backed up to the Google Account you are checking. On Android, Google’s documented fix for a mismatch between Google Photos and the default gallery is Review out-of-sync changes. First verify the account and backup status, then reconcile the copies instead of repeatedly editing or deleting them.

What “sync” means in this situation

Google Photos and a phone maker’s Gallery app are separate systems. Google Photos can upload an image, store the edit in your Google Photos Account, and display that version on another signed-in device. The default gallery may continue to show a file stored on the phone, however, and that file is not automatically replaced in every case.

Google explicitly warns that “If you edit a photo on photos.google.com or a different device, the changes might not sync to the original device.” Its Android guidance is to open Google Photos on the original device and use Review out-of-sync changes. See Google’s device-photos access guidance.

That is different from whether the edited image is available in Google Photos itself. Google says backed-up photos and edits are available across devices signed in to the same account when backup is enabled. Whether a manufacturer’s gallery reflects the cloud edit is a separate compatibility and reconciliation issue. The Android backup behavior is described in Google’s Android backup guide.

A photo appears in Google Photos on one phone but not on another device The first phone may be showing a local-only image, or the devices may be signed in to different Google Accounts. Check the selected account, backup account, backup status, and whether the item is marked as backed up.
You edited the image in the phone maker’s Gallery app Google Photos may still contain the older cloud copy. Some special image types can instead be overwritten by the gallery. Compare the cloud and local versions before changing either one; use the out-of-sync review where it is offered.
The image came from a messaging, download, screenshot, or other app folder That device folder may not be selected for backup. Check Collections → On this device, then review Photos settings → Backup → Back up device folders.

The distinctions above follow Google’s explanations of backup state, local items, device folders, and gallery reconciliation: check your backup, find items from other apps and devices, and give your device photos access to Google Photos.

Fix the problem on Android, in order

1. Confirm the Google Account

Open Google Photos and tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner. Note the email address shown. On the other device, check the same profile menu and make sure it is using that exact account. A phone can contain several Google Accounts, and the account selected in Photos is not necessarily the account you expected.

If the phone is backing up to a different account, open Photos settings → Backup and inspect Backup account. Change it only if you intentionally want future uploads associated with another account; switching accounts does not merge existing libraries. Google’s backup-status instructions are at Check your backup.

2. Read the backup status instead of trusting the thumbnail

In Google Photos, tap your profile picture and open Photos settings → Backup. Look for the state shown by the app. Google lists states including Backup complete, Backing up, Backup is off, Waiting for connection/Wi‑Fi, and Preparing backup. Each state changes what you should expect from another device:

  • Backup complete: the account has finished its current upload queue. You can investigate account selection, the item’s backed-up marker, or gallery reconciliation.
  • Backing up or Preparing backup: leave Photos open or allow the process to finish on a suitable connection, then check the item again.
  • Backup is off: a visible local image has not necessarily been uploaded. Turn backup on if you want it available through the account.
  • Waiting for connection/Wi‑Fi: resolve the connection requirement shown by the app before expecting the edit on another device.

These labels come from Google’s troubleshooting and backup help; wording can change with an app update. See Troubleshoot photos not backing up and Check your backup.

3. Verify that this particular image is backed up

Google Photos can show images stored on the phone even when they are not backed up to the currently selected account. Therefore, finding a thumbnail in the app is not proof that another device can download it. Open the image and inspect its details or the backup indicator used by your version of Photos. Google’s help identifies backed-up items separately from local items; local visibility alone is not evidence of cloud availability. Read Google’s backup checks and Android backup details.

If the image is local-only, keep the phone connected and let Photos back it up, or use the app’s own backup control for that item if available. Do not delete the local file until you have confirmed the uploaded copy exists in the correct account.

4. Reconcile Google Photos with the default gallery

Use this step when the cloud edit is visible but the Android phone’s built-in gallery still shows the old appearance:

  1. Open Google Photos on the Android phone whose gallery is stale.
  2. Sign in to the account that contains the current photo.
  3. Tap your profile picture.
  4. Select Review out-of-sync changes.
  5. Read each proposed change and accept the option that preserves the version you want in the device gallery.

The exact prompts can vary by phone and Photos version. This documented procedure is specifically for Android’s relationship with a device’s default gallery; it is not a promise that every third-party gallery or iPhone offers the same control. Google describes the feature at Give your device photos access to Google Photos.

5. Check the cloud copy directly

After the review, open photos.google.com in a browser while signed in to the same account, or check Google Photos on the second device. Compare the date, crop, rotation, and other visible changes. If the web copy is correct and the phone gallery is not, the remaining issue is local-gallery reconciliation rather than a missing cloud edit.

Avoid making several new edits while comparing. Multiple versions can make it unclear which file is original, which is edited, and which one the gallery has indexed.

What happens when the phone’s Gallery app made the edit?

An edit made in the device’s default gallery can produce the opposite-looking problem: the phone displays a changed image while Google Photos still has the previous cloud version. Google notes that the default gallery may save an edited file separately, and for some special photo types—such as portraits—it may save over the existing photo. Consequently, there is no single universal “newest file” rule.

Before deleting anything, compare the local gallery image with the copy in Google Photos and decide which is authoritative. If the gallery changed a local file but that folder or item was not backed up, the cloud will not receive the edit. If the edit was uploaded but the gallery has an older local representation, use Review out-of-sync changes on Android. Google’s explanation of these cases is in Give your device photos access to Google Photos.

  • Keep the original until the desired version is visible in the correct account.
  • Do not edit and delete several copies at once; first identify whether each copy is local or backed up.
  • For portraits or other special formats, check whether the gallery overwrote the file rather than creating a second one.

Why a photo can appear on one phone but not another

The first phone is showing a local-only item

Google Photos combines cloud content with media stored on the current device. A thumbnail can therefore appear in the app even though no copy exists in the account. The second device cannot display that local-only file until it is backed up to the account you are using there. Google documents this distinction in Back up photos and videos on Android.

The devices use different accounts

Being signed in to Google on both phones is not enough if Photos is using different accounts. Check the profile email on both devices and the backup account on the phone that created the image. A family member’s account, a work account, or an old account can make a correct backup appear to be missing.

The folder is excluded from backup

Camera images are not the only media people expect to sync. Downloads, screenshots, and files created by messaging or social apps can live in separate Android folders. In Google Photos, open Collections → On this device to locate the file. Then go to Photos settings → Backup → Back up device folders and enable the relevant folder if it should be uploaded. Google’s folder-specific instructions are at Find items from other apps and devices.

If the edit is visible online but the gallery never changes

Confirm that you are testing the Android phone named in the mismatch, not a different device. Then run Review out-of-sync changes again and read the proposed actions rather than dismissing them. If no review option appears, update Google Photos through your normal app channel, confirm that the phone’s default gallery is the app involved, and use the cloud version as the reference while the manufacturer’s indexing catches up. Google’s published procedure is limited to supported Android/default-gallery scenarios, so menu availability can differ by device model, Android release, and gallery implementation.

If the cloud version itself is wrong, the gallery is not the cause. Check which account received the upload, whether backup finished, and whether the gallery edit was ever uploaded. Resolve that ownership question before changing the image again.

Scope: Android versus iPhone and other galleries

The specific Review out-of-sync changes workflow is documented for Android and its default gallery. Google’s general backup guidance still explains account selection, backup state, backed-up items, and access to cloud photos on signed-in devices, but it does not establish that the same reconciliation screen exists on iOS or every third-party Android gallery. On those platforms, use the account and backup checks that Google Photos provides and treat the phone’s native gallery as a separate app with its own local-file behavior.

Prevent future mismatches

  • Keep the intended Google Account selected in Google Photos on every device.
  • Check Photos settings → Backup after changing phones or accounts, and wait for Backup complete before wiping or deleting local media.
  • For screenshots, downloads, and app media, enable only the device folders you actually want backed up.
  • When editing across devices, use Google Photos consistently if you need the edit represented in the Google Photos library; otherwise verify how the phone’s gallery saves that edit.
  • After an edit made on the web or another device, run Review out-of-sync changes on the Android phone whose gallery is stale.
  • Keep an original or an unedited copy until the edited version is visible in the intended account and gallery.

Google’s help pages do not provide a universal repair for every gallery application, and their menu labels may change. The reliable sequence is to establish the account, read the backup state, verify that the item is actually backed up, then reconcile the Android default gallery when Google Photos offers that review.
