If Google Messages hid a text from someone you trust, the message was usually classified as suspected spam, placed in Spam & blocked, or caught by an international-number filter. The conversation can normally be restored from that folder; if it is not there, work through the phone, app, carrier, and messaging-service checks below.
Start with the location of the missing message
Where the conversation is found determines the correct fix. Do not begin by changing carrier settings if the message is already in Google Messages, and do not keep looking in Spam & blocked when the sender’s conversation is absent entirely.
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The conversation is in Spam & blocked | Spam protection, a previous spam report, an explicit block, or the international-message filter moved it. | Open the conversation and use Unblock, Report not spam, or Move to inbox, depending on the option shown. |
| The conversation is in the normal inbox but new texts are missing | The sender may be using a different number, the phone may have a connectivity or storage problem, or the message may be sent over a service your device is not currently using. | Check the sender’s exact number, connection, default SMS app, carrier support, and RCS or iMessage state. |
| The conversation is nowhere in Messages | The sender may still be blocked, the number may be wrong, delivery may have failed at the carrier, or the message may not have been sent. | Follow the troubleshooting sequence in this article instead of repeatedly reporting unrelated messages. |
Also note whether the problem affects one sender or everyone. One missing conversation points toward a block, wrong number, spam decision, short code, or sender-side issue. A failure affecting every sender points more strongly to the default app, SIM or carrier service, signal, storage, or a messaging-registration problem.

Spam protection can create a false positive
Google Messages uses spam protection to identify suspected unwanted messages. Google says the protection can prevent a suspected spam message from being delivered and hide it in the spam folder. The classification uses machine-learning models that operate on the device and checks links in messages against signals associated with malicious URLs. A genuine message can therefore be filtered even when the sender is known to you.

Spam protection is enabled automatically where the feature is available. To review its setting, open Google Messages > profile photo or icon > Messages settings > Protection & safety > Spam protection. Turning the setting off may allow more messages through, but it also removes a layer that is intended to identify harmful or unwanted texts. If one trusted conversation was misclassified, correcting that conversation is usually preferable to disabling protection for every sender.
A legitimate text that contains a link, an unfamiliar number, or wording that resembles bulk messaging can look different from your usual conversations. That does not prove the message is malicious, and it does not mean the sender deliberately blocked you. It means Messages made a classification decision before placing the text in the normal inbox.
A block and a spam report are linked
Blocking a sender and reporting a conversation as spam are separate choices, but reporting a conversation as spam also blocks the sender and moves the thread to Spam & blocked. A mistaken tap on a report option can therefore make a familiar contact appear to have disappeared. Marking the conversation as not spam removes the spam flag and provides feedback that can help Google’s classification system handle later messages.
Deleting a conversation is not the same as unblocking it. Deleting removes the visible thread, while a block can continue to prevent new messages. If you accidentally reported a thread, recover it from Spam & blocked first, then use the corrective action shown by the app.
International-number filtering can move messages without a conventional spam report
On supported devices, Hide international messages moves messages from international numbers that are not saved in your contacts to Spam & blocked. This is a device-side filter, so a legitimate travel, banking, delivery, or family message can be affected when the number is foreign or not stored. The recovery action for this case is Move to inbox; future messages in that conversation are then delivered to the inbox.
This filter is different from carrier-level international blocking. The conversation can be present on the phone even though the filter kept it out of the Home screen. If the sender changes to another foreign number, Messages may create a separate thread and apply the filter again.
Unblock a legitimate text on Android
Use these steps in the current Google Messages app on the Android phone that received the message:

If the app uses slightly different labels, look for the same path: your profile or account menu, a menu labeled More options, and the folder named Spam & blocked. The exact placement can vary by app version, but the recovery action remains tied to the conversation in that folder.
When the app offers “Report not spam”
If the thread opens with a suspected-spam warning, choose Report not spam. This removes the spam classification and sends feedback to Google’s system. The wording can vary by app version, but the intent is the same: tell Messages that this conversation is wanted rather than unwanted.
If the message was moved by the international-number filter, look for Move to inbox instead. That action is different from a spam report: it restores the conversation and tells the device to deliver future messages in that thread to the inbox.
Recommended Free Tools
Use only the action that matches what you see. Unblock is appropriate when the sender is blocked or the thread was reported. Report not spam is appropriate when Messages displays a spam classification. Move to inbox is the documented recovery for an international-message filter. Choosing the wrong option can leave the underlying setting unchanged.
Unblock the conversation in Google Messages for web
You can recover a blocked conversation from Google Messages for web when your browser is paired with the phone:
- Open Google Messages for web and locate the conversation list.
- Open More options.
- Choose Spam & blocked.
- Select the contact or conversation.
- Choose Unblock, then select Done.
The phone remains the source of the messaging account and connection. If the thread does not appear on the web interface, repeat the search in the Android app and make sure the browser session is still paired. A browser view cannot correct a carrier outage, missing SIM service, or an unregistered RCS account; it only exposes the conversations available through the paired phone.
What to check when the conversation is not in Spam & blocked
Confirm the exact number and country code
Ask the sender to read back the number they used, including the country code. A contact can have several entries, an old number, or a business line that does not accept replies. Compare that number with the conversation header in Messages rather than relying only on the contact’s name. A country-code mismatch can make an otherwise familiar sender look like a different or international number.

Check the blocked list independently
A sender can remain blocked even when a particular conversation is not visible in the spam folder. Review the blocked contacts from Google Messages and remove the sender’s number if it appears there. Then request a new test message. Do not assume that deleting the contact removes a block; blocking is a messaging setting, not a contact-book entry.
Install the latest Google Messages update
Open the phone’s app store, find Google Messages, and install any available update. Google’s troubleshooting guidance includes updating the app because an outdated build can have problems with current SMS, MMS, or RCS behavior. Restart Messages after updating and test with a short, ordinary text before testing a picture or link.
Make Google Messages the default texting app
Android can route incoming texts to only one default SMS application. In system app settings, verify that Google Messages is selected as the default texting app. If another messaging app was recently installed or restored, it may still be receiving the conversation. After changing the default, reopen Messages and allow time for the inbox to synchronize.

Verify the service and the connection
Ask whether the sender is using SMS, MMS, or RCS. Your carrier and plan must support the transport being used. Check the following conditions:
- Your mobile plan or account has available credit and has not been suspended.
- The phone has a usable cellular signal or an approved Wi-Fi connection for the service involved.
- Airplane mode is off.
- The device has free storage space for incoming messages and attachments.
- Your carrier supports the SMS, MMS, or RCS service required by the conversation.
A basic SMS test is useful because it separates a general receiving problem from an RCS- or MMS-specific problem. If texts from every sender fail, the carrier, SIM, signal, or phone configuration is more likely than a single spam classification. If only one sender fails, concentrate on that number, its block status, and the sender’s transport.
Try tests in a controlled order: first receive a plain SMS from a known contact, then try an MMS or picture, and only then test RCS if that is how the conversation normally works. This avoids treating an RCS registration problem as proof that ordinary texting is broken. Record whether the sender sees a delivery error, because that helps distinguish a sender-side failure from a receiving-phone problem.
Resolve an old iPhone registration
If you recently moved your number from an iPhone to Android, deactivate iMessage for that number. Apple’s service can continue routing messages as iMessage instead of delivering them as SMS until the number is deregistered. Once iMessage is deactivated, have the sender start a new conversation and send a plain text.
Reset RCS when changing messaging apps
When you switch messaging applications, Google’s troubleshooting instructions may require turning off RCS chats before Messages can register correctly. Disable RCS in the previous app or through the available Google Messages chat settings, then reopen Google Messages and allow it to register again. Use SMS for the first test so that an RCS registration problem does not obscure the result.

Special case: short codes
Short codes are abbreviated numbers used by services such as alerts, verification systems, and account notifications. They follow different delivery rules from ordinary phone numbers. Google lists several reasons a short-code message may fail:
- The short code may be outbound-only and unable to receive replies.
- Premium SMS permission may be blocked on the phone.
- The service may use an alphanumeric short code that Google Messages cannot send to.
For a missing one-time code, first verify that the service has the correct phone number and that your carrier permits the relevant short-code category. Do not repeatedly request codes while the account is rate-limiting attempts; wait for the service’s stated retry interval and test ordinary SMS separately. If ordinary texts arrive but one service’s code does not, contact that service and ask whether its short code is outbound-only or restricted on your carrier.
Special case: international messages
If the sender is abroad or uses a foreign number, check whether Hide international messages is enabled on your device. The filter applies to international numbers that are not in your contacts, so saving the sender does not recover an already moved conversation by itself. Open Spam & blocked, select the thread, and tap Move to inbox. Future texts in that conversation should be delivered to the inbox.
If the sender uses multiple numbers, move each legitimate thread individually. A message from a different foreign number can be treated as a new conversation and filtered again. If no conversation appears at all, verify the country code and then check carrier international-SMS support rather than assuming the device filter caused the failure.
Reporting, blocking, and your privacy
Reporting is optional. You can block a sender without submitting a spam report when you simply do not want further contact. If you do report a conversation, Google says the report can include the sender’s phone number and up to the 10 most recent incoming messages. A spam-reporting conversation may also send the sender’s number and the most recent text to your mobile carrier.
That data-handling distinction matters when the message is legitimate. Use Unblock or Report not spam for a false positive. Use Block without reporting when you want to stop a sender but do not want to submit the conversation for spam analysis. Avoid reporting a trusted message merely to make it disappear; reporting changes both the sender’s block status and the data shared for classification.
The “up to 10” limit describes the number of recent incoming messages that may accompany a report. It is not a measurement of how frequently Google Messages makes mistakes, and it should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every report contains exactly 10 messages.
A practical decision path
- Search Spam & blocked. If the conversation is there, select the action that matches the cause: Unblock for a blocked or reported sender, Report not spam for a suspected-spam warning, or Move to inbox for an international-message filter.
- Check the sender’s exact number. Confirm the country code and whether the sender used another line or short code.
- Check blocks and defaults. Remove an unintended block, update Google Messages, and make it the default texting app.
- Test the transport. Try an ordinary SMS, then investigate MMS or RCS only if SMS works.
- Check the phone and carrier. Verify plan credit, signal, airplane mode, storage, and carrier support.
- Account for recent platform changes. Deactivate iMessage after an iPhone switch and reset RCS after changing messaging apps when Google’s instructions call for it.
- Escalate with evidence. If texts from all senders fail after these checks, contact the carrier with the time, sender number, transport, and any error shown. If only one service fails, contact that service about its short code or outbound-delivery rules.
When contacting support, explain what you already tested: whether the thread appeared in Spam & blocked, which recovery action you used, whether a plain SMS from another person arrived, and whether the issue affects one number or all numbers. That information prevents support from repeating the same spam-folder check and directs the case toward the carrier, device, or sender that can actually correct it.

What success looks like
After a normal unblock, the thread returns to the Home screen and the spam report is removed. After Report not spam, the suspected-spam flag is removed. After Move to inbox, the international conversation is restored and later messages in that thread are delivered to the inbox. Send one new test message and verify that it arrives before assuming the problem is resolved for every sender or every message type.
There is no published Google figure establishing how often legitimate texts are misclassified. The documented limit of up to 10 recent incoming messages concerns what a spam report may contain; it is not a statistic about false-positive frequency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Google Messages block a text from someone I know?
Spam protection can classify a legitimate message as suspected spam, an earlier spam report can block the sender, or the Hide international messages filter can move an unfamiliar foreign number to Spam & blocked. Open that folder first and choose the recovery action shown for the conversation.
