If Google Maps Timeline is empty, missing, or stuck on an old date, first determine which of four situations applies: Timeline is turned off, Maps is using a different account or device, a new phone has not imported the old device’s backup, or Google Maps cannot record location. A missing visit can also be intentional: Google automatically deletes visits to places it designates particularly personal, and auto-delete can remove older history.
Use the checks below in order. Do not clear app data, delete Maps, or factory-reset the phone until you have checked for a Timeline backup or exported the data that is still on the device.
What a missing or stale Timeline usually means
Google Maps Timeline is an opt-in record of routes and visits associated with eligible devices where you are signed in. It is not simply a display of every location your phone has detected. Google states that “Timeline is off by default for your Google Account and can only be turned on if you opt in.” (Google Maps Help)

A history that appears on an old phone is not proof that the same copy is already present on a replacement phone. The replacement may need to import an encrypted backup. Conversely, seeing your account on a phone does not prove that Timeline is enabled for that device.

The official Android and iPhone/iPad instructions were checked on October 13, 2026. Menus can differ by operating-system version, account rollout, device manufacturer, and region.
1. Confirm the account, device, and Maps version
Use the Google Account that recorded the history
In Google Maps, open your profile picture or initial and verify the signed-in Google Account. If you use several accounts, switch to the one that was active when the trips were recorded. Check the account on the old phone as well, if you still have it. A different account can make a perfectly healthy Timeline look empty.
Open Timeline on the phone you are troubleshooting, not only on a computer or another handset. Google describes Timeline as data held on eligible signed-in devices, so one device’s history cannot be used to prove that another device has the same local copy.

Update Google Maps before looking for missing controls
Google lists Google Maps version 11.106 or later for Android phones and tablets. Timeline is not available on Android Go devices. For iPhone and iPad, Google lists version 6.93 or later. Install the newest Maps update offered by your device’s app store, then reopen Maps and check Timeline again. The requirements and platform-specific procedures are in Google’s Android Timeline instructions and its iPhone and iPad instructions.
If the phone is running Android Go, do not assume that reinstalling Maps will add Timeline; Google identifies that edition as unsupported. For a managed work or school account, an administrator’s policies can also change which controls appear.

2. Turn on both device Location and Timeline
Allowing the phone to use location does not automatically turn on Timeline. Both controls matter, and Google’s labels can change as settings are rolled out.
Android phones and tablets
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Your Timeline.
- Tap More, then Location & privacy settings.
- Check that Location is on and Timeline is on. Enable either setting that is off.
These are Google’s documented Android labels. If your build uses slightly different wording, remain in the Timeline location and privacy area and look for the equivalent Location and Timeline switches. Also inspect the phone’s system permission for Google Maps and allow location access that is appropriate for recording visits. A system-level location block can prevent recording even when the Timeline switch itself is on.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Your Timeline.
- Review the Timeline control and the linked location settings.
- In iOS Settings, confirm that Google Maps has the location access required by your chosen Timeline configuration.
Google provides separate iOS guidance because the available permission labels and screens depend on the iOS release. Follow the labels shown on your device rather than a screenshot from an older version. The full platform instructions are on Google Maps Help for iPhone and iPad.
3. Restore Timeline after moving to a new phone
If your old phone contains the history but the new one does not, look for a Timeline backup before changing anything on either device. Google describes the backup as an encrypted copy stored on its servers that can be imported to another device.
Import an available backup
- Open Google Maps on the new phone and open Your Timeline.
- Tap the cloud or backup control to open Your backups.
- Select the backup belonging to the old phone.
- Choose More, then Import.
- Confirm the import and leave the device connected while Maps processes it.
Google warns that changes may take a few days to appear in a backup. Do not interpret an immediately incomplete view as proof that the import failed; check again after the processing period described in the app.

When an encrypted backup is locked
If Maps says the encrypted data is locked, Google directs you to the original device that encrypted the backup. On that device, open the Backup screen and enter the password used to protect the backup, if the phone is still available. This is why an old phone should not be wiped or traded in until the new phone has imported the history you need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the original device is unavailable and the backup cannot be unlocked, Google’s documented fallback is to turn off Timeline backups and delete the existing backups. That permanently deletes those server backups; it is not a harmless reset and can remove the only recoverable copy. Consider it only after you have confirmed that the old device and its password cannot be used.
What a backup cannot guarantee
Import depends on a backup existing, being associated with the expected account and source device, and being accessible. Google does not promise that every historical record can be restored when the source device and encrypted backup are gone. An empty backup list therefore calls for preservation and account checks, not repeated destructive resets.
4. Fix a Timeline that opens but is not updating
When the Timeline screen loads but recent visits never appear, work through these checks:
- Verify that you are in the Google Account that was recording the trips.
- Confirm that both the phone’s Location setting and Google Maps Timeline are on.
- Check Google Maps’ current location permission in the operating system.
- Install any available Maps update, especially if the Timeline controls are missing or behave differently from Google’s current instructions.
- Reopen Timeline after changing a setting and allow time for new activity to be processed.
Do not conflate Timeline with Location Sharing. Location Sharing shows your position to selected people; it is not the private visit-and-route history described here. Likewise, Web & App Activity and Search services settings are separate Google controls. Activity can remain in one service even when Timeline is off or deleted, and changing one does not recreate data already removed from another.

5. Check whether the missing dates were deleted by design
Particularly personal places
Google says that visits to places it designates particularly personal are automatically deleted for all Timeline users. A gap involving one of those places is therefore not proof that location recording failed, and it cannot be repaired by importing the same Timeline again.
Auto-delete intervals
Google’s Android Timeline instructions describe automatic deletion choices of 3, 18, or 36 months. If a date is older than the selected rolling interval, it may have been removed normally. Check the current Timeline retention setting before searching for a hardware or permission fault.
Changing account and Search service screens
Google says Search service settings are rolling out gradually, so the labels shown in your account may differ. When the Timeline privacy screen does not match an online guide, look for the applicable controls under Web & App Activity as well as the Timeline screen. The distinction is important: these settings govern related but separate data stores, and a change in one does not automatically restore deleted Timeline entries. Google’s privacy explanation is available in How Google keeps your Timeline data private, with account-level details in Manage your Timeline data.

Google warns that data can be held on an individual device. Editing or deleting Timeline data on one device does not necessarily change the copy on another, but destructive device actions can remove the local copy you still need.

Export from Android
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Go to Location.
- Choose Location services.
- Open Timeline.
- Choose Export Timeline data and save the exported file where you can access it.
Export from iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Maps and go to Settings.
- Choose Personal content.
- Tap Export Timeline data.
- Use the iOS share sheet to save the resulting
location-history.jsonfile to a secure location.
These are the in-app export procedures documented by Google. They are not evidence that a general Google Takeout download can be imported back into the device Timeline; do not treat the two processes as interchangeable.

Actions to postpone
- On Android, do not clear Google Play services data or factory-reset the phone while the local Timeline is still needed; Google warns these actions delete Timeline data from that device.
- On iPhone or iPad, do not delete Google Maps or factory-reset the device as a routine fix; Google warns that these actions delete the device’s Timeline data.
- Do not erase the old phone until the new phone shows the imported history or you have made an export.
Check Your backups and export first. A reinstall may refresh an app, but it cannot recreate a local history that has already been erased.
Use this decision guide for the common cases
| Situation | Safest next action | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Timeline is absent on Android | Update Maps, confirm the phone is not Android Go, then check the signed-in account. | If the option remains absent, the device or account may not meet Google’s availability conditions. |
| Timeline is absent on iPhone/iPad | Update to Maps 6.93 or later and inspect the account and current iOS location permissions. | Different labels may reflect an iOS or account-settings rollout rather than lost history. |
| Old phone still works; new phone is empty | Keep the old phone intact, verify its account, and import the listed backup on the new phone. | The old device and its backup provide the best recovery path. |
| Backup is listed but locked | Use the original encrypting device and its Backup screen to enter the password. | Unlocking makes the encrypted copy eligible for import. |
| No backup is listed and old phone is gone | Do not reset more devices; export any remaining local data and document the account, versions, and error. | Recovery depends on whether another device copy or accessible backup exists. |
| Only old dates are missing | Review 3-, 18-, or 36-month auto-delete and Google’s personal-place deletion behavior. | The gap may reflect retention or privacy deletion rather than a recording outage. |
When the documented fixes do not work
Before seeking account or device support, record the details that distinguish the possible causes:
- Phone model and operating-system version.
- Google Maps version.
- The Google Account in use and whether another account was previously used.
- Whether Timeline is missing entirely, opens empty, or stopped on a particular date.
- Whether the old phone is available and still shows the history.
- Whether Your backups lists a source device.
- Whether the backup is locked and the exact error wording.
- Whether Location and Timeline are both enabled.
Those facts are more useful than repeatedly clearing storage or reinstalling Maps. Google’s help pages provide platform-specific steps, but they cannot determine an individual cause without the phone, account, app version, and backup state.

Start with account and app version, then enable both Location and Timeline. If the problem began with a phone change, protect the old device and import its encrypted backup before attempting any reset. Finally, check auto-delete and Google’s automatic removal of particularly personal places. These steps separate a disabled setting, a device-transfer issue, a permission problem, and intentional data deletion without risking the only copy of your history.
